Typically, Justin Bieber steals the show both in Google search and in Twitter trends. But over the last month, nothing – not even Justin Bieber – could come close to comparing to the searches for the World Cup.

As you can see, the search phrase “justin bieber” has dominated the search engines over the past 30 days.

This reflects the changing dynamics and popularity of football (or soccer) both here in the US and throughout the world.

Internationally, search volume was highest in African countries like Botswana, Ethiopia, and Zimbabwe. Closer to home, users on the East Coast were the most interested in searching for World Cup related terms, particularly in Vermont, New York, and DC.

Beyond their general interest, searchers were also looking to buy hats, jerseys, flags, and other goods to show their support of their favorite teams, according to Google Retail.

The final round of The Open Championship (The British Open) starts today and you can watch the entire thing online via ESPN3.com. Watching The British Open live online is a great way to have The Open playing online while you are surfing around the web doing other things.

ESPN3.com has really evolved lately by providing live online sporting events.

A somewhat subdued match suddenly became chaotic in a two-minute span of the second half. Gerard Pique pulled down Paraguay’s Oscar Cardozo in the penalty area on a corner kick, earning a yellow card and giving Cardozo a penalty kick.

The 2010 World Cup is starting to get more interesting as each day passes. With finals now on the line, the competition is growing more intense with higher level of soccer being played.

Wow! What an exciting time in sports. Serena Williams just won the Wimbledon, the 2010 FIFA World Cup is starting to narrow down to the final, and starting today, July 3rd, we have the Tour de France kicking off.

Tour de France fans will get to see the riders embark on a 5.5-mile joy ride (officially called the prologue) in Rotterdam, Netherlands.

The first official stage of the race  starts tomorrow with a 138.9-mile ride from Rotterdam to Brussels, Belgium. Then, the riders will complete 20 more stages to wind up in Paris, France on July 25.

Lance Armstrong has said this will officially be his last Tour de France race and obviously, he is out to win it. Yeah, I know… we’ve heard that before right?

Lance Armstrong has won 7 straight Tour de France titles from 1999-2005.

According to Zimbio, Armstrong, 38, said of the challenge ahead of him (via Philly.com): “With my age, and the explosiveness of the other guys, my own struggles with the time trials in the last couple of years . . . we’ll have to be smart, to be a bit lucky, to play the team card a little bit.”

Brazil vs Netherlands 2010 – Netherlands Upsets Brazil 2-1

In one of the biggest upsets so far this year in the 2010 FIFA World Cup, Brazil went down in flames today by being eliminated by the Netherlands 2-1 on Friday.

Brazil took and early lead and all looked as expected coming out of the first half. But then in the second half, the Netherlands scored twice in shocking goals that shook the World Cup.

The Netherlands has not beaten Brazil in the world cup since all the back in 1974 – so needless to say, this upset sent shock waves throughout the soccer world.

Thousands of Brazilian fans are streaming away from a huge TV screen in downtown Sao Paulo. A carpet of yellow and green streamers litters the ground. They are in shock.

“Maybe we didn’t play typical, creative Brazilian football,” says office worker Felipe Soares.

“Better luck in 2014,” says government worker Rita Rocchiccioli. That’s the year the World Cup will be played in Brazil.

“The game was a big comedown from Brazil versus Chile,” says computer technician Wlamir Cruz. “Brazil’s second half play today was terrible.”

Soon, street sweepers will clear the streets of tin cans, food scraps and litter and Latin America’s biggest city will get back to business as usual.

Will The Netherlands Finally Win A World Cup

There is really only one problem with the fact that the Netherlands beat Brazil, and that is winning the 2010 World Cup.

It’s great that the Netherlands won, but now they need to step up to the plate and continue on with their success to bring home what matter most – a Wold Cup victory.

Otherwise, what does this victory really mean?

The USA came into the match with a full head of steam, ready to carry on with the momentum gained from the previous match they won in glorious fashion. However, Ghana stayed in the game and ended up with the win.

The USA team continued to fight to the end of the match – sending the ball into the middle as frequent as possible as the time continued to approach the end of the match.

The USA team was hoping for just one more miracle as time expired.

There is a lot to be proud of from the USA team. Amazing comebacks, silencing critics, and making it to the final 16 shows that the USA was a formidable competitor during the 2010 World Cup.

So the US needs to be proud of the USA team for fighting as hard as they did, and making it this far in the competition.

The USA is now in trouble during the extra time of the USA vs Ghana soccer match. The World Cup is watching perhaps one of the most exciting matches during the 2010 World Cup match.

The USA soccer teamed played Slovenia today in a match that was exciting to watch, while simultaneously frustrating from the USA side. A score late in the soccer match by the United States was taken away from the USA soccer team because of a controversial call from the referee. This goal by the USA would have put them up 3-2 against Slovenia and given the US team a “Win” instead of a “Tie”.

However, the call stood and USA soccer team ended the match against Slovenia in a 2-2 tie.

What’s interesting still about the USA vs Slovenia game is that even with a tie being the result, I think that the US soccer team is still doing amazingly well. Nobody expected the USA soccer team to go very far in the 2010 World Cup. However, with 2 games now behind the US, the fact that they’ve tied both games (and haven’t loss any) tells me that the US soccer team is doing far better than anyone expected.

Anything can happen in the FIFA World Cup and even though the USA soccer team is not expected to go very far, we could see things unfold very differently than expected.

There is more to the story of Spain losing to Switzerland today in 2010 World Cup’s first shocking upset of defeat. Spain faced an almost certain victory against the highly unfavored Swiss soccer team. However, one look at the score will tell you that the outcome didn’t quite work out the way Spain had intended.

Spain ended up losing to Switzerland 1 – 0 in what was again, the first major upset of the 2010 World Cup Games.

The deeper story here is one that does not paint pretty picture for Spain – in fact, it paints a very gloomy picture indeed.

2010 World Cup Continues

This morning at 7am EST, the 2010 World Cup continues with the first game of our day here in the United States anyway featuring the Netherlands vs Denmark.

I wrote a quick article about the Jacques Cousteau Google logo and someone almost immediately asked if he was still alive. The answer is “no” – Jacques Cousteau is no longer alive – he died June 25th, 1997 of hearth failure in Paris, France.

Anyway, I digress…

2010 World Cup Google Logo

Google has just recently – in fact, perhaps within the past 30 minutes or so – changed their Google logo from the Jacques Cousteau celebration to a 2010 World Cup Google Logo.

This would now be the 2nd Google logo of today.

The last time I saw Google change up their logo twice in one day was on day 2 of the 2010 Winter Olympics.

Google is now celebrating the 2010 World Cup that started today. The first game of the World Cup was between South Africa and Mexico which just ended in a tie 1-1.

Coming up first in the 2010 World Cup is Mexico vs South Africa. This showdown is already getting a lot of attention and conversation on the web, especially with the host company being on the field during for the opening game. South Africa has quickly become the center of attention throughout the world, and all eyes will be on this country for the next month or so.

ESPN will present comprehensive coverage of the 2010 FIFA World Cup June 11, through July 11, from 10 stadiums in nine cities across South Africa.  All 64 matches will be aired live and in high definition on ESPN, ESPN2 and ABC, and extensive coverage on ESPN360.com and ESPN Mobile TV.  In addition, 2010 FIFA World Cup studio programs, including prematch, halftime and postmatch segments, will be presented in high definition.

ESPN will air 44 FIFA World Cup matches from South Africa – the most ever for the network in one tournament.  ESPN2 will feature 10 matches.  ABC will broadcast 10, beginning with the U.S. Men’s National Team’s tournament opener vs. England on Saturday, June 12, at 2 p.m. ET in Rustenburg.  The tournament will conclude on ABC with the title match Sunday, July 11, at 1:30 p.m. ET from the Soccer City Stadium in Johannesburg.

With the 2010 World Cup being held in Johannesburg, South Africa, it only makes sense that people all over the world are wondering the same thing – what are the time differences from the games and where I live?

This is a great question since not everyone knows instinctively the difference in time between where you live and Johannesburg, South Africa.

So that’s why I’m going to give you a nice little cheat sheet to use so you can quickly decipher the actual start times of your favorite country and team.

The time zone differences represented below are based on that particular city and the city’s associated time zone.

For example, Los Angele is Pacific Time Zone and New York is Eastern Time Zone, etc…

So here you go, see if the list below helps you in figuring out the actual start times for your favorite 2010 World Cup country and team:

So find your closest city, or the city that represents your time zone, do a little bit of math and there ya’ go – you’ll have the actual start times for World Cup game you want to watch or follow.

The 2010 World Cup is upon us and people are already scouring the for start times, news, and information about their favorite country and team.

The United States soccer team is already getting a lot of attention in Google as people are searching for us vs england, us vs england start times, and other related keyword phrases.

According to the 2010 World Cup schedule, the United States doesn’t play their first game against England until Saturday, June 13th at 20:30 hrs Johannesburg time.

As a point of reference, New York is (-6) hours – that is, 6 hours behind the World Cup time zone.

So with the United States starting their game at 20:30hrs on Saturday, that would be 2:30pm EST (or 2:30pm in New York).

After Saturday’s game against England, the United States soccer team doesn’t play again until next Friday, June 18th when they will face Slovenia at 16:00 hrs – or 10am New York time.

After playing Slovenia on Friday, June 18th, the United States will play Algeria on Wednesday, June 23rd at 16:00 hrs – or 10am New York time.

Finally, the United States soccer team with face Algeria on Wednesday, June 23rd at 16:00 hrs – or 10am in New York.
