In what is truly a bizarre story, the Mayor of Topeka, Kansas is fighting for his city to picked as a testing ground for Google super fast Internet connection. And the strategy to get Google’s attention, the Mayor announced on Monday that his city will be known as “Google” — Google, Kansas, for a period of 1 month.
According to CNN, the Mayor is quoted as saying, “it’s just fun. We’re having a good time of it,” he said of the unofficial name change, which will last through the end of March. “There’s a lot of good things that are going on in our city.”
The unusual move comes as several U.S. cities elbow for a spot in Google’s new “Fiber for Communities” program. The Web giant is going to install new Internet connections in unannounced locations, giving those communities Internet speeds 100 times faster than those elsewhere, with data transfer rates faster than 1 gigabit per second.
What do you think?
Mayors are always trying to find ways to help the citizens of their communities. And I think this is definitely a creative way to get peoples attention. It’s already working obviously – I’m writing about it, and I got the story from CNN.
So do you think the Google super fast Internet connection is worth it to actually rename your city for entire month?
