Google is going to launch is MVNO wireless service today, WSJ claims. Google’s move is a direct threat to famous carriers like Verizon, T-Mobile and other companies. Google wants to make an ecosystem around its devices. This is why the company is making a major disruptive move which will have repercussions in the market.

Google’s wireless service will only charge you for the data you use. Users will be able to claim a refund for the unused data if they opt for packages. This is a great feature which will imbibe a number of users towards Google’s new services because the current carrier are bad when it comes to user satisfaction.

Initially, Google’s wireless service will only be available for the Vanilla devices—- the Nexus devices which are developed by Google. But the search engine giant has its plans to expand the services across the US.

The best part of Google’s wireless services is that you will be able to switch in-between different carriers. So if you see that the signal strength of Verizon is strong in a specific area, you could quickly tap and switch to Verizon.

The pricing model of the Google’s new wireless service hasn’t been revealed yet. Google has confirmed that it has plans to launch its own wireless service. Google will route your calls and messages via Wifi to reduce your bills.

“Hey Santa, I bet you can’t beat these deals!!!”

That’s what a kid, acting a little bit rude might say to our Christmas Merry-maker up North… But it’s true!

These are absolutely the hottest deals, that you will not want to miss – at unheard-of prices.

First, we’ve got the Sony Wifi Blu-Ray Player. Going on sale at Thanksgiving, this one time retail price of $105.00 is going straight down like a ho-ho-ho-ing Santa Claus, sliding onto your roof-top! How can you beat the Black Friday price of $55.00. Get it at Target!

Wait! Don’t spill that Thanksgiving cranberry sauce out of excitement! There is also a Nikon L320 Digital Camera that was $229.00. On Black Friday it is a super low price of $99.00! It is selling at Target too.

And if your kids stay up late, and they open that Nikon L3320 Digital Camera gift a little early, they might take a picture of… One of Santa’s Little Helpers – an elf with an another gift! This time it is the Kindle Fire 7″ HD 16GB Tablet. Originally it was $169.00. On Black Friday get it at Staples where it will be only $79.00!

And don’t forget the Element 50″ 1080p LED HDTV. It was $599.99, but at Target on Black Friday it will be $229.00. Rudolph, quit staring at your red nose, reflected on that shiny new LED HDTV!!!

Get up a little late on Black Friday? Don’t sweat it! Cyber Monday has some outstanding deals too. Amazon.com says that it has got 50% off LeapFrog LeapPad2 Learning Tablets – an Amazon Exclusive!!! And Amazon also has 50% off SpongeBob and VTech toys. Wow! Those gifts will keep the kids out of their parents’ hair!

On Friday, Apple released the latest iOS build to developers called iOS 5 Beta 2. This means it should be coming as an official update to your iPhone soon.

Two of the more prominent updates to expect from the latest iOS update are the new lock-screen notifications and over the air updating, available via WiFi and 3G.

Both 3G and WiFi updating support will allow you to upgrade your iPhone without ever having to plug your device into your computer and iTunes.

Another cool feature with the iOS 5 update will be the lock screen notifications.

As you can see in the screen shot below, simple notifications will start stacking up on your home screen from apps like your calendar and text messages:

I didn’t believe him at first!

Someone on the SMSEO Facebook fan page said that he wouldn’t get the iPad 3G, only the iPad WiFi, because what he’d do is use his iPhone as a WiFi hotspot for his iPad.

My response to him what “well, you must have jailbroken your iPhone because you can’t use your iPhone as a tethering hotspot – Apple doesnt’ offer that.”

But he insisted he was right, even to the degree where he posted the steps he takes each times he wants to use his iPhone as a WiFi hotspot.

So I went ahead and updated my iPhone to the latest iOS – which is iOS 4.3.1 – and what do you know, there was the option to turn my iPhone into a WiFi hotspot for up to five other mobile devices.

I thought you had to jailbreak your iPhone and use some unauthorized app to use your iPhone as a WiFi hotspot – but I was wrong!

For those of you that have at least iOS 4.3, simply go to:

settings > general > network > Set Up Personal Hotspot

And that’s it – once you get it set up, your iPhone now a fully authorized WiFi hotspot.

There is a catch however, AT&T subscribers wishing to share their iPhone’s data connection over Wi-Fi will have to sign up for the carrier’s existing $45 “DataPro 4GB for iPhone Tethering” plan, which includes 4GB of combined data for both regular and personal-hotspot use.

For its part, Verizon has a $20 add-on plan offering 2GB of mobile hotspot sharing on top of its standard (although soon-to-be-extinct) $30/month unlimited 3G plan, for a total of $50 a month.

via Yahoo tech

White space could be the key to moving the United States toward ubiquitous WiFi coverage – meaning, WiFi coverage in all places within the US.

What is white space?

It’s the unused public airwaves (TV bands) that literally fill the air in the United States. And it’s believed that these airwaves (white space) will lead to the next generation of WiFi connective and wireless device technologies.

Just yesterday, the FCC released an order designating nine companies – including Google – to take the role of administrator over the white spaces database.

The FCC order also outlines specs as to how these nine companies can manage, experiment, and test the white space.

Here’s a list of all nine companies:

Developer Eric Butler has produced a web browser add-on called Firesheep that makes viewing and using people’s private, sensitive information over wireless networks easy for even complete novices.

Butler reportedly had good intentions in creating this very dangerous tool. Because of its ease of use, Firesheep’s potential for doing damage is huge. Butler explains that “it's extremely common for websites to protect your password by encrypting the initial login, but surprisingly uncommon for websites to encrypt everything else. This leaves the cookie (and the user) vulnerable.” Because of the widespread exploitation of such security holes, Butler contends that he created Firesheep “to demonstrate just how serious this problem is.”

The casual coffee shop visitor who whips out his or her laptop to enjoy some free Wi-Fi service has more reason to be concerned these days.

Butler explains that “it’s extremely common for websites to protect your password by encrypting the initial login, but surprisingly uncommon for websites to encrypt everything else. This leaves the cookie (and the user) vulnerable.” Because of the widespread exploitation of such security holes, Butler contends that he created Firesheep “to demonstrate just how serious this problem is.”

Firesheep works by snatching up “cookies”—packets of information that websites use to keep track of your login session and preferences—as they’re transmitted through the network unencrypted. With those cookies, someone can easily masquerade as you by logging into your favorite social networks. In theory, proper layers of encryption would stop Firesheep and similar programs from intercepting such wireless transmissions, but normal interaction with social networks like Facebook and Twitter usually doesn’t involve such security. Indeed, reports of hacking into people’s Facebook profiles are popping up all over the Internet.

Keep in mind that whenever you attempt to access the web through a public Wi-Fi network, you’re a potential target for hackers. Whether you’re in Starbucks sipping a latte, on your college campus, at a restaurant at lunch time, or at a bookstore, there’s the potential that someone is there just waiting to snoop around your ever-so-personal social network profiles.

Not only should wireless internet users be aware of their vulnerability, but they should know how to counteract it and fight back. It turns out that Firesheep can be thwarted by strong layers of security, particularly encryption. For users of Firefox, an extension called HTTPS Everywhere makes popular websites (that is, as many as support the HTTPS protocol) to use encrypted login information throughout an entire browsing session. It’s also possible to use a VPN (Virtual Private Network), which essentially creates a direct encrypted link between your computer and the Wi-Fi hotspot.

There is also a new program created in response to the alarming number of Firesheep downloads (an estimated 200,000 within a week of it’s release) . Icelandic student Gunnar Atli Sigurdsson has created a small standalone program called FireShepherd, which works by “[flooding] the nearby wireless network with packets designed to turn off FireSheep, effectively shutting down nearby FireSheep programs every 0.5 sec or so, making you and the people around you secure from most people using FireSheep. ” This program is a temporary, but innovative measure that exploits one of Firesheep’s own vulnerabilities.

All in all, people should still practice sensible Wi-Fi safety measures. When using public Wi-Fi, one should not use social networks or other sites that contain extremely sensitive information. When it comes to security over unsecured networks, prevention is always the best policy.

How about some half-and-half with that coffee? Or as of today, an exclusive digital network that all Starbucks customers can access from their computers and other wireless devices while lounging around at the famous coffee chain?

Though it already took the step to make its Wi-Fi access completely free for customers only mere months ago, Starbucks is taking things up another notch with the launch of the Starbucks Digital Network.

Built in a partnership with Yahoo, Starbucks’ network provides customers with premium access to sites that normally require a subscription, like the Wall Street Journal, iTunes, Nickelodeon, SnagFilms, New York Times, and much more.

Coffee enthusiasts can take up residence in one of the various bar stools or oversized couches in Starbucks, prop their laptops or iPads in their laps, and click away to enjoy the content. They will be able to read digital versions of the nation’s top newspapers, enjoy free books and book previews, stream and watch movies, television shows, and user-uploaded videos, and download exclusive music tracks especially picked out by Starbucks.

Even the business workers who hang out at Starbucks will have something to enjoy, with access to websites like LinkedIn as well as a free trial to some popular job hunting services.

To make things even more inviting, Starbucks also ensured that all of the content provided on the Starbucks Digital Network is built entirely in HTML5, making it completely compatible with smart phones and tablet technology so that no one is left out of the loop.

All of these things work to enhance the customer experience at Starbucks, which in turn will encourage them to go back for a second and third cup of coffee rather than rushing out the door as soon as they hit the cardboard bottom of their hot latte.

Coffee rage will also be averted as customers waiting for their caffeine fix can easily look through what the network has to offer and focus their attention elsewhere instead of concentrating on how long it takes to get a macchiato brewed.

Best of all, all of the content provided by the Starbucks Digital Network will be free.

Seeing as how Starbucks already reaches out to create a unique experience for customers with its exclusive music compilations and other related aspects, it only makes sense that a digital network be the next step.

After all, a great number of Starbucks’ clientele do work at the coffee chain, whether they are students studying for the next big exam or business workers hammering out a new proposal.

Making the Wi-Fi experience more personal and Starbucks-friendly is a great way to reach those customers. It is only a matter of time before other popular establishments follow suit and create their own free Wi-Fi experiences for their most loyal patrons.

The need to be connected to the Internet is becoming critically important these days. From just checking your Facebook stream to business travelers needing to remain “plugged in”, the ubiquity of the Internet is a huge need.

So out of this need to always be connected, one savvy entreprenuer decided that he was tired of traveling around the US and not knowing whether his flights had Internet connection (WIFI) or not. And HasWifi was created.

With HasWifi, you can now check your flights to find out if you have WiFi connection. This can help you determine whether you want to purchase the ticket or not, and find flights that are Wifi enabled.

Anthony Petito, the founder of HasWifi is also contemplating an API that traveling sites like Expedia.com could use to integrate into their booking services.

Mr. Petito said this about why he built HasWifi:

“Several months ago, I had a slew of flights that took me across the country. Since they were all booked back-to-back, it left little time between trips where I could actually hop on an Internet connection to get work done.

My solution was to use the wifi on the plane instead. The problem was that I had no idea if the flights I booked would even have the option available to me. After hours of searching the web, the airline carrier’s website and even GoGo’s own website I still had absolutely no idea.”

It’s quite possible that with the exception of the United States, China holds the most lucrative market for Apple products – especially when that product is the iPad.

On Monday, China’s Caixin Media announced that China Unicom, China’s second largest mobile phone carrier, has won the rights to sell the iPad in the China market, both the Wi-Fi and 3G versions of the iPad.

This follows right on the heels of China Unicom announcing they will be selling the iPhone 4 starting in early September.

China Unicom is wasting no time capitalizing on this new found favor with Wi-Fi policies and selling Wi-Fi enabled products in the Communist country. Last week, China Unicom started selling the iPhone 3GS Wi-Fi (no 3G) version and was sold out on the very first day.

The Chinese government has previously placed restrictions on mobile Internet access which prevented companies like Apple, and carriers like China Unicom, to enter the high end data device and mobile Internet market. In fact, China restricted the use of any device that was capable of Wi-Fi radio.

These restrictions have been lifted by the Chinese government, and now Apple, China Unicom, and anyone else that can profit from the mobile Internet, are moving quickly to capitalize on this new market freedom.

I think this is also a reflection of how the political landscape is changing in China and how they Chinese government is realizing the benefits of a more open market system. It was announced earlier this week China is now the second largest economy in the world, bumping Japan down to the third position and of course, the United States stands at number one.

Although the reports are sporadic, there are reports nonetheless that 4G is being picked up by various Sprint customers at various locations throughout New York City.

New York City is a major hub of cell phone activity in the United States – perhaps the biggest hub – and Sprint 4G showing up in this market could mean a big boost in Sprint’s customer acquisition and expansion of market place. This is especially true if Sprint can be the first to arrive in the New York market.

Know Your Cell reached out to a Sprint spokesperson for comment and was reassured that 4G service has not yet launched in New York:

We have not launched 4G in NYC yet. As they have been recently, customers may continue to stumble across 4G from time to time in NYC as we work to build, test and optimize the network.

So are we close to seeing 4G arrive in the NYC market, and will Sprint be the first one to arrive on the scene?

This is important (for Sprint anyway).

Clear has just released a portable 4G hotspot that is compatible with all of your Apple devices (iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch, etc…). Simply plug it in, and up to 8 of your iDevices can be cruzin’ the web at 4G speeds. The WiFi router from Clear operates off of Clearwire’s 4G WiMax network. You can get a Clear 4G router for only $29, and a monthly data plan of $25 per month. This is a “take it with you anywhere you go” 4G connection, and again… only works with Apple devices.

Exactly why Clear has launched an Apple only 4G router is unclear. Especially since the only 4G enabled mobile phones on the market at the moment are Android powered (non-Apple) devices.

So what do you think about the the iSpot 4G portable hotspot?

Will you be purchasing an iSpot anytime soon?

n

You would think that New York City would be leading the way with this, but after nearly 3 years of planning, New York’s subway system will be getting wifi and mobile phone service.

New York City is now taking steps to give subway riders something that people in Berlin, Singapore, and Australia have had for quite sometime – access to wifi and cell phone service.

The project was launched back in 2007, but the company awarded the contract lost financial backing during the recession. Now the company had new financial support and expect to be done with the project by 2017.

With the fact that AT&T has supplied Time Square with free WiFi access, and now the subway system in New York, I don’t think it will be long before WiFi becomes ubiquitous.

Take this thought one step further and look at the introduction to a 4G satellite that will cover the entire United States, and you’re now looking at WiFi expansion efforts as near frivolous activities.

I’m predicting that sooner rather than later, internet connectivity will be everywhere, for everyone, and for every device.

And it will be free!

All of this will make devices like tablets, the iPad, etc… even more appealing and more widely used.

Welcome to the age of the tablet device!

As Apple is reeling from all of the negative publicity generated from the faulty iPhone 4, not to mention the scathing negative review from Consumer Reports, there is another handset that is lurking in the shadows, ready to launch and attack the Apple iPhone user base.

That device is the Motorola Droid X by Verizon, and it’s release date is now less than 2 days away (July 15th, 2010).

Most people believe that the Motorola Droid X is the best response to the iPhone 4. The Droid X has a 4.3-inch touch screen, speedy processor and an 8-megapixel camera – the iPhone 4 has a 3.5 inch touch screen. Wow… that’s nearly a 1 inch difference!

The Motorola Droid X can also act as a WiFi source for up 4 WiFi enabled devices via the Verizon data plan.

Currently, the Droid X is running on the Android 2.1 OS but Verizon said they will be sending out an auto update to all Droid X customers to upgrade to the Android 2.2 OS.

So the Droid X is massive in size with a large touch screen that make watch videos, displaying apps, playing video games, browsing the web, and interacting on Facebook and Twitter more like being on a laptop than on a mobile phone.

What do you think – is the Motorola Droid X the best response so far to the popular iPhone 4?

Velocity Micro has just announced a new lineup of tablets that are set to target niche markets such as e-readers, standard tablets, and kids. The Android Cruz StoryPad tablet for kids is a great idea, and features include apps that will help children to read, count, do math, etc…

Earlier today there were leaked photos of what was being called the new XBOX 360 Slim. The leaked images apparently originated from an Italian website called ConsuleTribe, and the rumor kept spreading from there.

Then later today, Engadget pursued the story about the new XBOX 360 Slim and posted the inside scoop on Microsoft’s new gaming console.

According to Engadget, the XBOX 360 Slim will officially launch today – and that came directly from Microsoft. Microsoft is also promoting the new XBOX 360 gaming console as being “whisper quiet” with only one large fan instead of the two – fan system that previous XBOX 360 ‘s have. The new 45nm chipset undoubtedly generates less heat to begin with. On the features front, it’s got integrated 2.4GHz 802.11n WiFi, five USB ports, and 250GB of storage on a removable hard drive, although it’s not a standard drive or same drive as the old console, and older Memory Units won’t work, either.

[source Engadget]

XBOX 360 Slim Pricing

The pricing that is being promoted from the announcement is $299. And again, this new XBOX 360 gaming console is said to be released today.

XBOX 360 Slim Release Date for Europe

According to Microsoft XBOX Twitter profile, the New Slim Xbox 360 console will be available in Europe on July 16th.

Name of the new XBOX 360 up for debate

There has also been some discussion around Microsoft’s new XBOX 360 regarding the name that Microsoft is giving it.

Again, as you’ll notice in the update from Microsoft’s official Twitter profile for the XBOX 360, they have actually called it the New Slim XBOX 360.

So I would say that should settle any disputes left regarding the name that Microsoft is giving the new XBOX 360.

And the update will also included wi-fi hotspot connection, which will allow you to use your Android handset as a portable wi-fi hotspot. Now what has not been determined is whether or not carriers can disable these features or charge a fee for using them.

If the cell carriers don’t disable these features or try and charge a fee for using them, it could be a good reason for business users & consumers to buy an Android handset instead of an iPhone. And with these features and the Google Voice service you really wouldn’t need cell providers voice plans. I guess we will have to see how these features will be used injunction with the handset’s carriers at the Google I/O 2010. So tell me what you think of these features? And does it make you want to buy an Android handset that can run Android 2.2?

iPad Ban in Isreal – 10 iPads Already Confiscated

If you are planning a trip to Tel Aviv, or anywhere in Israel for that matter, you better just go ahead and leave your iPad at home.

Isreal has placed a ban on all iPads coming into the country.

Already, 10 iPads have been confiscated from travelers entering Israel.

The CSMonitor is saying that the refusal of the ministry’s engineering staff to compromise on testing the device’s suitability and compliance with Israeli wireless networks is the culprit to the iPad ban in Israel.

Here’s a quote from the source,

“The iPad device sold exclusively today in the United States operates at broadcast power levels [over its WiFi modem] compatible with American standards,” according to statement published by the Monitor. “As the Israeli regulations in the area of WiFi are similar to European standards, which are different from American standards, which permit broadcasting at lower power, therefore the broadcast levels of the device prevent approving its use in Israel.”

Apple has reported that over 500,000 iPads have been sold so far in the United States and that a shortage of supply is now delaying the shipping of international iPads.

Sales in all other countries except the US have been put on hold, creating a potential spike in the price that international customers might have to pay in order to get an iPad.

This is obviously going to create a massive reselling of iPads on sites like Ebay by US based sellers trying to sell the iPad to International buyers at steep profits.

Verizon iPhone Tested Over WiFi in the US?

According to Engadget, they received a tip that Flurry Analytics was showing data that could have AT&T devices were being used on Verizon’s data network.

The speculation initially was that this device could have been an iPhone being tested at Verizon.

This rumor would have confirmed, or at least brought closer, the concept of an iPhone being released at Verizon.

Here’s what Engadget had to say:

a snippet of data allegedly from the recently reliable Flurry Analytics — then at least a handful of non-AT&T phones are currently in play.

The numbers show a polling of carriers a particular app is being tested on, and there’s no denying that Verizon is most certainly on that list… albeit in small numbers.

Now obviously this is in no way conclusive evidence of anything, and you’ve got to allow for the possibility — however pathetic and slim — that someone is just Photoshopping this little infographic, but if it’s accurate, well… that’s something.

Update from Engadget:

Engadget came back and udpated their article with some news back from Flurry who said that the data is actually from Verizon DSL of FiOS subscribers using their iPhone at home over their WiFi connection.

However, there is no disputing the fact that both Apple and Verizon are wanting a Verizon enabled iPhone.

Since the release of the Apple iPad on Saturday, MacWorld has been reporting that support forums have been blowing up with customer complaints of the iPad WiFi being unstable.

According to Wired, Apple’s support forum contains several reports from users complaining about their iPad’s behavior with Wi-Fi networks. Some complain their iPad’s Wi-Fi signal is very weak, while others say they’re unable to join their network after waking iPads up from standby.

In a support bulletin, Apple on Monday acknowledged an issue specific to dual-band Wi-Fi routers — those that are compatible with both 2.4-GHz and 5-GHz spectrum bands.

“Under certain conditions, iPad may not automatically rejoin a known Wi-Fi network after restart or waking from sleep. This can occur with some third-party Wi-Fi routers that are dual-band capable when: Using the same network name for each network, [or] Using different security settings for each network,” Apple wrote.

Typically, dual-band routers transmit both the 2.4-GHz and 5-GHz bands as one network with the same name and password. Apple recommends splitting the bands into two separate networks, naming them differently and making sure that both networks use the same type of security (WEP, WPA, WPA2, etc).

If all else fails, Apple recommends resetting network settings in the iPad’s Settings app (Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings).

The release of the iPad yesterday came with a lot of hype, but one thing it didn’t come with is the ability to access the Internet outside of a WiFi hotspot.

Ryan Hypnal (@ryanrohypnol) developed a solution that will allow you to use your iPhone 3G as a tethering device for your iPad.

Here’s how your tether your iPad with your iPhone 3G:

1.Go into your Cydia or Rock installer app and search for “MyWi” Download and Install it. Open the app and name your network press ON.

The upload and download speed being so low was because I am in a basement with barly any service, usally it will be a pretty fast connection!

2.Go on your iPad into the settings and press on WiFi, Select the network you created!

Thats it!

*MyWi has a 10 day Trail after 10 days it will cost you $9.99 USD; ONE TIME FEE! “But well worth it since the AT&T data plan is 15-20$ a month!”

The iPad was just released yesterday, in case you didn’t know. But the release yesterday was the “WiFi only” version. This means, you will only access the web in a WiFi hotspot like your home, Starbucks, or anywhere else a WiFi connection is available – or unless you have a jailbroken iPhone, then you can do this.

iPad 3G & ATT’s unstable network

One thing that concerns me about the upcoming iPad 3G is the fact that AT&T is handling the data plans. This means a whole new army of devices are going to tapping into AT&Ts already unstable data network. A network that is so unstable that people in large metro areas such as New York, Chicago, and San Francisco actually have dead spots.

Is AT&T going to be able to handle it?

So the big question of the day is this – will AT&T be able to handle the onslaught of new data subscribers?

One thing’s for sure, they are all set to take your monthly payments!

But based on their historically atrocious service, I’m a bit standoff’ish on purchasing an iPad 3G simply because of AT&T’s data network.

What do you think?

Do you think AT&T is ready for the iPad 3G?

If you think you are going to get an iPad 3G tomorrow, then you need to just stay home!

There’s been one looming issue I’ve had with this whole iPad release taking place tomorrow.

There is no 3G!

It’s really been perplexing to me as to why Apple would release the iPad without 3G. With the success of the iPhone 3G, people obviously want fast internet access on their device.

The iPad 3G isn’t going to be available until later this month – April 20th is the latest I’ve heard. I believe Apple is launching this first version simply because of the hype and sales frenzy that will happen – not because it’s the best product for you, the iPad consumer.

So in my humble opinion, it’s worth waiting the 2 or 3 weeks to get the 3G model.

After all, as soon as you turn it on you are more than likely going to want to do something that requires web access!
