Having a default landing tab for your Facebook Fan Page is a great way to achieve 2 specific goals:
1) It’s a great way to “NOT” send traffic initially to your busy wall / news stream.
2) It’s a great way to invite people who are not yet fans of your Facebook Fan Page to click the “Become A Fan” button and join your page.
First, let me explain how to get to, and set, your default landing tab. This is not really going to be useful for anyone unless you’ve set up a custom landing page within their Facebook Fan Page. But, let me show you how anyway…
Click “edit page” directly under your Fan Page profile picture > go to “wall settings” and click the small pencil icon to the right > once you’ve click the small pencil, click the word “edit” > now you should be looking at your “wall settings” – the “default landing tab for everyone else” is the second drop down menu from the top > click that, and you’ll see a list of your tabs within your fan page drop down – whatever you select here will be the tab that your “non-fans” hit first.
As I said though, it would help to have a custom page / landing tab in place before using this feature.
Using Your Default Landing Tab For Everyone Else
First, setting a custom landing tab for everyone else is basically saying “setting a custom landing tab for non-fans”. When you set this tab, you are specifying where “non-fans” land first. And then those who are already fans of your page will always hit the wall tab first – there is no changing this for your current fans.
Setting a custom landing tab for everyone else is a great way to have non-fans avoid the massive content and conversations that could be going on at your Fan Page wall. Sometimes, your wall tab (or news stream) on your page can have a lot of activity and when someone who is not a fan lands there, they could easily become distracted from “Becoming A Fan”.
Plus, you could have a great marketing message, photos, videos, etc… built upon a custom landing tab that would be beneficial for your visitors to see first, before engaging in the content on your wall tab.
Here’s a great example by a custom landing tab being used by the Atlantis Resort
As you can see, this “default landing tab for everyone else” is only set for those who are “not fans”. Plus, it shows great use of the arrow pointing up to become a fan, along with other great content such as information, photos, and videos – all to the benefit of promoting the resort.
Setting a custom landing tab is also a great way to increase the “visitors to fans” conversion ratio.
Every Facebook Fan Page goal is to increase the number of fans – so everything you can do to increase fans helps!
Setting a custom landing tab for non-fans to hit first, before doing anything else, can dramatically increase that conversion rate.
Sometimes as simple as setting an image with a call to action element, an arrow pointing up to the “Become A Fan” button with some supporting text is all it takes to dramatically increase your fans.
The Take A Way
Setting a custom landing tab for everyone else is same thing as setting a custom landing tab for those who are not yet fans of your page.
Using a default landing tab is a great way to show non-fans supporting information and content associated with your business, products, or services.
Sending non-fans to a default landing tab is also a very effective way to increase fans to your page. Implementing a simple image with an arrow pointing up to your “Become A Fan” button can dramatically increase the fans on your Facebook Fan Page.
