Ernie Els wins the 100th South African Open championship by 1 stroke

Ernie Els fought off fellow South African Retief Goosen in an old fashion golf duel over 34 holes of golf.  Goosen finished strong with four birdies in the last five holes but Els held up under the pressure to win by one stroke.  Els posted a record 25 under par.  However, the record will not be official.  Due to the excessive rains on Thursday the par-three fourth was declared unplayable and each of the players received an automatic par on that hole for the Saturday and Sunday rounds.  With players playing two rounds of golf on Sunday the crowds really got their money’s worth.

With this win Els re-established his standing as one of South Africa’s best golfers.  He first place winnings were $208,508.00 USD
