California Senate Steps into Social Media

Recently Facebook is found to be secretly hiring a PR firm to spread rumors about Google.  Now California Senator, Ellen Corbett has introduced Social Networking Privacy Act (SB 242).  This Bill would require social network providers to establish privacy settings when they register and to make the default setting to private revealing only the name and city location of the user.

Facebook’s response to this type of talk is that the sharing of social information is the new “social norm.”  This argument might actually be supported by the recent relative lack of of response to the news that people were being tracked by their smartphones.
