Social Media: Avoiding the Dark Side

Truth be known, it seems the more things change, the more things remain the same.  Back in 1995, I can remember all my techie friends prognosticating how wonderful the future will become as the Internet begins to reach its potential.  With the advent of Social Media, many of those promises have come to fruition.  But the enthusiasm for the Internet was heavily peppered with security concerns then.  Today, people seem to readily accept that your private information is accessible at some or all levels, so why bother worrying about security?

The problem as I see it, human nature has not progressed as much as technology.  We still have virus writers, con-artists, scammers, identity thieves, child molesters, ad. naseum walking amongst us, hiding in the digital shadows waiting to rip you off or worse.  While I don’t advocate cutting connections or communications, I do recommend taking steps to lose any false sense of security you may have developed regarding your personal information due to the anonymity of the internet.

ConsumerReports.org has a great article posted on Yahoo Finance, 7 Things to Stop Doing Now on Facebook , for more information.

Remember Yoda’s wise words:  “Yes, a Jedi’s strength flows from the Force. But beware of the dark side. Anger, fear, aggression; the dark side of the Force are they. Easily they flow, quick to join you in a fight. If once you start down the dark path, forever will it dominate your destiny, consume you it will, as it did Obi-Wan’s apprentice.”
