Finding a Niche Topic

If your old approach began with you heading to Google Keyword Planner (GKP), throw it out. GKP focuses all its efforts on a single keyword, and build out from there. We’re going to expand your horizons.

Let’s say, you own an online business which sells primarily hiking boots. You head on over to GKP to see if you can find any ideas for target keywords. When you get there, you plug in the word hiking boots and come up with the following:

• Girls’ hiking boots
• Men’s hiking boots
• Brown hiking boots size 11
• Waterproof hiking boots
• And so on

Notice how each of the above builds upon the core keyword “hiking boot?” That’s the way GKP functions. But you don’t have to be limited by that narrow-minded thinking.

Yes, you’re building content to get more customers, but that’s a process. Marketing is a process. The buyer’s journey is a process.

A large part of that requires building trust. You want potential customers to read one article. Then you want them to come back and read another and another.

That’s the way you build brand recognition. It’s also the way you build trust and set yourself as an authority in your field. When you do that, customers will be flocking to you.

The best way to do that is to think non-linearly. This is where we lowly humans have the advantage over our silicon counterparts. Take a look at the list of keywords we came up with when we saw hiking boots:

• Mountain climbing
• Camping Trips
• Athletes foot
• Hiking backpacks
• And so on

We can still take these and plug these into GKP to come up with a variety of longer keywords. Even though these keywords are only indirectly related to the wares you sell, they’re directly relevant to the needs of your audience. That’s why they’ll read them.

The more you understand your audience, the better you’ll be discovering appropriate topics and keywords. Think beyond what you sell. Think about what your potential customers want.

Research Tools for Website Keywords

Please don’t think we’re suggesting you avoid using the fantastic tools that are available. No. Take advantage of those powerful resources, but don’t rely on them alone. First, take a look at the big picture.

Who is your audience? Narrow that down with laser precision. The more you know about them, the easier it’ll be to build content they actually want.

That builds trust and authority, as well as leads to higher conversions. In turn, you receive a bigger paycheck. Everyone wins.

Are there holes in your competitors’ content? If you don’t know what kind of content your competitors are dishing out, it’s time to learn. With services like those offered by Semrush, you can see the type of content your competitors are pushing out.

Then you can cheat. Look for areas they haven’t covered but are still relevant to your subject. You can also pick a few of their most popular posts and steal their core keywords.

After you’ve done that, it’s time to skip over and utilize some of those keyword research tools. Here’s our list of favorites:

Forums and boards

There’s no better place to start your audience research than the places they hang out. Forums and boards are where they go to complain, get advice, and share solutions. If you want to understand your audience read what they’re saying.

They’ll tell you exactly what they want to read about. The above are two popular sites outside your typical social media channels.

Idea Generators

These sites are idea generators. Punch in your subject, and the site will return some inventive alternative topics and keywords.

You can also use the following sites to discover related topics and keywords. In Wikipedia, type in the subject. Then look at the content listed by section.

This is the last ditch effort by Microsoft to revitalize Skype. The company wants to make Skype a mainstream app for video messaging and mobile communication. It tried its luck with Skype Qik, and failed badly. Skype Qik was closed down forever by Microsoft in March.

This is perhaps the biggest ransomware attack recorded in history. Cyber security experts had been cautioning the governments around the world to beware and ready for such hacks.

Experts are calling the latest cyberattack “WannaCry”, or WanaCrypt0r and WCry. Microsoft has launched its Skype translator app which could translate more than 50 languages into English and vice versa. The app is free and the beta version is now available for download for Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 technical preview users.

Microsoft’s new Skype translator app looks exactly like the normal Skype app. The only difference in the UI is the ‘Translation’ slider button. The app cannot detect the language spoken during the conversation automatically on the fly, which means before the start of conversation, you will have to specify which conversation language. Suppose you are going to chat with an Italian, just set the language of the conversation to Italian and you are good to go.
Skype translator app is still in the preview version, but it is a dream come true for businesses, Enterprise, students. The concept of live translation is pretty new; Microsoft has tapped in the right area earlier than its competitors.
Microsoft’s Skype Translator app works with any Skype client. You don’t need the app to be installed in the other person’s computer as well to enjoy the live translation.

A month ago, Microsoft announced that it is shutting down its Internet Explorer browser because it has failed to grab the market and it could not compete with Google Chrome and Firefox. IE was becoming a trademark for sloppy performance, slow browsing.

Microsoft said that it is launching a new project Spartan as its new browser. But as the it is clear from the name ‘project’ , it was clearly not the brand name of a service rather a generic project. Today, during the much awaited Microsoft build developers conference 2015, the company announced that the official new browser of Microsoft will be called ‘Edge’. It was a surprise for everyone, including the major tech players.

The smartphone market in the world experienced a 17% growth, which shows the massive potential and never-ending sales of the phones around the world.

Microsoft is still struggling in the mobile phone sector. IDC didn’t even mention it in the top smartphone players. Other reports suggest that Microsoft sold around 8 million smartphones in one quarter, which is half of the total phones sold by Huawei.

Microsoft builds and new features are being leaked on daily basis and this points out to a worrying factor: the Windows 10 OS is not completed yet and the company is still in the process of development, final touching. Microsoft’s Build Developers Conference 2015 is tomorrow and the Redmond giant will reveal the date of Windows 10 in the event. Stay tuned.

SunSpider test is the best benchmark test to check the speed of any web application because it checks for the JavaScript commands and most of the modern web apps and software run javascript.

Spartan failed the test for HTML5, the key factor in testing the performance of any browser. IE is far better than Spartan in HTML5, but surprisingly, FireFox wins in graphics rendering and content spacing test.

Microsoft will have to work a lot on its new browser, otherwise this would be another embarrassment for the Redmond giant.

Surface 3 looks exactly like Surface Pro 3 tablet, which is far costlier than Surface 3. But obviously, Surface Pro 3 has more power and storage. Surface 3 packs a 2GB Ram, 64GB internal storage. You will not get the accessories and covers in the $499 tag price. Microsoft also announced that you could double the RAM of Surface 3 in $100 extra. Surface 3 has ATOM X7 Cherry Trail processor.

Surface 3 tablet will have a one-year long free subscription of Office 365 apps. The best part is that it will be running full Windows 8.1— and would be upgraded to Windows 10 when it comes of course. This solves a lot of problems for the users who hate windows RT because of its inability to run the apps like we want in the original Windows productivity style.

Surface Pro 3 had a huge price tag and a lot of users were complaining. I think Microsoft has solved the problem as Surface 3 tablet can easily be labelled as another, slightly slow (as compared to Surface Pro), cheap version of Surface Pro 3.

Surface Pro 3 is now open for pre-sales and the general rollout will be done by Microsoft in May.

Internet Explorer is practically obsolete and irrelevant in the modern fast internet world. Google Chrome FireFox, Safari and other PC and mobile browsers have crossed Internet Explorer for years. Microsoft was persistent in its effort to improve Internet Explorer. Years after years of hard work, daily updates and feedback from users couldn’t improve Internet Explorer. The company has made a good decision by finally saying goodbye to Internet Explorer.

Internet Explorer will remain in the Windows platform for some Enterprise apps, but the primary browser for Windows 10 users will be Spartan. Chris Capossela, marketing chief of Microsoft said that the company feels that by giving a new name and feel to the browser can do wonders in the user base. But apart from aesthetics, Microsoft could garner a massive popularity with its new browser.

The internet world is yet to see a good, clean, memory efficient and fast browser. Google Chrome is a memory hog and a number of users have reported that Chrome consumes a lot of RAM. Mozilla FireFox, on the other hand is not stable, crashes and creates issues for the users.

At the start of February 2015, Microsoft announced that only the students of New York can avail the free subscription of 365 but now, surprisingly, Microsoft has made it available for all the students around the world. However there are specific countries and areas who can avail this service.

There are some terms and conditions to avail this service, school will have to qualify for this benefit by buying the subscription. Once bought, it will be available for teachers and students. Students will then be able to enroll directly with Microsoft. Active or part time students are eligible after meeting the following requirements:-

• Needs to have a school specific email address provided by the school to receive external emails.
• Legal age to sign up for it which is 13 years old.
• Should have an internet access.

Students can avail this offer until they are graduated or they are no longer enrolled with the school. Student’s eligibility can be re-verified at any time. When this plan is expired Office applications will work in a reduced functionality i.e. documents can be viewed but it cannot be edited or created also Office online and One Drive will not work.

One Drive account will be managed by school’s IT administrator to make sure that it is being used specifically for home works and school works. Permissions and access will be controlled by schools’ IT administrators. This plan cannot be shared with anyone outside school.

It is a free version with limited features, it includes unlimited amount of users. It does not   include full installed office applications.

For this package Schools will have to pay $2.50 per month per student and $4.50 per faculty   member per month. All the users will have complete access to all the features offered.

If a school cannot qualify for this plan then Microsoft has asked students to avail other options they are offering which includes Office 365 home, Office 365 University, Office Online etc.

Superfish helps users find and discover products visually, it instantly analyze the images on the website and offer the similar products in lower prices. Lenovo claims that it was unaware of this software which can grant hackers to have access to a user’s secure browser data, allowing third parties to potentially collect passwords, bank details and other sensitive information. Even the CTO of the Lenovo company, Peter Hortensius, said in an interview that they have made a mistake.

This software was included in some models of laptops which were sold worldwide between September and December. After receiving complaints from the users it they discontinued to pre-install it on to the laptops. This software is developed by the company named Superfish (same name as of its software) with base in Tel Aviv and Palo Alto and was also recently ranked 4^th on a list of fastest growing companies in US.

This software actually installs its own self-signed certificate which is a malicious technique known as man-in-middle attack, where the certificate allows the software to decrypt secure requests. The biggest threat in the security point of view is that hackers could use Superfish encryption methods and mistreat them to intercept other people’s traffic. For example, if someone is sitting in a coffee shop and is using public Wi-Fi then the owner could easily spy on any Lenovo user on network, collecting any password entered during the session.

Meanwhile, Lenovo is not pre-installing the software in the Lenovo machines. As some machines still have this software so they have asked the users to post on their forum in case of any concerns and they have also released full instructions on how to fully remove Superfish from their machines. A developer has also made a website which helps Lenovo users to know that if they are affected by security certificate and helps them on how to resolve those issues.

Source have claimed that Samsung Galaxy S6 will have curved glass screen on both sides unlike Samsung Note Edge, with has its one side tilted. The camera of S6 will also be sensational.

Another startling report from Sam mobile has claimed that Samsung has planned to quit its own OS and preloaded apps. The company will adapt Microsoft’s apps and UI. This will be huge if true. If Samsung pulls its preloaded apps from Galaxy S6, this would mean the end of S Health, S Note, S Voice. You can expect Microsoft’s OneDrive, Office 365(free), productivity apps in the next flagship of Samsung. Samsung is heavily changing its strategy to target the enterprise mobile users.

In an interview to Business Insider, Google for Work manager Amit Singh said that Google has a complete business plan to knock out Microsoft out of its primary turf. Google’s Cloud based docs suite of apps has the edge over Microsoft in terms of collaborative work, which is the primary need of the modern world. Although Microsoft has given OneDrive and DropBox integration in its latest Office for Windows 10 apps, people feel much comfortable using Google Docs.

Singh said that Google is garnering the customer base of Microsoft by harnessing the core features of Office in its Cloud based apps. Google’s analysis has shown that most of the people use Google Docs for light editing, reading and sharing. No one uses Google spreadsheet for heavy report making or invoicing. This is the area where Google lacks but Singh doesn’t care about this. He thinks that if Google is able to get to 90% of the user base of Microsoft, the rest will follow.

Microsoft acquired QuickOffice, a software which can open Microsoft Office documents. This move was to deplete Office penetration. How? Most of the users make their documents in office and when they share or work on them in a collaborative environment, they open them on Google Docs if Office is not installed on the device. Google Docs cannot open an Office document, but now that is possible with QuickOffice.

Next comes the pricing model. Microsoft works in a licensing model, which is costly as compared to Google apps. Google has no plans to convince the Enterprise to dump office and buy Google apps for work. They are cutting the costs and showing the performance, which will imbibe the companies sooner or later towards Google apps.

It is expected that Windows 9, codenamed ‘Threshold’, will be released on 30th September 2014. After the disaster experienced with Windows 8, it is anticipated that the new software will solve the problems encountered in the previous operating system. Major changes are to be made on the user interface. One of the changes you will notice in ‘Threshold’ is the lack of the Charms bar which was present in the previous operating system. The Charms bar is a sidebar that provided shortcuts to different functions in the system such as settings, search and devices. Another major change will be the return of the Start menu which was lacking in the previous version of the operating system. The Start menu enabled one to access various programs as well as live widgets embedded. The apps in Windows 8 will be able to run better in Windows 9 as they will be more flexible. Previously, they used to run only on full screen. Cortana, the digital assistant similar to Siri on Apple, may be available. This will make it easier for users to perform various tasks using the voice command feature. Rumors have it that Cortana will be tied to Bing, one of the search engines. The Facebook CEO may present a self-interested face to his stakeholders, owning 28% of Facebook shares and not hesitating to remind anybody who questions his decisions that he’s the primary stakeholder. Zuckerberg and his wife, Chan, have their own ideas about how to use their wealth, however, giving 18 million shares (valued at $990 million) via the Silicon Valley Community Foundation in 2013. The value of Facebook shares have nearly doubled since his first such donation in 2012, and Zuckerberg now sets the example for young entrepreneurs in Silicon Valley.

The new Apple CEO Tim Cook has donated $100 million to charities since taking over from the late Steve Jobs. Cook gave considerable amounts to Stanford’s hospitals along with disease-fighting organization Product RED, and encourages employee participation by promising to match employee donations up to $10,000 each year. Cook has been outspoken about Apple’s new philanthropic direction and will likely continue to donate in the years to come.

They have now provided more secure HTTPs communication by adding an advanced layer of ‘forward secrecy’ on basic protocol. This innovative approach will thwart the government agencies to spy on users.

Twitter was perceivably the first company to be serviced completely over the HTTPs protocol. Since then they have realized the importance of privacy of users and need of implementing strong algorithms for secure encryption to avoid spying on internet communication.

Former spy agent of US, Edward Snowden, revealed about the widespread government programs about spying on internet users. The US government is planning to have some secret internet surveillance programs. To avoid inconvenience for users and for preventing leakage of private information, internet companies have started to strengthen their security measures for spying. They have started using advanced encryption techniques for convenience of users. ‘Forward Secrecy’ is advanced version of HTTPs will be eradicate the attempts for intelligence work against common public.

Microsoft, Facebook Inc, Google Inc and Yahoo Inc have complained against the government efforts to prevent them for disclosing data collection services. Some internet technologies have introduced novel privacy technologies to save data of users. Internet is the world for research and people have complete right over their privacy so must be provided with strong internet security.

There is one potential weakness in standard HTTPs protocol. It was very easily possible to descramble the data if spies are able to get the single private key. Now there are more than one private key, different for each session so that data is not decrypted with just one key. It is the best strategy to protect the internet customers from intelligence efforts of government. Since the development of ‘Forward Secrecy’, people feel secured from external threats that their private data is getting leaked off somewhere. They are showing more confidence on sharing messages on various internet forums.

You know I do a lot of my paintings with my eyes shut? – Hal Lasko

Hal Lasko worked as a graphic artist creating typography when everything was created by hand.  It wasn’t until recently his family introduced him to Microsoft Paint.  Now he’s a master at Microsoft Paint “Pixel Painting”.  Basically he meticulously creates pixel paintings pixel by pixel. He says he would spend hours on one little section if he needed to, because he has patience.  His paintings are amazing because he’s doing the opposite of what many graphic designers do.  Instead of getting rid of choppy pixels, he’s making them.  You can visibly see them in his paintings that are hung in a local art gallery.  This could be one of the coolest things I’ve seen.  What patience and passion.

If it takes me 2 years to do that I can spend it. I’ve got a lot of patience, that’s what you really need anyway.

Microsoft said that they were excited to slash the prices and let it reach every person to enjoy its unique features.

Microsoft slashed the overrated Surface Pro Tablet earlier this month by 100$ on both the models, but the price cut was only temporary which helped boost their sales. And so later in the day, they decided to make a permanent change on the rates for greater sales and affordability by most of the people.

The Surface Pro when hit the markets was not a great sale due to the overly rated tablets. Hence the promotional price for a month was offered and as soon as the sales rocketed, it was justifiable on their part to make the discount a permanent one.
Though nothing has been mentioned about it in the company website, Microsoft says that the price change won’t be instantaneously amended. Microsoft revealed that price reductions would be done in a controlled and phased manner.

The news stating “Microsoft permanently lowers prices of Surface Pro tablet and accessories” surely did not ring any bells or get an exhilarated response because the change was both anticipated and desired.

So according to the news:
Surface Pro 64 GB will start at 799$ and 128 GB at 899$ (100$ discount)
Surface Touch Covers starts at 79$ and the Limited edition Covers starts at 89$ (40$ discount)
Surface RT bundles start at 399$ (50$ discount).

In an effort to attract more business and to answer the calls of its customers wanting a more affordable tablet, Microsoft Surface Pro price drops $100, a discount that applies to the 64 and 128 Gigabyte models. Along with the tablets, Microsoft is also including a discount bundle which includes a Microsoft Surface Pro, Home and Office Student 2013, a two-year warranty, type protector, screen cover and carrying sleeve. The discounts are a way to get people interested in RT machines again and it will last until the end of the month, so people still have plenty of time to purchase a Surface Pro before the discount is no longer applicable on August 29, 2013. Given its newly affordable price and how short the discount’s duration will run, those people who are wanting to purchase this tablet should do so, before the $100 price decrease has run its course.

The Microsoft Surface Pro is described as being a “tablet in laptop form,” meaning that it is a tablet computer that comes with a stylus and keyboard. It runs on Windows 8 and is both Wireless Internet and Bluetooth compatible. It can use a MicroSDXC card if more memory is needed, it has one USB port and a headphone jack. It runs on an Intel processor, like most Microsoft computers do. Despite its appearance though, the Surface Pro is not to be mistaken for being a laptop, as it is a tablet. The Surface Pro is quite similar to an iPad, even though it is not an Apple product, which should make fans of tablet computers quite happy. There are quite a few different accessories that can be purchased for it as well, ranging from carrying sleeves and keyboard covers (called Type Protectors and Touch Protectors), to additional power supplies and adapters. As it is a Windows 8 tablet, the Surface Pro can use any software that other Windows 8 tablet computers can.

Do you think this is because Microsoft is struggling with their tablet competitors, ie: Apple Ipad?

If you buy a Windows 7 PC starting tomorrow, you can upgrade to Windows 8 for only fifteen dollars.  People who buy Windows 7 PCs will go live tomorrow and last through January 31, 2013.

PCs preinstalled with Windows 7 Home Basic, Home Premium, Professional, or Ultimate can be cheaply upgraded to Windows 8 Pro under the offer. To qualify, Windows 7 PCs must be purchased between June 2, 2012, and Jan. 31, 2013, and have a valid Windows 7 OEM Certificate of Authenticity and product key.

To order the cheap upgrade, buyers will have to register through the Microsoft site by February 28, 2013

In  a way I feel like it’s smart of Microsoft to offer the upgrade at a cheap price, but then when I think about it I wonder why they can’t offer a Windows 8 upgrade for free if anyone buys on through valid dates.  I would expect that by doing that they would get more sales rather than anger people by charging extra to upgrade to the new Win. 8 OS.   What do you think?  Was is smart of Microsoft to offer the 15 Dollar

Here we go again Microsoft.  You once again have done something out of the box that might not necessarily be a good thing.  IE 10 which will be released in Windows 8 will have a Do Not Track or DNT signal set by default.  What does this DNT feature change?  For one, advertisers are in a rage about this feature because it will not allow them to track you.  For example, if you go to one website, then leave and go to another website you’ll see ads on the side of the website. You may notice that the ads pertain to the exact website you just looked at.  With IE10, you wouldn’t be able to see that advertisement because your tracking history would not be shared.  Advertisers are mad because they may miss out on custom ads or content as a result of this change.  As a longtime Adsense publisher, I’m sure I would see a significant hit from this, especially on some of my websites where the default ads are not too relevant.

This sixth Platform Preview of IE10 delivers improved performance and support for touch-first HTML5, as well as a new power-optimized, touch-friendly Adobe Flash Player that enables content on compatible Web sites to play in the Metro style Web browser. IE10 also sends the “Do Not Track” signal to Web sites by default to help consumers protect their privacy.

But there’s one area where Google is actually trailing behind both Yahoo and Bing, and that is search quality.  In other words, how much traffic is sent to a website when a search query is made.

According to IBTimes.com, Experian Hitwise states that for July, Bing and Yahoo were actually better than Google when it comes “success rates”, or the percentage of searches that “resulted in a visit to a Website”. People using Google ended up on a website 67.56 percent of the time, while Bing scored over 80 percent and Yahoo topped them all at 81.36 percent.

It’s important to note that Yahoo.com recently (about 1 year ago), inked a deal with Microsoft to allow Bing to power the Yahoo search engine.  So Yahoo.com no longer is, in and of themselves, in the search engine business.  So the marketing, promotion, and quality of the search results that are growing for Bing.com are also having an impact on the Yahoo search engine.

At the end of the day however, and at least for the time being, the money is where the masses are and that’s on Google.com.  Until Microsoft can build a stronger marketshare in the search space, Google will continue to dominate the landscape.
