Like any other device, an iPhone certainly can get hacked, especially if someone is out to get you. However, it’s not a common thing. Also, whether you get hacked or not, it does not really depend on which type of device you have.

Moreover, an iPhone has a reputation for being one of the most secure cell phones out there.

What does hacking mean?

Hacking a device can imply all kinds of different activities. If you guess someone’s password, it could be classified as hacking. Also, installing monitoring software and someone spying on your activities can constitute hacking.

Ways an iPhone can get hacked

We have all heard of unsafe websites that can be dangerous for all of your devices.

If a website has too many popups and ads it’s better to avoid it.  Simply speaking, you never know if some of those sites contain malware that can damage your phone.

Also, you should avoid connecting to unknown Wi-Fi networks, and charging your phone on unsafe power stations. If you can, always charge your phone at home or somewhere you trust your surroundings.

One of the common ways an iPhone gets hacked is when you “jailbreak it”. This method is widely used by people on their own devices. Consequently, this is how your phone can get hacked. This way it’s more open to hackers.

Another way your phone can get hacked is by opening messages and emails sent by suspicious accounts.

Will I know that my iPhone is hacked?

If you notice apps that you didn’t download by yourself, messages you didn’t send or apps being opened when you are not touching your phone, know that it’s probably hacked. Anyhow, there is no place for panic. There are ways you can stop all of that from happening.

Protecting your iPhone

The first thing you can do is updating your software on regular basis. Before releasing, Apple tests all of its software, and omissions are rare.

However, your iCloud is much more sensitive to hacking as it’s an online account.

You should activate two-factor authentication everywhere you can, especially on iCloud.

If the hacking does happen, the first thing you should do is take your phone off the network and shut it down. By doing so you should be able to cut hacker’s access to your phone. Resetting your settings should restore your phone, thus this is only safe if you’ve backed up your phone regularly.

In the end, you shouldn’t fear getting hacked, but you should take all the security steps that are in your power. You can make hacking less possible by just being cautious.

The same goes for public Wi-Fi networks and websites with bad reputation.

If you see new apps on your home screen, emails, calls or messages that you did not send, then it is likely your iPhone got hacked.

Measures

You can take your device offline or switch it to Airplane mode. That will remove your phone from the network, and it should cut off the hacker’s access to it.

Wiping your iPhone can get rid of malware, so this would be the next logical thing to do.

Go to Settings, General, and then hit Reset. You can now check your phone to see if there is any further evidence of hacker activity.

You could also go to Settings, General, Reset, and then hit Erase All Content and Settings.

If you do this, then you will have to reinstall everything that was on your phone from a backed-up version with iTunes or iCloud.

That is not ideal, but you want to make sure any trace of malware is gone from the device, and it is entirely under your control again.

Being careful what sites you visit, what you click on, it is less likely that your iPhone will get hacked.

Some type of indicators or icons is available only when you have enabled a certain setting or you are using a certain service. With the aid of StatusBarSuite you can keep these icons invisible even when you are using those settings. It adds its own menu to the app of Settings (Settings/SBS Preferences), where you will find a separate option for toggle for each icon. The components that can be removed from the status bar are following.

• Battery icon (the percentage battery available is visible, you can turn it off from the Settings)
• Time display
• Name of mobile carrier
• Bluetooth battery
• Bluetooth icon even when it is active
• The current signal strength
• Wi-Fi and LTE icon
• The icon indicating the orientation lock status
• The icon showing the active alarm
• Do not disturb icon
• Airplane mode icon

In order to hide the particular element, the toggle must be turned off instead of ‘on’. The changes made through StatusBarSuite don’t become active until you restart the device for which the option is available at the bottom of the Setting menu of the tweak.

Another unique but buggy quality of StatusBarSuite is toggle option for ‘Hide Status Bar’. When you switch on this option, all the apps will become full screen. Unfortunately, this activity might lead to some crashes and problems with apps meant for displaying a keyboard. In our experience, the problems are small but not to be ignored in any case.

StatusBarSuite is a free app unlike Hideme7 that costs 99 cents. You can conveniently download it from the BigBoss repo of the Cydia store.

As your intuition goes, the configuration of the Messages Customizer has to be done from the menu that it adds to the stock settings app. Users can select different colors for their SMS bubbles, bubbles for received messages, and iMessage bubbles. In this way, the sent messages will be differentiated in one glance only. In order to change other settings of these bubbles, the ‘Wide Message Bubbles’ and ‘Show Message Tails’ toggles can be used. If you want to change the view of the Messages app, then the ‘Gradients’ and ‘App Tint’ options can be utilized. George Hotz (aka Geohot), the infamous hacker that was at the forefront of the first jailbreak of the iPhone, and who also published the Sony Playstation’s root keys which landed him in a serious lawsuit, has been hired at Facebook.

Facebook is the perfect place for hackers to work because of Facebook’s traditional hackathons – of which I’m sure Hotz does quite well against other Facebook hackers.

The hiring of hacker George Hotz shows that tech giants like Facebook can find great talent other than the ivory towers of places like Stanford and MIT.

I didn’t believe him at first!

Someone on the SMSEO Facebook fan page said that he wouldn’t get the iPad 3G, only the iPad WiFi, because what he’d do is use his iPhone as a WiFi hotspot for his iPad.

My response to him what “well, you must have jailbroken your iPhone because you can’t use your iPhone as a tethering hotspot – Apple doesnt’ offer that.”

But he insisted he was right, even to the degree where he posted the steps he takes each times he wants to use his iPhone as a WiFi hotspot.

So I went ahead and updated my iPhone to the latest iOS – which is iOS 4.3.1 – and what do you know, there was the option to turn my iPhone into a WiFi hotspot for up to five other mobile devices.

I thought you had to jailbreak your iPhone and use some unauthorized app to use your iPhone as a WiFi hotspot – but I was wrong!

For those of you that have at least iOS 4.3, simply go to:

settings > general > network > Set Up Personal Hotspot

And that’s it – once you get it set up, your iPhone now a fully authorized WiFi hotspot.

There is a catch however, AT&T subscribers wishing to share their iPhone’s data connection over Wi-Fi will have to sign up for the carrier’s existing $45 “DataPro 4GB for iPhone Tethering” plan, which includes 4GB of combined data for both regular and personal-hotspot use.

For its part, Verizon has a $20 add-on plan offering 2GB of mobile hotspot sharing on top of its standard (although soon-to-be-extinct) $30/month unlimited 3G plan, for a total of $50 a month.

Google to pay hackers $1000 for successfully hacking the Android OS running on Google TV.

Google TV, and the Android OS running it, has been successfully hacked, and Google is actually excited about it.

According to Google developer Howard Harte, “this means we now have a complete Android development environment for the Google TV.”  And with a successful hack of the Android OS, Google TV now has the ability to run Android apps.

Harte actually put out a contest offering any hacker $1000 for the first successful jailbreak.

A group calling themselves GTVhacker dev team rose to the challenge, and released a 6-minute video of their process of hacking Google TV.

Back in June, Apple tooks steps to fight the jailbreaking of their devices (iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch) by enabling a jailbreak detection API.

This nasty little API would actually shut down a device that was detected as being “jailbroken”.

What is Jailbreak you ask?

It’s basically when someone goes into the device (say an iPhone) and  removes Apple’s lock on the operating system.

Once a device is jailbroken, then any software, apps, and even other operating systems such as Android, can be ran on the iPhone.

Of course, Apple wouldn’t want this because it strips the exclusivity that Apple has on the device – keeping everything with Apple’s world.

Apple disables its jailbreak detection API

In the latest iOS 4.2 software update, reports are out that Apple has now disabled their jailbreak detection API.

Which also means that jailbreaking an Apple device will now proceed unhindered.

You might want to think twice before you jailbreak your iPhone. Even though jailbreaking your iPhone is now legal, Apple is making moves through patents to be able to actually kill your iPhone if it’s been jailbroken.

According to The Register, the application that Apple would like to use to kill jailbroken iPhones, and which was filed in February and published Thursday, specifically describes the identification of “hacking, jailbreaking, unlocking, or removal of a SIM card” so that measures can be taken to counter the user. Possible responses include surreptitiously activating the iPhone’s camera, geotagging the image and uploading it to a server and transmitting sensitive data to a server and then wiping it from the device.

So basically if you’re walking around with a jailbroken iPhone, Apple still perceives that as an Apple property and subject to Apple’s terms and conditions. And in the protection of all iPhone users, Apple will simply kill your jailbroken iPhone.

You’ve been warned!

Apple just released, as expected, an update to the iOS platform. The update is called iOS 4.0.2 for the iPhone and 3.2.2 for the iPad.

Both of these updates resolve the PDF vulnerability that is used by JailBreakMe – the program that automates the jailbreaking of your iPhone and iPad.

That’s about all there is to say about the update to the iPhone and iPad.

In fact, jailbreaking any iDevice (iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch) has not only gotten a whole lot easier, but it is now legal.

That’s right – according a new bill that passed in Congress, it is now perfectly legal to go ahead and jailbreak your iPhone or iPad device.

Yesterday, the iPad jailbreak release became available.

Today, as you might be expect, the web has been filling up with every type of “iPad jailbreak” article and video that  that you can imagine.

However, I’ve been able to find this one particular video that shows jailbreaking the ipad step by step.

The newest jailbreak for the iPhone, iPod Touch, and now the iPad, are available and compatible with iPhone OS 3.1.2, iOS 4.0.1, and pretty much every other Apple mobile OS in existence.

A couple of points about this new jailbreak that makes it more interesting than say past jailbreaks is that:

1) Jailbreaking is now legal

2) The new jailbreak is available 100% via the web

Previous jailbreak releases required you to download an app from your Mac or PC. But this newest jailbreak comes directly from the web!

Imagine having an iPhone running the Android OS!

Just the thought of it (I’m sure) makes the Apple fanboys shutter.

But, a new law just passed that makes jailbreaking an iPhone legal. So now the deep, dark underworld of iPhone jailbreaking can come out of hiding and actually start marketing their iPhone magic, to include having your iPhone run on the Android OS.

But so many more opportunities open up for the iPhone as well. Mostly, Apple no longer will have the leverage to keep such a tight grip on what people do (or don’t do) to their iPhones.

In fact, I see this new legislation that makes jailbreaking the iPhone more in line with open source…. capitalism even!

Maybe this will force the next generation iPhone (the iPhone 4GS, or the iPhone 5???) to be running on an open source OS.

The True, First iPad Jailbreak

I just read the article on PC Mag about what they are claiming to be the first iPad jailbreak and they are just wrong.

The person in that video only accessed the root directly of the Safari browser – this is a loophole in the SMTP of the browser that any hacker can do.

Jailbreaking the iPad implies that 3rd party applications can be installed and the iPad device is now open source.

iPad Jailbreak – iPad Is Now Jailbroken

There are a lot of articles on the web talking about how someone named musclenerd was the first person to jailbreak the iPad.

Let me be clear – the solution musclenerd provided was simply to access the root directory of the iPad 3.2 firmware – not to be able to download 3rd party applications.

It’s been just a little over 24 hours since the release of the iPad and we now have the very first iPad jailbreak.

I’m defining “jailbreak” as being able to install any 3rd party application on the iPad and completely by-passing the iPad OS 3.2 firmware.

A developer named Musclenerd claims to have jailbroken the iPad, but all he did was access the root directory – he did not open the iPad up to accept 3rd party applications.

This is the first official iPad jailbreak allowing 3rd party applications.

The video below shows the iPad start up and access the 3rd party software application Cydia – as anyone in the iPhone hacking world knows, Cydia could not be loaded onto an iPad without it being jailbroken.

iPhone 3G Tethering for iPad Web Access Anywhere

What you need:

Jailbroken iPhone

MyWi download in Cydia or Rock

3G data plan

iPad

How to do it:

1.Go into your Cydia or Rock installer app and search for “MyWi” Download and Install it. Open the app and name your network press ON.

The upload and download speed being so low was because I am in a basement with barly any service, usally it will be a pretty fast connection!

2.Go on your iPad into the settings and press on WiFi, Select the network you created!

Thats it!

iPad Jailbreak Solution with Windows 7

There are rumors popping up that an iPad jailbreak program is already in place, and guess where the iPad jailbreak program resides?

Windows 7…

From what I’ve read so far, when the latest security update to Windows 7 was released at the beginning of this week, something was included that will allow iPad owners to simply connect the devices via USB to their PC and the jailbreak will begin automatically.

According to the rumors that I’ve seen, the Windows 7 iPad jailbreak program is a result of the tension between Adobe and Apple, and the fact that Apple will not allow flash to be used on the iPhone OS – which powers the iPhone and the iPad.

So Adobe apparently had secret meetings with Windows and told Windows about some security flaws in the iPhone OS.

And from this meetings, Windows may have capitalized on the information and included an iPad jailbreak program in the latest Windows 7 security update.

I just saw this question hit the web – Has any jailbreak software been made public for the iPad?

This brought up an immediate question in my mind – how long will it take before we see the first jail broken iPad?

As it was with the iPhone, I believe so it will be with the iPad. The iPhone jailbreak only took what, a couple of hours? And I believe it was some teenage kids up in Massachusettes are something like that.

So how long before we hear of the of the first iPad jailbreak?

My guess is that thousands of hackers are hacking away as I write this.

Since escaping from his prison, Lynch has continued updating his Facebook status regularly – describing everything from the venison steak he just ate, to who might be his first girlfriend in 2010.

Unfortunately for the 4,000 plus fans that were following his updates, Facebook has taken down the fugitives fan page – it use to be location at .

Here’s are a couple of the more popular Facebook udpates he sent out while his page was still active:

Word of Craig Lynch’s Facebook page, and the story behind it, has spread quickly over the past couple of days which is why his fans have grown to over 4000, before the page was finally taken down by Facebook.

In my opinion, I think the authorities (and Facebook) should have left the page up.  Lynch would have probably become more comfortable with updating his status, which might have made it easier to capture him.

Oh well… the world will just have to wait for the next exciting drama to follow via social network – which should be happening any second now!
