Microsoft Gains Momentum From Facebook – Skype Announcement

These days, it’s hard for anyone at Microsoft to be excited about anything. However, while I’ve been criticizing Microsoft over the past couple of years over the terrible product launches, they’ve been making some pretty impressive business partnerships that might really start to pay off.

We know that on Wednesday, Facebook has “a really awesome” announcement to make. And from leaked information, Facebook is going to announce a partnership with Skype to bring video chat to the Facebook chat platform.

Currently, Skype has only 150 million users compared to Facebook’s 750 million users. So the Facebook / Skype marriage will mean a significant increase in Skype usage.

And Microsoft is a Facebook shareholder and has a pending acquisition of Skype.

So while we criticize Microsoft for their product launches, they may end up getting the last laugh with Facebook and Skype.

Facebook Hires Hacker (aka Geohot)

George Hotz (aka Geohot), the infamous hacker that was at the forefront of the first jailbreak of the iPhone, and who also published the Sony Playstation’s root keys which landed him in a serious lawsuit, has been hired at Facebook.

Facebook is the perfect place for hackers to work because of Facebook’s traditional hackathons – of which I’m sure Hotz does quite well against other Facebook hackers.

The hiring of hacker George Hotz shows that tech giants like Facebook can find great talent other than the ivory towers of places like Stanford and MIT.

Consumer Report: Don’t Buy IPhone 4

After lab reports performed by technicians at Consumer Reports, they have concluded that the antenna problem is a legitimate one. Therefore they recommend that consumers do not purchase the Iphone 4.

There are two steel bands that run around the phone’s edge that function as an antenna. Consumers soon discover that you will experience a dramatic loss in signal strength if you connect the steel bands with your hand when you hold it a certain way.

This loss of signal strength is enough to drop a call and that is a huge no-no. Apple’s relunctancy to truely address the issue as well as other problems gives the phone a negative report.

This isn’t some stoner computer hacker running tests in his basement; this is Consumer Report’s and when they talk, most people listen.

Steve Jobs’ arrogance has not helped the situation, so look for lawsuits and outcries for recalls to surface soon. The public has supported you for a long time, Mr. Jobs, please do right by the people.

Sailor Abby Sunderland Alive and Well

16 year old Californian sailor Abby Sunderland who was on a quest to sail around the world went missing about 24 hours ago, but she is alive and well thanks to a chartered airbus search plane. She had been feared lost out to see when a distress signal came through after a mast on her ship broke. The broken mast disabled her GPS communication device for her ship and everyone feared the worst as she was stranded in the middle of the Indian Ocean thousands of miles away from land or civilization. It will take rescue boats about 24-40 hours to reach her, so she should be in good hands some time on Saturday. Strangely enough her older brother 17 year-old Zac didn’t seem too distraught. He said “She’s got all the skills to take care of what she has to take care of, she also has all of the equipment.” The two questions that remain are; Will Abby Sunderland return to the open sea to finish her quest to sail around the world? and Should there be some type of regulation against such young children attempting such incredible feats?

THIS WEEK’S SIGN OF THE APOCALYPSE: Video has surfaced of two-year-old Ardi Rizal of Indonesia smoking a cigarette…..like a pro I might add. According to his parents, he is completely addicted and he throws tantrums if he is ever denied a smoke break. The Indonesian government has apparently offered the family a car if they can get this 2-year-old to kick his habit. By the looks of these photos, he is clearly overweight so it is safe to say that smoking 40 squares a day can only add to his unhealthy lifestyle. His parents have admitted that they gave him his first cigarette at the tender age of 18 months. This is complete child abuse as his parents have just set this kid up to die way before his time. Many have called this “news of the weird” and even cute, but this is just down right sad. This just goes to show us that there are idiotic parents everywhere.

Silvia Mena Photos Leaked; Haynesworth Being Sued for 10 Million

Today the New York Post has reported that Washington Redskins defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth is being sued by an exotic dancer from Brooklyn, NY named Silvia Mena. Mena and Haynesworth were introduced by luxury car dealer Roland Reznik at last year’s Super Bowl. Reznik told the post that he thought the 40 million dollar man was a “really nice, educated and friendly guy”. Dubbed “Fat Albert” by many disgruntled Redskin fans, Haynesworth will have one heck of a time digging himself out of this one. He is at the moment a no-show for the ‘Skins voluntary organized team activities (OTA’s), so not too many people in the Washington organization are pleased with him. However, he has assured everybody that he will attend the teams mandatory mini-camp next month. I hope Albert can pull it all together, because that was one pretty expensive lap dance!

Amare Stoudemire Gives Suns a Ray of Hope

Amare Stoudemire through a cloud of criticism this week came through with a beast of a game pouring in a career playoff best 42 points in game 3 of the western conference finals. In the days leading up to the game the talking heads took shots at Stoudemire most importantly questioning his effort and desire to play the game. To go along with his 42 points he shot an impressive 14-18 from the charity stripe and had a game high 11 boards. As far as I’m concerned this now has become a series, but the Kobe and the Lakers will close this one out in 6 games. For now however, the grim reaper has left the building.

Former MLB Pitcher José Lima, Dead at 37

Today the Los Angeles Dodgers have reported that Jose Lima died this morning of an apparent heart attack in his Los Angeles home. The Dominican right hander was a 13 year league veteran who enjoyed his best season in 1999 when he won 21 games as well as being selected to the all-star team. He was best known for his colorful on field persona he dubbed “Lima Time”. A spokesman from Lima’s winter league team Aguilas Cibaenas said that “Lima was an exceptional man and this is a great loss for Dominican baseball and our country.”

2010 French Open Underway Today at Roland Garros

Play at the French Open has begun today and it should be an exciting two weeks. On the women’s side Serena and Venus Williams received the #1 and #2 seeds respectively for the fist time ever at the French Open. Serena actually has the tougher draw with the likes of Maria Sharapova and Justine Henin on her side. Henin, fresh off retirement is looking to recapture the dominance that she once had after winning three straight Open titles from 2005-2007.

Even with her success at the French Open, I still can’t call a 23rd seed that has to defeat Jelena Jankovic, Sharapova, and Serena Williams to win the title a favorite. Look for Serena to win the second French Open title of her career at Roland Garros.
On the men’s side I would never ever bet against Rafael Nadal on clay, where he has won 28 of his 39 titles. You can’t count out Roger Federer who is looking to show the tennis world that he hasn’t lost a step. Look for these two to make the finals again, but don’t get your hopes up for another one of those epic classics.

As far as the Americans are concerned, Andy Roodick will make another early exit as the 2010 French Open will be his first match on clay this season. Keep an eye on young upstarts John Isner and Jesse Witten to make some noise.

Floyd, we rooted for you in the absence of our TRUE U.S. cycling hero, Lance Armstrong. You were this diminutive underdog who seemed as pure as the amish countryside from which you were raised, but you lied. We Americans have been known to forgive liars in the past, but when you toy with our emotions, we will turn our backs on you. You should have just come clean when the probes began back in 2007, but no. You begged for our support and assured us that this was just a witch hunt by the International Cycling Union and surprise, surprise, we stood behind you!
Well Floyd, you made us all look like fools. So please stop trying to implicate others in your blood doping, performance enhancing whirlwind. The difference between you and Lance is simply the fact that he never tested positive for ANYTHING EVER! Go away quietly, your time is up. Go write a sucky book like your blood (doping) brother Jose Canseco`.

Throwback Finals On the Horizon

This weekend both the Lakers and the Celtics look to take one step closer to meeting in the finals for the second time in three years and the 12th time overall. They both take 2-0 series leads into Saturday and Sunday’s game 3 contests. If the Suns and the Magic can’t find a way to claw back into their respective series’ with game 3 victories, you can all but slam the door on their seasons. I myself think that because of both L.A. and Boston’s veteran leadership and experience we can all start to look toward the NBA finals for potential story lines. Is there a glimmer of hope after Dwight Howard turned it around in game 2 after stinkin’ up the joint with only 3 field goals in the opening contest? Sure there is. I also think that you can never count out a guy like Steve Nash who is as tough and as gritty as they come. However, the “three game stranglehold” is lurking for both the Magic and Suns.
My top story line for the finals you ask? How about Redemption for Kobe Bryant after Paul Pierce showed the whole world that HE was the best player in the universe during that 2008 playoff run where the Celts finished of their west coast nemisis 4-2 in the finals. Commisioner Stern, I know you are praying for the match up of these two great television mark….errr franchises. You can thank me later.
