Apple sold 61.2 million iPhone in first three months of the current year. This gives is around 18% of the market share. Last year, Apple was on the top and Samsung was ranked on the second position by IDC. However, Samsung’s growth rates declined by 7%, but it still is the number one phone seller in the world.

Lenovo, Huawei and LG are the next players in line.

It is important to note that when it comes to growth rate, Apple beats Samsung. Apple smartphone sales grew by 40% year over year.

The smartphone market in the world experienced a 17% growth, which shows the massive potential and never-ending sales of the phones around the world.

Microsoft is still struggling in the mobile phone sector. IDC didn’t even mention it in the top smartphone players. Other reports suggest that Microsoft sold around 8 million smartphones in one quarter, which is half of the total phones sold by Huawei.

According to Gartner, Apple has around 20.4% market share in the overall phone market. Samsung’s share is on the decline and in Q4 2014, Samsung market share went to 19%. The reason behind the loss in the market share of Samsung is its lack of a solid product strategy. Gartner recommends Samsung to follow an ecosystem approach like Apple. But the complete picture will come out in one or two quarters from now as the iPhone 6 sales come to normal.

The battle of payment systems is heating up. After Apple Pay, a number of tech giants have landed the payments domain.

Android Pay will open many domains for the payment industry but with a lot of security threats. Android has been a victim of a plethora of hack attacks because of its open source nature. The external hard drives which could be effected are from famous companies like Seagate, Western Digital, Samsung.

Kaspersky lab blog post said that this sophisticated attack targeted countries like Russia, China, Afghanistan, India and Pakistan. The report also claimed that the encryption techniques used by the Equation group had a striking similarity with NSA techniques that were leaked in some documents in 2013.

The lethal firmware malware works in two-pronged fashion. As soon as it gets on the hard drive, it creates sectors and partitions in it which can only be accessed by secret API (application programming interface). Once the malware gets hold, any kind of formatting, partitioning, antivirus scans cannot remove it.

The source said that such kind of sophisticated malware is there in the books but this is the first time it has been practically seen with all its meticulous implementation.

Kaspersky says that most hard drive vendors use ATA commands that are publicly available. These commands and firmware architecture was exploited by the Equation group. The malware is named as ‘Equationdrug’ and ‘GrayFish’.

Xiaomi showcased an event in the US today and said that the company will launch an online store in the US later this year. Hugo Barra, the vice president of Xiaomi and the only man because of which the company went up in the software and hardware domain accepted that Xiaomi will have to go through a lot to challenge Apple on its turf.

Barra is the man behind Android. When He left Google and joined Xiaomi, which was almost nothing at that time (2013), experts were skeptical about the sensibility of Barra’s decision. But within 2 years, Barra’s experience, talent and skills made Xiaomi the juggernaut of cellphone sales in Asia. Phablets Defined

A phablet is a device that combines the note-taking ability of a tablet with the communication features of a smart phone. Phablets offer screens of 5″ or larger, which makes reading lengthy documents or watching movies easier. One example is the phablet from Samsung Galaxy Note. With mobile phone theft growing into a national epidemic – 1 in 3 robberies in the U.S. involve phones, per the Federal Communications Commission – cell phone manufacturers such as Apple and Samsung have suggested the introduction of a “kill” switch that would disable a stolen device. However, according to San Francisco District Attorney George Gascon, service providers including AT&T Inc., Verizon Wireless, US Cellular, Sprint. and T-Mobile ordered the removal of a pre-installed anti-theft software called Absolute LoJack, prior to shipment of Samsung’s phones earlier this year. Wireless carriers contend that the kill switch leave customers exposed to the risk of hackers shutting down users’ mobiles remotely.

The selling of stolen smartphones is becoming quite a lucrative business, particularly in larger urban areas such as San Francisco and Washington DC, where they account for 40%, or more, of total robberies. They are then sold on the streets for hundreds of dollars to a customer base that is only concerned with the savings realized against much higher in-store retail prices. In 2012, roughly 174 million mobile phones were sold in the United States alone, amounting to nearly $69 billion in sales. New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman recently cited a June study indicating that stolen phones cost consumers over $30 billion last year alone. Technology, lawmakers contend, is a simple fix to this growing trend. Chuck Wexler, executive director of the Police Executive Research Forum, points to sharp declines in automobile theft the past several years, due to increased use of technology to catch and deter thieves, as proof that technological solutions would likely have a great impact.

A technological solution, says Gascon, is cheaper than criminal solution because it saves taxpayers the expense of prosecuting and jailing would-be criminals . He adds, “We know that the technology can be developed to prevent this. This is more about social responsibility than economic gain.”

Apple is ok with competitors who try to design and innovate their way into legitimate competition with the iPhone and iPad.  What Apple is not ok with is when a competitor outright copies the look, feel, and UI of one of their devices.

The most blatant culprit so far seems to be Samsungs Galaxy Tab 10.1 Android tablet – Honeycomb Android OS I might add.

Today, Apple has gained a significant advantage in shutting down copycats when they were granted a preliminary injuction against Samsung’s Galaxy Tab 10.1.

The injunction against Samsung is applicable immediately in Germany, and if Apple gets its way in the courts, the ruling will be granted EU-wide which will dramatically hamper Samsung’s global sales of the 10.1″ Galaxy Tab.

According the complain filed by Apple, “Rather than innovate and develop its own technology and a unique Samsung style for its smart phone products and computer tablets, Samsung chose to copy Apple’s technology, user interface and innovative style in these infringing products.”

It’s hard enough for competitors to innovate on the Android OS platform to try and compete with Apple, but with Apple also shooting down competition in the courts worldwide, the field of competition is getting even harder.

Looks like Apple will be the dominate player in the smartphone and tablet marketspace for quite a long time to come.

There has been much debate about what Apple has in store for their next iPhone, with detailed information about the device being kept tightly under wraps.

As the usual June/July release date has been pushed back in time for the release of iOS 5 in September, this is one feature that can be taken for granted with most other things just being speculation.

There have been conflicting rumours of a larger screen and yet a smaller phone, and with the name of the device not yet confirmed to be the iPhone 5 or the iPhone 4S.

While some had suggested the name of the iPhone 4S in lieu of the fact that this next Apple phone might not mark a huge shift in design from the iPhone 4, there are now rumours floating about that there will in fact be two Apple phones released in September with the iPhone 5 being the main affair and a smaller iPhone 4S being the rumoured ‘iPhone Nano’.

The claim of two new Apple phones comes from an unlikely source, Chris Whitmore of Deutsche Bank, who claims that the smaller Apple phone will be released to try and capitalise on Nokia and BlackBerry’s falling market share in the lower end of the market.

These rumours have already been floating around for some time but considering the iPhone’s position as a premium priced status symbol it is unlikely that a scaled down iPhone will be as cheap as the more basic handsets.

In other news, Samsung has just dropped the price of its Galaxy SII with more rumours speculating that this is in preparation for a newer flagship handset.

Considering the popularity of the Galaxy SII (which has been the first phone in a year to knock the iPhone 4 from the number 1 spot of bestselling phones) this could indeed indicate that Samsung is preparing a new rival for the next iPhone.

Samsung has just invited “people” from the media to a Samsung Mobile event on November 8th at 6p.m. (unsure as of now where the event is being held). This media will be highlighted by Samsung Mobile announcing a new Android device. Exactly what Android device this will be, nobody knows. But my guess is that it will be a new Android tablet. After all, Android 3.0 Gingerbread is the latest Android OS designed for tablet devices. And these Android 3.0 tablets are suppose to be on the shelves by Christmas.

The Samsung Galaxy Tab is set to release in the UK on November 1st. However, what is still up in the air is when the Galaxy Tab will hit the US market. However, new rumors are out today speculating that Verizon may be releasing a Galaxy Tab Android tablet on November 1st, right along with their UK counterparts. Along with that rumors comes another stating that Sprint will release the Galaxy Tab on November 14th in the US. So regardless of who releases the Galaxy Tab Android tablet when, suffice it to say that we will more than likely see that it here in the US sometime next month (November).

Toshiba is on the verge of releasing a 3D TV that DOES NOT require viewers to wear those big, annoying 3D glasses. Samsung, Panasonic, Sony and Toshiba all have TV’s on the market that are 3D compatible, but they all require 3D glasses. The new Toshiba’s will be the first natural 3D TV of it’s kind. The new TV’s will go on sale in Japan in December, come in 20-inch and 12-inch models, and carry a price tag of ¥240,000 and ¥120,000, or $2,880 and $1,440, respectively.

Samsung has release an official review / demo video of the Galaxy Tab. The Galaxy Tab is expected to hit the shelves of AT&T, Sprint, and Verizon sometime in October. The price tag is also expected to be in the range of $200 – $300 and maybe even less with carrier subsidies. The Galaxy Tab is obviously shooting directly at the Apple iPad and the explosive market share the iPad has created for tablet devices.

Samsung is now looking to Google’s Android operating system to power a new lineup of web enabled TV’s.

In Seoul, Korea, Yoon Boo Keun, Samsung’s TV business executive, is quoted as saying that Samsung is currently “reviewing” the possibility of launching Android OS powered televisions.

Not making any commitment to solid dates or details, Yoon Boo Keun said “we will have to see.”

This is not the first time we’ve heard Samsung TV’s associated with Google Android. Back in April, the Korean Herald reported that a Samsung executive said the company might be developing a “Google TV” running Android.

Samsung is currently the top TV manufacturer in the United States with a 19.7 percent market share.

Other Google Android OS projects headed up by Samsung include the Galaxy S smartphones, the Samsung Fascinate, and the new Android based tablet called the Galaxy Tab.

MetroPCS to bring their 4G LTE network to Dallas and Las Vegas next month (September) according to a Samsung executive.

In a move that will compete directly with Sprint, pre-paid mobile phone provider MetroPCS has announced the arrival of their 4G LTE network.

According to a Samsung vice president Jaebeom Choi with systems research and development, MetroPCS will bring their LTE (4G) network online in Las Vegas and Dallas sometime in September.

There is now an official 4G war Dallas and Las Vegas between Sprint and MetroPCS.

Samsung Galaxy Tab may have sub-par screen resolution.

If the Samsung Galaxy Tab tablet releases with a screen resolution that is equivalent Samsung Galaxy S smart phone (480 x 800), it could mean “fail” literally from day one for Samsung. Nobody wants a tablet device that has the same screen resolution as the much smaller mobile phone.

These are just rumors at the moment, but the message is picking up some steam on the web here and here.

CrunchGear states that, “There’s a talk over at xdadevelopers that the tablet’s resolution is more like 600 x 1024. Those specs were found within the tablet’s firmware and seem a bit more likely. Considering the Tab is supposed to be a 7-inch screen, this resolution would put it on par with the 9.7-inch 1024 x 768 iPad.”

So I was installing the app on my iPhone from the Vonage Facebook page when I noticed something very interesting… check it out:

I know that a lot of the new Android tablets that are coming out will be enabled for the two way video and talk – take the Samsung Galaxy Tab for example.

But the iPad is not yet enabled for this, so is it possible that Vonage knows something that we don’t?

I know it only makes sense that Apple’s future iterations of the iPad have two way conferencing, but nothing official has been announced yet from Apple.

And now with Vonage saying they are already set with the Vonage Facebook for Mobile app for the iPad, this seems like a done deal – we are just waiting for the next generation of iPads to be released.

The image above has been confirmed that this is in fact a Samsung Galaxy Tab and more than likely this is a training seminar to teach the employees more about the new tablet device.

The Galaxy Tab is reported to have a 7″ touch display, WiFi, GPS enabled, and of course 3G.  But also you’ll get dual cameras (video chat / conference capable) and the latest version of Google’s Android OS (version 2.2 currently).

The expected release date is sometime “this quarter”.

HTC Glacier #4 on GLBenchmark Pro 1.1 charts

Engadget is reporting that the HTC Glacier data phone has re-emerged and is currently at the number four spot on the GLBenchmark Pro 1.1 charts, where only one variant of Samsung’s Galaxy S and a pair of Tegra 2 tablets managed to keep it from claiming the top spot. Milestone to Get Android 2.2

The European Milestone, which is very similar to the Verizon Droid, will be able to get the Froyo update (Android 2.2), as early as September 2010. The Milestone is also said to be getting Adobe Flash 10.1 [read more].

Verizon just announced they are giving away a free LG Accolade mobile phone with a new 2 yr activation.

This is a great idea from Verizon – give a way a free phone to build up customers on the mobile phone carrier side of business.

I’m of the opinion that Google will eventually start giving away, or subsidizing heavily, all Android powered phones. The reason, because the more people using Android handsets, the more people are browsing the mobile web and seeing ads within the Google network.

Samsung has come out strong with their lineup of Android powered mobile phones. The Samsung Vibrant on T-Mobile and the Samsung Captivate on AT&T are some of the best Android powered devices on the market.

T-Mobile is making an effort to “stand out” from the Android crowd by offering their Samsung Vibrant 4G with the movie Avatar fully loaded.

That’s right folks – get the Samsung Vibrant 4G from T-Mobile and you will have the full length Avatar movie pre-loaded onto your phone.

Pretty cool huh?

In the hyper competitive market of mobile phones, carriers are having to find ways to distinguish themselves amongst the competition. Carriers are having to sell the exact same device, so typically carrier brand and reputation is the deciding factor.

But now that high end data phones from Android powered devices are coming to multiple carriers, the wireless providers are needing to be more creative on how to get attention from the consumers.

Sprint is about to add to its list of 4G enabled devices come around August 20th. Already, Sprint has rolled out the HTC EVO 4G, and they are aggressively expanding their metro area coverage of 4G data speed.

Sprint is expected to add the Samsung Epic 4G to their line around August 20th.

The tweet above occurred yesterday around 2:30pm stating the Sprint Epic 4G will be arriving in a few weeks.

So looking at these two Twitter updates from @SamsungMobileUS and it seems safe to conclude that August 20th would be an appropriate release date for the Sprint Epic 4G.
