YesterdayIranians thought a government ban had been lifted after they were able to access Twitter and Facebook on Monday. Some users were able to get to Twitter and Facebook without going around the government firewall which lead them to believe authorities lifted the ban on social media websites. Authorities had placed a ban in 2009.

“The lack of a filter on Facebook last night (Monday) was apparently due to technical problems and the technological committee is investigating this issue,” Khoramabadi was quoted by Mehr news agency as saying.

“We are investigating to see which of these companies has done this,” he said, referring to the Iranian ISPs.

Since Iranian President Hassan Rouhani took office last month, there has been a muted thaw in the use of social media.

On Friday, Facebook gave the world an early Christmas gift with its new messaging system called ‘Poke’ – a play off Facebook’s “Poke” function.

This new app gives users the ability to send complex messages like text, photo or video, but the messages are similar to the Snapchat services, in that the messages are real-time and only available for a few seconds. The Poke messages can be sent to individuals or a group and they’re only visible for up to 10 seconds.

Snapchat, the service similar to Poke, has been steadily growing in popularity since its launch in 2011. Last week, the service reported that more than 50 million messages went through its site in a single day. However, the time-limit life-span for each message has given Snapchat a reputation for making it easy to send graphic or inappropriate message, as those messages quickly perish soon after they are sent.

In an effort to deter this kind of behavior, Poke has a built-in feature for reporting messages or users that are behaving in a manner that one may be “uncomfortable with.”

Facebook’s Poke app is currently a free download available on the iPhone, and it adds to Facebook’s growing mobile application portfolio, which includes Facebook Messenger, Facebook camera, and Instagram. All of this mobile attention comes for good reason: comScore reported in May that Facebook users spend more time on Facebook through mobile devices than through computers.

Clearly, we can expect Facebook to continue creating and optimizing their apps over the next year. We’ve already seen examples of this behavior with Facebook’s recent release of native versions of their apps for Google’s Android and Apple’s iOS operating systems.

As a parting note, some users have expressed concern about Facebook’s Poke app, as it can potentially increase spam by allowing users not to disengage from the message. The person receiving the message has only a short amount of time to report it, otherwise it’s deleted.

The app loaded a bit slow when I re-opened it but I’m sure it was just a cache reload.

The top menu bar seemed bigger

You can now swipe to go back to the main menu

Buttons seem larger

More responsive

Loads way faster after it’s already opened in my dock

After clicking, pages seem to slide (I don’t remember if it did this, but it’s cool)

Icon seems brighter (I know it’s weird I notice these details. It was a bit darker and tough to see on a dark background.)

That’s it for now. I’ll have to explore more to see what they improved, but it’s already a lot better.

As if we aren’t getting flooded with Facebook’s recent attempt to make a bigger profit by increasing sponsored ads in your news feed, they are planning yet more ads to be placed into your news feed.

Here are a few recent ad formats I noticed that are popping up all over Facebook. Shockingly they even changed their simple homepage to advertise their new appstore:

Here are some very obtrusive ads I’ve been noticing on mobile Facebook that really suck:

Wow, how many more ads can they put in our news feed? Apparently they are going to start placing ads in news feeds that don’t have anything to do with your likes or interests. Previously they would display ads based on your preferences, but all that has changed now that they are starving for ways to make money!

Facebook is rolling out a new Facebook Offers feature, which will allow businesses to create coupons and publish them to a news feed. The offers can be distributed through your customer news feed or even promoted as a Sponsored Story.

It’s not surprising that Facebook is releasing a feature like this, especially since they’re moving towards additional ways to monetize. They tried launching Facebook Deals, but that didn’t catch on. So instead they launched FB coupons still targeted towards businesses but with a different approach. I think it’s a good idea, however I feel that Facebook is starting to get flooded with Apps, Memes (stupid pictures, quotes), Ads, and now Coupons from businesses! It’s turning into a big advertisement. I think I could write a whole post about how Facebook is actually on a downfall, but I’ll get to that later.

What do you think, are Facebook Coupons a good thing?

After you thought Facebook was rid of spammy apps, like viruses auto-posting to your
Facebook account, it doesn’t seem like it’s come to an end yet. For the average non-tech suave Facebook user, it’s confusing when an app auto posts a friends wall since it seems like a virus. There are viruses and there are apps that push the boundaries of spam and privacy. The Facebook Birthday Card App by “Greetings” is very close to that boundary. This application, once you approve it, will auto-post birthday greetings to your friends on Facebook without you knowing. Not only will it post cards, but it posts them a day before so it’s the first birthday post on their wall. A lot of users of this app fall for the trap and think it’s nice that it auto posted a greeting on a friends wall, but I think it’s just downright creepy. (By the way, if you haven’t learned how to de-creepify your Facebook Timeline, you might want to check out the article I wrote.)

I also noticed, after doing a Google search, it seems like it’s a common problem people are having with this app:

How to disable birthday card application on Facebook

How can I get rid of this weird greeting card app on Facebook?

How do I stop my Facebook sending birthday cards?

HELP! Keep sending random greeting cards to ALL my Facebook contacts. How do I turn this off please?

How to Remove the Greeting Card Virus

Why do I think the “Greetings App” is spammy and borderline virus-like you ask?

Just look at what it will post on someones wall below once you give it permission. Most likely people giving the app permission don’t even notice they are because they want to actually see the greeting card. I haven’t even looked at the greeting card, but of course it’s a load of B.S. to get traffic to this greeting app. So you click on the card, give them information and it then has the permission and power to auto-post birthday cards on friends Facebook walls without you knowing!

Here is the permission acceptance that many click through quick not knowing what they are accepting:

Why of course I will give you permission to post on my friends walls and access my data anytime (this is sarcasm).

How to remove this Birthday, Facebook application or any other annoying app!

Now click on “Apps” from the left hand menu, then click the “X” to remove any apps you do not want. It will confirm that you want to remove it, just click “remove”.

There, that wasn’t hard was it? It feels good to remove those useless apps so you don’t look like a creep posting stuff on walls that you don’t even know about! Share and enjoy!

Takeaway:Is your iPhone Facebook Application frozen again? This is a common problem, your application hangs and doesn’t pull your news feed at all. Quickly use these troubleshooting techniques that will unfreeze your Facebook app so it can pull your news feed again.

This works to unfreeze your iPhone Safari or other Browser too!

The other day my iPhone froze on the Facebook application. This wasn’t the first time it’s happened and I’m sure it will happen again. Whenever I face this annoying problem I use the following techniques to get that app up and running again. This is primarily for an iPhone 4 but I’m sure it will work an iPhone 3G and possibly the iPhone 5 when it comes out.

Troubleshooting Step 1 : Disable Wi-Fi Connection on your iPhone

This technique works for the Facebook issues but it also works when your iPhone’s browser or Safari freezes and you can’t browse the internet, even though you have full service. Sometimes if there is a connection issue with your Wi-Fi connection it messes up your entire internet connection on your iPhone. I know, it doesn’t make much sense, you would think if there was a problem with the Wi-Fi connection it would just default to your iPhone service provider, but this isn’t the case (at least with my phone).

How to Disable iPhone Wi-Fi Connection

On your iPhone home screen go to:

Settings > Wi-Fi

If it’s already off, move on to step 2 below because we know it’s not the Wi-Fi signal causing the problem.

If it’s on:

It sounds like a no brainer but: Tap the button to turn it off! You can always start up your Wi-Fi again when you need to. This problem doesn’t always happen with Wi-Fi.

Close out of the settings and try opening your Facebook App again. Go to your news feed and refresh it by dragging the page down and letting go. If it was the problem was the Wi-Fi then you should now see your news feed! If Step 1 didn’t work for you go to Step 2 below.

If your Safari or Browser is Frozen on your iPhone

Follow the same procedure in Step 1 and turn off your Wi-Fi. Open Safari and refresh the page or try going to a new website. If the internet is working again then it was the Wi-Fi connection causing the issue.

Troubleshooting Step 2 : Reset Your Facebook Application

When you close out of your applications on your iPhone, you normally just click on the close button at the bottom of your phone. This closes the app out but it doesn’t actually close it completely. The app is only suspended and still in your phone memory. You’ll need to do a complete reset or close-out of your application.

Double tap your menu button at the bottom of your phone to bring up a list of open/suspended apps:

Press on the Facebook icon and hold the icon until you get a shaking application image with a red “X” hanging off of it:

If your Safari/Internet wasn’t working on your iPhone just find your Safari icon and do the same.

Open the application up again and it should start working again.

If these steps didn’t work try a hard reset on your iPhone:

Hold down your home button and the button on the upper right hand corner of your phone.

I hope this article helped you with your iPhone problems and I’m sure at least one of these steps should have worked for you!

Facebook plans on creating a 9/11 Live stream to mark the 10th anniversary of 9/11 on their website. Facebook will Livestream “9/11: 10 Years Later — An Evening of Remembrance and Reflection,” from the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.

The tribute will feature readings from Colin Powell, Condoleezza Rice, Madeleine Albright and artists Denyce Graves, Emmylou Harris, Melissa Leo and Wynton Marsalis; ABC News’ Christiane Armanpour hosts.

Tune in at 7:30 p.m. Eastern Standard Time by clicking the “9/11 Livestream” tab on the Facebook pages of the Kennedy Center or The New Republic.

9/11 Tribute Facebook Application

Honor the nearly 3,000 men, women, and children who perished in the attacks of 9/11. Dedicate your status, update your profile photo, and tell us how you’re remembering.

The 9/11 Memorial application, built by Facebook app maker Involver, was released Wednesday, just days ahead of the 10th anniversary of the tragic attacks.

“The goal of the application is to honor and remember victims of this devastating attack on America, 10 years later,” explains Involver‘s Senior Vice President of Marketing Jascha Kaykas-Wolff.

The 9/11 Memorial Facebook App allows users to dedicate their Facebook profile picture to show you remember those who suffered during 9/11. There is also a donation button so you can donate to one of the 3000 victims of 9/11. If you prefer, you can even dedicate your profile picture to an individual who was lost.

One of the greatest advancements in Facebook Fan Page customization was when Facebook deprecated the FBML app and allowed apps to be added to pages that utilized full HTML. This one single move opened up a whole new world of Facebook page customization and utilization.

However, one of the biggest complaints from developers – at least initially – was when the Facebook page app wasn’t quite right in either height or width and you’d get a scroll bar.

Well it seems that Facebook has resolved this issue for developers with ‘Fluid’.

Fluid is a new feature in the Facebook app’s height and width settings. Instead of checking a fixed width or “show scroll bar”, you can now select ‘Fluid’ and your app will adjust automatically to remove the scroll bars.

Let me know if you are using ‘Fluid’ and still have problems with your scroll bars.

The simple answer is quite simply to search for the app you are looking for using Facebook’s search bar.

According to Facebook (see quote below), the reason the Facebook app directory is gone is because no one ever really used it.

Product manager Carl Sjogreen posted on the Facebook Developers Blog:

Many developers have been confused about what it means to submit to the app directory and frustrated by the length of time it took to get approved. As we have looked into this issue, we found that the app directory drove less than 0.5 percent of all app installs, while a significant number of app installs came as a result of Facebook search. Until now, to be visible in search, you had to submit your app to the app directory.

Today, we are announcing two updates to decouple the search submission from the directory to make it easier for you to get your app into the Facebook search index:

We are removing the app directory (in its current form) since it does not drive a significant amount of traffic to your apps.

We are creating a new, simplified way to get your app into the Facebook search index.

For your app to show up in search (if it’s not already listed and has over 10 monthly active users), simply go to the developer app and click the “submit to search” link in the left sidebar when editing your app.

After clicking the link, we will submit your app to our search index. There is no longer an approval process for getting your app into search. When you make any changes to your app settings, we will automatically update the listing. It can take up to 72 hours for your app to appear in search results. As always, there is no approval process for launching an app on Platform.

We do not expect any noticeable decrease in traffic to your apps as a result of these changes and continue to focus our energy on social channels that deliver meaningful distribution to your apps.

So you are going to be missing the Facebook app directly?

According to Facebook, more than likely you never used it in the first place.

What are you thoughts about the Facebook app directory being gone?

A discovery has been made deep in the coding language of the new Facebook video calling app that suggests Facebook could have something VERY big up its sleeve.

The uncovered code hints at a possible Facebook online music service that would compete with the likes of iTunes, Google, and Amazon.

Here’s the code that was discovered by software engineer Jeff Rose:

if(paramString.equals(“com.facebook.peep”))
return this.window.getMember(“VideoChatPlugin”);
if (paramString.equals(“com.facebook.vibes”)) {
return this.window.getMember(“MusicDownloadDialog”);
}

Note the last line of actual code where it says “MusicDownloadDialog”.

Of course, this is the first solid sign that Facebook could be developing an online music store.

No one really knows anything at this point.

But why would the same batch of code for the new Facebook video calling app have a reference to “MusicDownloadDialog” in it?

Is it possible that Facebook’s online music store could also be integrated into the new Facebook video calling?

Thoughts?

This coming after a federal appeals court ruled against the Winklevoss twins when they tried to get more money from the Facebook settlement they won back in 2008.

The twins felt they were entitled to more money in the light of the current valuation of Facebook.

If the Winklevoss twins did pursue an appeal, the case would have to be heard by the Supreme Court.

Facebook is about to become even more embedded into your life with a recent FTC approval that would allow a certain background check company to use your Facebook photos as part of an applicant verification process.

According to Forbes, The FTC determined that Social Intelligence Corp., in compliance with the Fair Credit Reporting Act, is allowed to analyze what you’ve said or posted to Facebook/Twitter/Flickr/blogs and the Internet, and in general may become a standard part of background checks when you apply for a job.

It’s interesting, back in July of 2008 when Apple first released the App Store, Facebook had an official iPhone app ready to go.

And it’s even been argued, perhaps a bit of stretch though, that the success of the iPhone can be directly attributed to the Facebook app.

Regardless, this sense of urgency from Facebook did not carry over to the iPad.

Now, according to the NYTimes.com, Facebook will be releasing an official iPad app within the next several weeks – perhaps by the end of July.

One person who works with Facebook said Mark Zuckerberg, the company’s chief executive and founder, has been heavily invested in the process, overseeing design decisions and the app’s unique features, according to the Times.

When you look across the social media spectrum, I can’t help but notice one glaring, obvious disconnect. This disconnect has baffled for months now, and to this day, it’s becoming even more of a mystery. And the question is this…

Where is the Facebook iPad app?

With the high velocity of sales of the first iPad, and even higher velocity of sales of the iPad 2, how can Facebook not be releasing an iPad app for all those devices?

Is it because of Microsoft is perhaps weighing in on the issue and somehow forcing Facebook from creating an iPad app?

After all, Microsoft is a shareholder in Facebook.

Or is it simply that Facebook is waiting for developers to step up and create the ground breaking iPad app?

I don’t know what the answer is, but it’s certainly a baffling mystery to me.

What do you think?

With the new addition of the Facebook Fan Page iFrame tabs, a whole new world of customization and “brand ownership” has opened up to businesses.

Not only are brands able to build highly customizable Facebook tabs out of pure HTML, javascript, and CSS, but you can now brand your tab with a cool little web icon.

With the old FBML apps for your Facebook page, you were restricted to that dull, boring web icon for your custom tab. This is the small, gray icon that showed up underneath your Facebook page logo in the tab navigation section.

But with iFrame tabs, you can fully customize your tab’s web icon so your Facebook Fan Page starts to take on more of a “website” navigational feel, and gives you – the brand – the ability to fully own and customize your Facebook pages.

The way you add a customize web icon to your Facebook iFrame tab is as follows:

1) Login to Facebook

2) go to your iFrame app (located in your Facebook developers section)

3) click “edit settings”

4) in the middle of the next section you’ll see the “icon” and the “logo” – the “icon is the image that controls what shows up in navigation section on your Facebook Fan Page.

Here’s an example of a Facebook page where I customized each iFrame tab currently running:

The only criteria for your Facebook iFrame tab icon is that it needs to be 16×16 pixels in size.

As you can see above in the image, I set a custom web icon that relates to the content located on each of those custom iframe tabs.

This will help you personalize your Facebook Fan Page and build your own unique brand on Facebook.

Don’t underestimate the power of having a web icon for each of your Facebook page iFrame apps.

With the recent introduction of full html and javascript capability for Facebook Fan Page iFrame tabs, it only makes sense that Facebook would add HTTPS capabilities. Some users browse Facebook only in HTTPS browser mode, which means they are browsing Facebook securely.

Well when someone visits your iFrame tabs in secure mode, if your apps are setup with an HTTPS URL, then the tab won’t be presented.

This will also allow app developers to potentially integrate payment methods and credit card forms to their Facebook Fan Pages. With an HTTPS canvas URL, the page where the credit card form resides would be fully secured.

To make your iFrame tab HTTPS capable, simply add your URL to the “Secure URL” field in your Facebook app.

This is pretty exciting stuff, in my opinion!

I’ve spent the last couple of days tweaking my other blog – TabletCrunch.com – into a blog that serves a dual role as a traditional blog and now also a Facebook app.

You know those Facebook apps, right? Apps like CityVille, FarmVille, MafiaWars, etc…

Well, Tablet Crunch is now both a blog and a Facebook app.

The HUGE benefit of having an app on Facebook – well, actually there are quite a few benefits – but one of the major benefits is the ability to expand your traffic base and drive new, high quality, and highly social traffic to your blog.

And because this traffic is streaming to your site via the Facebook app, which is your site running within an iFrame on Facebook, you benefit from Facebook’s highly efficient servers. This means, your site can get huge spikes in traffic via Facebook, and your site will be chugging right along, deliver every page view efficiently to your viewers.

How to make your WordPress blog a Facebook app:

First of all, to transform your blog, or any site for that matter, into a Facebook app, you need to know certain parameters.

The magic number – or the magic parameter that is far more important than all others – is the “760px width” parameter.

Facebook apps can only run at a maximum of 760px wide.

So what I did with TabletCrunch is I basically deleted the current theme I was using, which was basically a custom theme I’ve been hacking at for the past 6 months, and rebuilt the theme from ground to fit the 760px wide parameter.

The entire site is now optimized to run at 760px wide – the sidebars, my Adsense ads, the main content, navigation, header… everything.

Take a look at TabletCrunch here as it looks live on the web – here’s a screenshot for you as well:

Now check out the TabletCrunch Facebook app here (again, a screenshot for you as well):

The customization of your WordPress requires you to do a lot more than just adjust the container width to 760px.

Some other major points of concern and adjust to consider when converting your WordPress blog into a Facebook app are:

navigation bar width and font adjustments

Facebook app scroll bar code to remove / optimize the scroll bar

sidebar adjustments to width and height

Adsense adjustments to the ad sizes you integrate

Re-thinking the placement, size, and type of plugins

Keeping your site “reader friendly” outside of Facebook

Favicons

Let me stop here to make a point about the favicon and it’s relevance in your Facebook app.

Whatever you use as a favicon (the small 16×16 image that you see in your browser tab and in the address bar for your blog), this will be the same image that is used to identify your app in user’s profiles.

This is a really big deal, and one of the ways that your Facebook app – which is your blog running within the Facebook graph – will get a lot of repeat visitors from Facebook.

The way apps are displayed now in Facebook user’s profiles is on the left hand side of your home screen. Check it out – login to Facebook > click “Home” in the upper right hand corner > now look along the left hand side of your profile you should see a list of apps.

The apps are typically listed (or ranked) according to your level of use. Meaning, the you engage a particular app, the higher it will eventually climb in your list of apps.

So basically, the most used apps work their way to the top.

The huge benefit here to having your WordPress blog running simultaneously as a Facebook app is the more people visit your blog on Facebook, the higher that little favicon image, along with your blog’s (or Facebook app) title will rank on user’s profiles.

I know that for me, that apps I use the most are always present to me when I’m on Facebook.

Imagine now if your blog was one of those apps – I’d be returning to it constantly throughout the day, simply because I see it constantly while logged in to Facebook.

With your blog just sitting out there on the web, I’m a lot less likely to remember to go visit it – on Facebook, as it’s own application, it will be presented to me continuously while I’m using Facebook.

I’ll be writing more “step – by step how to’s” shortly on how to make this happen, so stay tuned.

Until then, what do you think about the idea of building / converting WordPress blogs (or even your website, other blogs, etc…) to play an additional role of serving as a Facebook application?

Pretty much any site that is optimized for the proper width and height can be converted into a Facebook application.

Thoughts?

I’ve written previously on how to build iFrame tabs for Facebook Fan Pages.

And in that article I described how to remove the scroll bar issue that a lot of apps are plagued with.

I also wrote an article called 2 Ways To Remove Scroll Bar from Facebook Page iFrame Tab Apps.

Well, I’ve since learned that code works only part of the time.

And for developers who are trying to get things done, when you have something like a scroll bar issue, and it’s been 5 hours later and you still haven’t fixed it, it’s important to get help wherever you can.

So I found some new code that has, quite honestly, worked 100% of the time for in resolving the scroll bar issue with Facebook Fan Page iFrame tabs.

I’m going to give you just the framework (header and closer) tags of the code – you just need to include your content in between.

If nothing is wrong with your content code, then this should work everytime at removing your scroll bar issues on your iFrame tabs.

But one thing that has seriously annoyed me are the games that keep pushing new messages and updates to me – on a non-stop basis.

Point in case – CityVille.

I get no less than 20 updates and messages from the CityVille app each day. And today I had enough, so I wanted to remove it.

It wasn’t the easiest thing in the world to do, I have to admit.

Some people might laugh at this, but I couldn’t easily and quickly find a way to get rid of the CityVille app, all the while fear was overcoming me as I new any second now one of my friends was wanting me to be their neighbor!

Here’s the easy way to remove yourself from an app:

So here’s what I did to quickly remove myself from the CityVille app – which would be applicable to any app on Facebook.

1) Visit the actual app on Facebook – for example, go to CityVille as if you are going to play the game.

2) Once you are physically at the app, scroll all the way down to the bottom of the screen and you’ll see a gray’ish looking text link that will be the name of the app > go ahead and click that text link.

3) Now you should be at the app’s page on Facebook . This looks just like a Facebook Fan Page. Now you need to scroll down to just below the fan box on the left hand side and find the link that reads “Remove App” > go ehead and click it.

And that’s it.

You have now removed yourself from the that app and you’ll no longer receive any updates or notifications from that app.

I’ve been asked several times from people about the possibility of running Google Analytics for the new iFrame tabs.

And so I’ve been searching for a way since last week to make this happen – to make Google Analytics run within a custom iFrame tab on a Facebook Fan Page.

The benefits would be great because you’d be able to see what kind of traffic your new app was getting.

However, my searching came to end yesterday when it occurred to me why Google Analytics, or GetClicky, or any other analytics tracking code for that, cannot run on an iFrame tab.

The reason is because iFrame tabs are iFrame’s.

Duh… really?

I realized yesterday that because these pages are an iFrame running within Facebook, the application that you build it not generating it’s own unique page views, only the page views from within Facebook.

So in the traditional form of pasting your Google Analytics code into an iFrame app, it’s not going work.

This doesn’t mean, however, that traffic analysis is not possible – because it is.

But the analytics integration has to come from within the code and frame of Facebook, not Google Analytics.

The bottom line – is it possible to analyze traffic to your iFrame apps?

Yes.

Will it happen by pasting Google Analytics, or any other analytics code, into your iFrame tab?

No.

Stay tuned as I continue down this road of generating analytics for iFrame tabs.

Not only in creating custom iFrame tabs, but also in creating Facebook applications as well.

WordPress URLs are very friendly for iFrame tabs because they always end in a forward slash. This makes the pages, according to Facebook’s definition, a directory upon which the application’s content can be extracted.

One great way to use WordPress to create your iFrame tabs for Facebook Fan Pages is to use a “custom template” within your WordPress blog.

Set the custom template to a width a 520px for Facebook page iFrame tabs, and 720px width for Facebook applications.

Learn more about creating custom templates here.

Have you found that using WordPress is an easy way to create your Facebook page iFrame tabs?

Can you provide some links to your apps you’ve created with WordPress?
