BP Gulf Oil Spill Update: Oil has hit Fort WAlton Beach Florida

There are reports starting to come in that are claiming that oil from the busted BP oil pipe in the Gulf of Mexico is just now starting to hit Fort Walton Beach, Florida.

Satellite imagery has confirmed as early as the beginning of this week that large sheens of oil were approaching the beaches of Florida. And it’s really been a guessing game for the residents of Florida as to when exactly the oil will start hitting the beaches.

As I said, reports are just now starting to come in that are saying that oil – as of tonight, Saturday, June 5th – oil is starting to hit the beaches of Fort Walton Beach, Florida.

Oil hitting the beaches of Florida is going to raise the volume of public out cry from this massive oil disaster. The tourism industry in Florida is going to be great affected by the oil hitting the beaches. Hotels will go unfilled, along with restaurants remaining empty and the lack of traffic in all the secondary store along Florida’s coast line – they will be all be affected by this oil disaster.

What do you think about oil now hitting Fort Walton Beach, Florida?

So what are you thinking now about the oil spill with this new report of oil starting to hit the beaches of Florida?

  • Blah Blah Blah. Deal with it. You wanted the oil and didn't care how they got it. Now that it is spilled it is a big deal..

    • this is not true! The people of Gulf CoastFl fought tooth and nail to block drilling, and succeded. Then Jeb Bush turned over the dicission, and public out cry stopped him is his tracks.
The oil we get from drilling is a drop in the bucket of what we need, so I say, cabon tax, stop the deep water drilling, and put folks to work cleaning up the mess, and installing alternitives, like solar in the south! Until americans are paying what the rest of the world pays for gas, this will only continue.

      • Great idea, we can pay $10/gallon for gas and cripple our already miserable economy. Do some research on the economics of your foolish plan before you start bellowing your liberal crap.

          • Seriously?

Are you also willing to pay $20 for a gallon of milk? How about $30 for a hamburger or an additional $10-$15 a pound for meat. What about $10 for a head of lettuce? Just exactly how do you think these goods get to your local store? Magic? No. Trucks. What do they need to move? Diesel. What do you think lubricates the engines, transmissions and other moving parts? Oil.

What do you think that all the tractors and harvesters need to run that enable you to enjoy a $1 loaf of bread? Yea, diesel. Are you willing to pay $10 for your bread, hamburger buns and hot dog buns too?

And NO, bio-diesel is NOT economically feasible at this time. It may be eventually but not within the next decade at minimum.

And before you start spewing about hybrid cars and the like, where do you think 90% of the plastics and resins come from to manufacture these "green" vehicles? Yea, crude oil. What to you think the mining and smelting equipment burn to dig up the lithium, platinum, titanium and aluminum that is required to manufacture the batteries in electric cars? Yep, diesel.

How about the clothes you are wearing? Are you willing to also double or triple their price? Unless they are 100% cotton, its a high probability that they are made from polymers like nylon, rayon, dacron or similar synthetics. All derived from crude oil as are most thermoplastics and synthetic polymers.

You better think good and hard about your $10 gas theory and how REALLY willing you are to accept it. Perhaps knowing where that potato chip comes from and how it was grown, harvested and transported to get to you might help you understand just exactly how disastrous your $10 gas will really be to the entire economy and the national food supply.

I grew up in Ft Walton so I know very well what this disaster means to the local economy. It will kill many businesses that wouldn't otherwise have folded. There is nothing you can do about that at this point. The world/national economy has already taken a toll on tourism and that is the lifeblood of the area. There is only so much they can sap from the economic benefit of Eglin and Hurlburt fields. The rest of the economy depends on tourism and when tourism is hurt, the local economy is also hurt.

Unfortunately, this disaster only accelerates the demise of an already unstable economy in the area. That said, you also need to look at the whole country and the economic disaster on a national scale that extreme fuel prices would mean. You think tourists are going to pay double the hotel rates, $10 a gallon gas, $10 hamburgers, double the rate for half day fishing charters, and still make the same as they do at their jobs? Not. What do you think will happen to plane tickets when the airlines start having to pay 3x to 5x what they currently do for aircraft fuel (kerosene for the larger jets and AV gas for the commuter turbo props). Yea, prices go up. Every dollar a tourist has to pay on a plane ticket is a dollar LESS they spend in Ft Walton. The higher the prices, the less likely they will come at all.

The higher fuel costs would also be an economic disaster in northern states (where I currently live) where fuel oil and natural gas are still a major portion of our heating bills. This would also decimate the manufacturing areas of the country as well since they rely on reasonable fuel prices to move raw materials as well as for use in smelters, milling operations and the like. You think everything is made in China now, just wait until your acceptable $10 gas actually happens.

So many people (Obama included) simply don't understand how fragile the economy really is. It literally is a house of cards. One little mistake and it all comes down. One of those mistakes would be condoning high fuel prices. Fuel prices are one of the cards on the bottom row, alter it much and you better be prepared for the 1930's and the dust bowl days of the mid west. It will mean a national disaster of epic proportions.

      • Agree with John Gates below. First off... while we're on the topic of "resources," one should probably think about using the resources we already have... such as spell check. Sorry... it's just hard to takes one's statements seriously when they mispelled multiple words in their argument. Lastly, in addition to what John said, I lived in California for 3 years and they are VERY much advocates for solar power. Panels are not cheap... in fact, many of my friends paid about $40,000 for installation on their houses. I also lived in Germany and travelled around Europe. They pay the equivalent of about $2-4 per Liter... I'll leave you to do the math on that one. I'd suggest doing some homework before you choose to present your "facts." There's a whole lot more to rambling about these solutions that "seem so easy." If it was as easy as you try and make it, based on what you said... I hope you stick to it and are part of the group you said should be "put to work cleaning up the mess."

        • I think you need to follow your own advice. It should be ( take someone seriously not takes...... Ha ! Ha !)

          • And you should learn the use of "quotation marks" instead of parentheses. Simple typos and a couple misspelled words, I can forgive... it happens. Multiple misspelled words... not so much. Apparently, I'm not the only one that noticed it.

          • Wow! Were we discussing the mess in the Gulf or whether someone uses proper grammer and punctuations?.... We need oil, .....we need alternative fuel options,..... we need to clean up the gulf,..... we need to agree to dissagree. Not any one person has the answers. I do not want to pay higher prices for gas or anything else for that matter. I do want everyone to work together to fix the oil spill problem........and, by the way if anyone is reading this, I don't give a rats rear end if I misspelled any thing or used proper grammer . STOP NITPICKING!!!!!

      • Please learn to spell! Drop in the bucket, really? Have you seen what is gushing out of there? Dont tell me... you ride bikes and not in cars? Liberals, ughhhh!

    • I agree that we should look for alternative fuels..however this is a horrible environmental disasters especially affecting everyone who lives in that region of the U.S.A. as well as the rest of us....even if you don't drive and peddle a bike!! think of all of the marine and wildlife affected..they didn't want or care or care how we got the oil... IT IS A BIG DEAL!!! you are an ASS!!!

    • fred.i dont know WHERE your from but its obv not around here...so keep your stupid a*s comments to yourself. this is a tragic thing happenning and if your not willing to give any support..then shut it! ASSHOLE.

    • With a name like "Fred Baker" how could you not be a moron. The people of the gulf coast have been fighting for years to keep the drilling away from the coast. It's not them who wanted the oil, it was the rest of the country who wanted it and didn't care how they got it. Now the people of the gulf get to suffer another disaster and, of course, they will have to clean it up and take the consequences of YOUR greed.

    • You my friend, are an a*s for thinking that way. Our ecosystem is going to turn to crap and our industry is going to do the same! If I could only see you in person.......SHAME ON YOU!!!!!!!!!!!

    • We did not ask for this ... Texas and Louisiana did But Florida said no to off shore drilling !!

  • Are you kidding me that stuff ill kill ya .What should happen all Bp employees especially management roll ur sleeves up an start scoopin, particularly the globs with your dispersant.

  • It saddens me that America #1 affordable vacation spot in the United States is being spoiled by this tragedy. The effects will not be short lived in the Gulf Coast areas. Americans will always work on the edge to attempt to harness the powers of the universe and there will continue to be tragedies throughout the learning curve. If BP is playing by the rules, an accident happened and they compensate for mistakes then that is all that can be expected, however, if there is a cover up or miscalculation in their pushing the limits of known boundaries then someone made a big mistake and those people might deserve to be named as criminals.
As far as the Government stopping 50 thousand gallons a day from an oil well 5000 feet underwater, we have to rely on the experts in this field. That ain't gonna be anybody on Capital Hill, I guarantee.

  • You just a cry baby about the bp oil spill. It's not gotten that far and it's not as bad as the press is saying it is. It's just a jealous rage something you aren't,

    • this guy must be the biggest dumbass to walk the face of the planet 50,000 gallons or more a day yeah thats not to much and how long has it been going on you do the math dont strain too hard though, ask a fifth grader to help you out.

  • Every person with a boat needs to be out offshore skimming, scooping or what ever it takes to STOP this oil from further advance. What a super job the authorities have done so far! If one boat can skim or scoop 5 gallons, then 1,000 boats will prevent 5,000 gallons of oil from further spreading and devastation. Note what BP is saying in reference to restoring the beaches to their original state. This is an easily achievable task. What they will never be able to restore is the shrimp, oysters and fishery that may never return in anyone's lifetime. We can't depend on any government entity any longer. Do you really think Obama cares about the fishing, recreation and jobs the Gulf of Mexico provides? NO, the more people that loose their job and are dependant on govt. handouts the better for Obama. Lets get out there and STOP THE OIL and save our way of life.

    • Our ocean is completely destroyed! Marine life is dieing every minute of every hour. Please put your Obama hate and political games aside and FOCUS on the problem at hand. Republican, democrat, who cares? How about American? How about compassion, humanity, and team work? Quit looking for a political angle and search for a solution to this disaster!

      • I will have to say you are correct. There should not be any political angle on the solution to stopping this oil from further devastation. I may have become cynical given all the political and big business corruption which has come to light in the past few years. The seemingly political spin on everything. The point I am trying to make is that it is apparent that the number of vessels that are currently working is not enough. President Obama, ORDER Bp, the Coast Guard or who ever to double or triple the current force and really throw everything we possibly can at this now. We will worry about the cost later. Yep, I said that. WE will worry about the cost later. The gulf is priceless. No amount of money or time will fully restore or make it like it never happened. This is OUR ocean and as a gulf coast resident I look at this as like a war. We are fighting something that could destroy us.

    • many have tried, the coast guard and BP stop them. The dispercent has toxic fumes.

    • You know if there was team work between all the fishing industries, all the folks in the oil industries, all the wild life folks this mess would might be well on it's way to being cleaned up. Team Work between all experts in these areas are in need. Just like Armegedon! Think about it.

  • It's all fun and games until oil hits Florida... No one really gave a sh*t about Louisiana, as oil has destroyed our coast for the last month. Now, it gets a LOT more attention, because it's washing up on more "important" areas. Whatever.. I hope that it goes all the way up the eastern seaboard.. Oil companies have destroyed our state for 60 years, and everyone else benefits from our state's rich assets. Nothing new these days..

    • I care about Louisiana and I believe everybody else cares as deeply as I do. This has been a very devastating event to the coast there. More so than any hurricane. Louisiana, with it's vast tributaries and marsh is likely one of the most important streatches of coast in the entire gulf. Louisiana gives widespread life to the gulf. We are all in this together. Death does not recognize state lines. The recent or more attention is a good thing. We are all fed up and it is starting to show more. It is past time that more could be done on CONTAINING the oil spread. The work at the well head in 5000 ft. of water is a daunting technical challenge. Top side containment of the oil is nothing new.

  • The perfect oil solution.....Have every human in the world commit suicide. Seeing how every person in the world is responsible (yes you goober sitting behind the pc, where do you think the plastic that computer is made comes from?) That's right murderers, OIL. I am to blame, you are to blame, we all are to blame. Every spill, leak all over the world. I hate this species i have been born unto. were not even mammals......more like a virus or cancer.

  • I heard on Fox news that this could go on until new year....what a disaster....

  • Having served in the US Navy for 8 years, I can tell you that the carrier strike groups are a bit busy right now. One is protecting our interests in the Indian Ocean, three are in the Persian Gulf, one has been stationed off the coast of Korea (or have you been asleep the past few weeks regarding that crisis?), one is operating in the Atlantic. And two carriers are being overhauled. What's that leave out of the eleven? Might you grant a little time for these service men and women with their families?
