We need oil, …..we need alternative fuel options,….. we need to clean up the gulf,….. we need to agree to dissagree. Not any one person has the answers. I do not want to pay higher prices for gas or anything else for that matter. I live in Navarre FL about 18 miles outside of Destin. I would rethink your trip. I would love you to come and enjoy our beaches but sadly the oil has started to wash ashore in Fort Walton. Its only time now. By Aug our beaches will be black with oil … Sorry, I know this sucks .

With a name like "Fred Baker" how could you not be a moron. The people of the gulf coast have been fighting for years to keep the drilling away from the coast. It's not them who wanted the oil, it was the rest of the country who wanted it and didn't care how they got it. Now the people of the gulf get to suffer another disaster and, of course, they will have to clean it up and take the consequences of YOUR greed.

Are you also willing to pay $20 for a gallon of milk? How about $30 for a hamburger or an additional $10-$15 a pound for meat. What about $10 for a head of lettuce? Just exactly how do you think these goods get to your local store? Magic? No. Trucks. What do they need to move? Diesel. What do you think lubricates the engines, transmissions and other moving parts? Oil.

What do you think that all the tractors and harvesters need to run that enable you to enjoy a $1 loaf of bread? Yea, diesel. Are you willing to pay $10 for your bread, hamburger buns and hot dog buns too?

And NO, bio-diesel is NOT economically feasible at this time. It may be eventually but not within the next decade at minimum.

And before you start spewing about hybrid cars and the like, where do you think 90% of the plastics and resins come from to manufacture these "green" vehicles? Yea, crude oil. What to you think the mining and smelting equipment burn to dig up the lithium, platinum, titanium and aluminum that is required to manufacture the batteries in electric cars? Yep, diesel.

How about the clothes you are wearing? Are you willing to also double or triple their price? Unless they are 100% cotton, its a high probability that they are made from polymers like nylon, rayon, dacron or similar synthetics. All derived from crude oil as are most thermoplastics and synthetic polymers.

You better think good and hard about your $10 gas theory and how REALLY willing you are to accept it. Perhaps knowing where that potato chip comes from and how it was grown, harvested and transported to get to you might help you understand just exactly how disastrous your $10 gas will really be to the entire economy and the national food supply.

I grew up in Ft Walton so I know very well what this disaster means to the local economy. It will kill many businesses that wouldn't otherwise have folded. There is nothing you can do about that at this point. The world/national economy has already taken a toll on tourism and that is the lifeblood of the area. There is only so much they can sap from the economic benefit of Eglin and Hurlburt fields. The rest of the economy depends on tourism and when tourism is hurt, the local economy is also hurt.

Unfortunately, this disaster only accelerates the demise of an already unstable economy in the area. That said, you also need to look at the whole country and the economic disaster on a national scale that extreme fuel prices would mean. You think tourists are going to pay double the hotel rates, $10 a gallon gas, $10 hamburgers, double the rate for half day fishing charters, and still make the same as they do at their jobs? Not. What do you think will happen to plane tickets when the airlines start having to pay 3x to 5x what they currently do for aircraft fuel (kerosene for the larger jets and AV gas for the commuter turbo props). Yea, prices go up. Every dollar a tourist has to pay on a plane ticket is a dollar LESS they spend in Ft Walton. The higher the prices, the less likely they will come at all.

The higher fuel costs would also be an economic disaster in northern states (where I currently live) where fuel oil and natural gas are still a major portion of our heating bills. This would also decimate the manufacturing areas of the country as well since they rely on reasonable fuel prices to move raw materials as well as for use in smelters, milling operations and the like. You think everything is made in China now, just wait until your acceptable $10 gas actually happens.

So many people (Obama included) simply don't understand how fragile the economy really is. It literally is a house of cards. One little mistake and it all comes down. One of those mistakes would be condoning high fuel prices. Fuel prices are one of the cards on the bottom row, alter it much and you better be prepared for the 1930's and the dust bowl days of the mid west. It will mean a national disaster of epic proportions.

So, what about the smell on Ft. Walton Beach?

I care about Louisiana and I believe everybody else cares as deeply as I do. This has been a very devastating event to the coast there. More so than any hurricane. Louisiana, with it's vast tributaries and marsh is likely one of the most important streatches of coast in the entire gulf. Louisiana gives widespread life to the gulf. We are all in this together. Death does not recognize state lines. The recent or more attention is a good thing. We are all fed up and it is starting to show more. It is past time that more could be done on CONTAINING the oil spread. The work at the well head in 5000 ft. of water is a daunting technical challenge. Top side containment of the oil is nothing new.

I will have to say you are correct. There should not be any political angle on the solution to stopping this oil from further devastation. I may have become cynical given all the political and big business corruption which has come to light in the past few years. The seemingly political spin on everything. The point I am trying to make is that it is apparent that the number of vessels that are currently working is not enough. President Obama, ORDER Bp, the Coast Guard or who ever to double or triple the current force and really throw everything we possibly can at this now. We will worry about the cost later. Yep, I said that. WE will worry about the cost later. The gulf is priceless. No amount of money or time will fully restore or make it like it never happened. This is OUR ocean and as a gulf coast resident I look at this as like a war. We are fighting something that could destroy us.

Of course this is a horrible situation and I wish there was an easy solution to it. I'm just so tired of hearing people complain that "someone should have stopped this" or "why aren't they fixing this?" The time people spend complaining about all this may be better spent dishing out "hay" (if it was even that easy.) My responsibility in the mlitary is to protect and defend you… but at the same time, maybe you and others should start thinking about what you can be doing for yourself. (Guess JFK did have it right.)

To minimize what we do in the military to "drinking coffee and swapping tall tales" and that our time would be better spent shoveling hay for you (when ANYONE can do that)…that just really saddens me. On that note… I'll still stand by what I fight for and sacrifice the time away from my family each time I get deployed to defend the very right that gives you the ability to say what you want… even if it degrades who and what I work for.

And you should learn the use of "quotation marks" instead of parentheses. Simple typos and a couple misspelled words, I can forgive… it happens. Multiple misspelled words… not so much. Apparently, I'm not the only one that noticed it.
