How to manage iCloud storage

If you do not know how to manage iCloud storage follow these steps.

1. Tap on Settings, then General and later Storage & iCloud Backup.
2. Look at Total Storage under the iCloud heading – this should say 5GB.
3. Check the Available Storage, this will be the amount that is available on your account. Keep a note of this as you will need to get your device under this limit later on.
4. Tap on Manage Storage.

Additionally, take a look at the Documents and Data storage options.

Here you should see all the apps using iCloud. These are taking up storage on iCloud with the Documents in the Cloud feature.

Follow these steps to remove documents and data from apps.

1. Tap the name of the app in Manage Storage
2. Click Edit
3. Select Delete All and Delete All again

Bear in mind that this deletes all of the data you have created in the app, so you should use it carefully.

Use this if you do not really use an app. If you want to delete files from an app individually open the App and manage the files from within it.

Manage backup

Furthermore, if you have removed documents from iCloud and still do not have enough space for your backup, then you probably have to manage the backup.

Firstly, open Storage and tap on the device you want to manage under Backups.

This will display the Info window for that device.

Moreover, if you look at the “Next Backup Size” you should see how much space your device and apps will take up on iCloud.

Following the listed steps will free up some space on your device.

1. Look under each app under Backup Options to see how much space is taking up
2. Identify apps that use a lot of storage, and toggle the switch next to the App to Off
3. Tap Delete
4. Tap Manage Storage
5. Check that iCloud Backup is set to On. If not tap On and OK
6. Click Back Up Now

Resetting your phone

Resetting your iPhone means completely wiping the data on the device and returning it to factory settings.

The day I found out I had enough points collected over the lifetime of my MasterCard, my mind went crazy thinking about what I could buy.  Shortly before this I was thinking of how useful and fun an iPad would be, so naturally that’s what I leaned towards.  I already have an iPhone, Macbook, and Magic Mouse (I guess you could say I’m loyal)  so an iPad made perfect sense.  I ordered the iPad with a nice case and took it on a business trip.  I found it to amuse me in a very similar way that my iPhone 5 does.  After the trip I used it a few more times around the house, but after a few months I entirely neglected my iPad.  I couldn’t find one use for it since my iPhone was more convenient.  As a web developer, when I do use the internet, I need my Macbook.

Without the need for the iPad it really made me think, am I the only one that feels like there is no need for an iPad?  I know a lot of people enjoy them with their kids or for job tasks, but I just can’t justify having one laying around the house.

That being said, I’m selling my iPad.  My next purchase?  An Apple 27″ Cinema Display so I can hook up my Macbook.

Susan Bennett recorded voiceovers eight years ago for a client and had no idea what would happen with her voiceovers after that. Now her voice is one of the most recognizable voices in the world, broadcasted on every iPhone.

“The Siri voices were recorded in 2005 in the month of July, four hours a day for the whole month,” Bennett told CNN. “When I recorded those voices, I had absolutely no idea where they would end up.”

How to update your phone to IOS 7

Step 1: Before you update, be sure to back up your phone using iTunes or iCloud.

Step 2: If you look at your home screen you should have an update notification on your settings icon if the update is available (just like my reminders notification below).  It’s a little red circle with a number 1 inside of it.  This will indicate you have an update.  Click on settings > general > software update to start your update.

It should be as simple as that!  As long as you created a backup in the first step there isn’t much risk.  If you happen to receive any IOS 7 errors or bugs, let us know and we’ll try to find a solution for you.

Well, the time his here.  The time to update to the new IOS 7 has come and will be released today.  On the East Coast, they say around noon.  Anyway, before updating it’s very important to create a backup of your phone, especially after the errors and problems we experienced when updating to IOS 6.

How to prevent errors?  The short answer is, there isn’t a way to be 100% sure there won’t be any hiccups, however we would recommend doing the following so your update goes as smooth as possible:

1.  Make a backup of your current phone with iTunes (see instructions below)

2. Are all of your apps necessary?  This may be a good time to clean up some of your old apps before upgrading, especially since there is a possibility the app developer needs to update their app because of bugs.

3.  Update all of your apps ahead of time.

Again, insuring you have a backup of your phone is the most critical item to preventing any problems when upgrading.  If you have a backup you can easily revert back if you need to.  One thing to keep in mind when backing up is to also make sure you have the correct items checked off to back up in iTunes.

How to back up your iPhone before installing iOS 7

Your iPhone gets backed up to one of two places: iTunes on your computer or iCloud (in the cloud).  Either way you can create a quick backup before updating to IOS 7.

Back up to iTunes

Step one: Connect your iPhone to your computer via USB cable.

Step two: By default, this will launch iTunes and start the sync process, which includes making a backup. However, if your iPhone isn’t set to auto-sync, continue on to step three.

Step three: Click the Summary button for your iPhone. Then, in the Backups section, click the Back Up Now button. This process might take 30 seconds or several minutes.

Back up to iCloud

Step one: Make sure your iPhone is connected to a Wi-Fi network.

Step two: Tap the Settings icon, then tap iCloud.

Step three: Tap Storage & Backup, then Back Up Now. Again, this might happen quickly, or it could take a while.

That’s it, you should be fine to update your phone or IOS device to IOS 7.  You can update your iPhone by going to settings > general > software update (you should now see a red circle indicating there is an update on the settings icon).

Apple has always been the brand setting high standards in the smartphone arena. Whether it be swanky features in its each new ios or startling looks of the iPhone, Apple has been setting the benchmark to compete with. But with Microsoft and Google right on its tail, one can expect the smartphone war to spice up in the near future.

With the launch of two new smartphones, iPhone 5S and 5C, Apple already has the attention of everyone. And its a very smart move by Apple to launch the ios 7 update on September 18, just a few days after the launch of its two new iPhone. An all new Search. Just swipe down on the home screen and find the search box, users are no longer needed to swipe to a dedicated screen to access search.

Password Problem, not anymore. Well you no longer need to remember your multitude of login accounts or even your credit card details. Now Apple would store them in iCloud and fill in automatically the next time you login.

Camera got Wider. That’s right all the iPhone 4 and later can shoot in a larger Panoramic Format. Also one can focus with the volume button- neat.

Sharing made Easier. One complaint that Apple always have dealt with is the frustrating experience while sharing files or media. The users were required to send text or email to share but not anymore. Apple has finally come up with AirDrop, enabling the user to share files via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth with the people nearby.

But unfortunately AirDrop would only be available to iPhone newer than the fourth generation. Another astonishing feature, the Fingerprint ID Function, would also be available only on the newer devices. What else we can expect, that would be revealed with the launch of ios 7 on September 18.

The Microsoft Surface Pro is described as being a “tablet in laptop form,” meaning that it is a tablet computer that comes with a stylus and keyboard. It runs on Windows 8 and is both Wireless Internet and Bluetooth compatible. It can use a MicroSDXC card if more memory is needed, it has one USB port and a headphone jack. It runs on an Intel processor, like most Microsoft computers do. Despite its appearance though, the Surface Pro is not to be mistaken for being a laptop, as it is a tablet. The case was brought forward by the U.S. Justice Department alongside 33 states; they accused Apple of colluding with publishers from late 2009 to early 2010 with the aim of undercutting other providers such as Amazon. Apple pleaded innocent to the charges, arguing that the company was not aware of the fact that the five publishers – Hachette, HarperCollins, Penguin, Simon & Schuster, and Macmillian – had been in talks with one another about the possibility of pushing the price of e-books up. The publishers have already settled out of court, to the tune of $166 million.

“There is no such thing as a conspiracy by telepathy,” noted Apple’s lawyer, Orin Snyder, in reference to Apple’s alleged ignorance of the attempts at price-fixing. Apple is determined to overturn the ruling, with a spokesman iterating the company’s intention to, “continue to fight against these false accusations.” Apple executives have protested the injustice of being taken to court based on their implementation of an “agency” pricing model – which prevents e-books being sold cheaper on platforms other than iBooks – when several other companies use the same pricing scheme. The court ruled that Apple’s use of this model forced other providers into similar arrangements with publishers, pushing prices up throughout the industry.

The ruling has left Apple shares down by $1.60 this morning, with the shares currently trading at $420.75. Thus far there has been no immediate comment from either Apple, its lawyers, or the Justice Department.

Samsung which is a bitter rival of Apple Company is warming up for the release of a wearable device. The wristwatch being developed will be able to perform a number of tasks that a regular computer is able to perform. Therefore, this name ‘iWatch’ carries more than meets the eye. Sale economics dictate that a brand name is as powerful as consumers of the product/service. Products are more often designed and named to make them marketable. There is an expected battle from these electronic companies that is set to change what people wear around their wrists. The tasks that an ipad or Iphone performs are essentially going to be performed by these wearable devices.

This discriminate thievery has now forced Apple to implant a ‘kill switch’ in these products as a deterrence to would be criminals. Apple’s Senior VP of Software Engineering, Craig Federighi announced Apple’s intention to install a ‘kill switch.’ He made this announcement as the Annual Worldwide Developers Conference where he was delivering a keynote address. This was in San Francisco just this Monday, on June 10, 2013. He was optimistic about the positive effect it would have in reducing overall crime and ‘apple picking’ in particular.

The latest Apple operating system, the iOS &7 will built with this unique feature programmed into it. This operating system should be ready by September this year. The entire ‘kill switch’ process happens online if the need for it arises. The owner of the stolen Apple product, either iPad or iPhone will have to enter both his Apple ID and his password into the Apple online activation system. The stolen phone will cease to operate. This will effectively kill the phone. It will be unusable by the thief that stole it or any other person to whom the thief sells the phone.

Moreover, all the data stored on the phone including the SIM card will be safe. Neither the thief nor any other third party can access it once the ‘kill switch’ is active. The additional data safety mechanism offered by this system has received worldwide applause from mobile industry analysts and consumers of Apple’s products as well. Security agencies such as the New York Police Department have praised this latest move by Apple and are hopeful that other Smartphone companies will follow suit.

Google delivers yet another blow to Apple after they just updated their maps to make finding places and friends easier than ever.  They now have a set of icons where you can filter your searches making it a lot easier to find a gas station, restaurant or coffee shop.  Android users have had this feature for a little while now but IOS users have been missing the feature.  How many times have you searched “restaurant” in your search bar?  It makes a lot more sense to have the main icons there!

Some of the motorists located by police have been stranded for up to 24 hours without food or water and have walked long distances through dangerous terrain to get phone reception.

Police have contacted Apple but there hasn’t been any feedback from Apple when the issue will be fixed.

It seems companies are starting to market holiday sales earlier and earlier.  Before Halloween was over I started seeing Christmas supplies in stores!  It used to be a sale right after Thanksgiving, but now they are also starting to give deals before Black Friday.  Walmart released their New Black Friday Ad for 2012 already. Apple’s introduction to the IOS 6 completely changed the way you use GPS.  At first glance, you’ll notice slightly bigger icons, along with turn-by-turn signs that are a lot more helpful than the older, Google map application where you didn’t have any easy to read notification of your next turn.  The downside to the new IOS 6 map app is that it doesn’t actually move to the next turn unless you click on the location arrow at the bottom left corner.  At least, that’s the way it was functioning when I was using it.  Maybe it was because it couldn’t refresh my location where I was?  I’m not sure, but overall I would say the new map for the iPhone is much better than the older Google maps application.  I’ll have to continue to use it and test to see if I actually like it, but so far so good!

1. Settings > Wi-Fi > (Network…) > “Blue Circle Arrow”

   Scroll down to the bottom of the screen and set:

   HTTP Proxy to Auto

2. Press the sleep and home button to shut it down and then power it ON again. It will fix the problem.
3. Go to Settings >> WiFi and turn it off for a few minutes. After you turn it back on, it should work

How to Upgrade Your iPhone to IOS 6

1. It’s simple, go to settings > Wi-Fi and make sure you are connected
2. Now that you’re connected go to settings > General > Software Update > then download
3. You may want to be plugged into a power source or turn down your brightness like I did.  Good Luck!

iPhone / iPad  Errors After IOS 6 Upgrade?

I haven’t heard of any issues yet and my update is still downloading.  If I find anything strange I will definitely list it here.  Alternatively if you have an error after your iPHone IOS6 update, please list it below in the comments and we’ll see if there are others with the same issue and if there is a fix.

The UDID is a unique 40-digit code assigned to each iOS device and is often used by developers to distribute beta apps to an iOS device. Besides the UDID, some records in the FBI database also contained names, addresses, mobile phone numbers and other identifying information. The group stripped out most of the personal information from the 1 million leaked records, but left the Unique Apple Device ID, Apple Push Notification Service DevToken, Device Name and Device Type, so users can search for their device.

First find your Apple UDID

To find your iPhone’s UDID, just plug it into your computer and wait until iTunes recognizes it. Select your phone from the Devices list in iTunes and click the “Summary” tab. To see your UDID, click on the word “serial number” beside the picture of the iPhone. You should see the word “identifer” and an alphanumeric string – this is your UDID.

I don’t use the iPhone Yelp App too much but I wanted to check it out quickly before I updated it, then see what changed with the update.  Right away I noticed a cool swipe feature to view the restaurant information and an easier to read, more functional layout.  I looked at some of the reviews on the iTunes page and I’m hoping they are not referencing the new app because I don’t see any issue with the way it works!  Here are some before/after pictures I took.  What do you think about the update?
