Facebook Memology: Status Update Trends for 2010 Released

What Google calls “trends”, Facebook calls “memology”.

Facebook memology refers to the study of how “memes,” or new ideas and trends, are spreading on Facebook (source).

Who knew…?

Regardless of whether we’re talking about Google, Twitter, and yes… now Facebook, when it comes the web, the most significant element is the use of keyword phrases.

So in proper web fashion, Facebook has just released the most popular keyword phrases of 2010, or the 2010 Facebook memology trends.

The list is comprised of keyword phrases found within Facebook status updates that had the largest increase in both use and volume in 2010 versus 2009.

One surprise on the Facebook trend list is the use of “HMU”.

Apparently, Facebook users in mass have been using “HMU” as a way to tell others to “hit me up”.

The use of “HMU” started to decline however in 2010 when the school year in the United States kicked back into action.

Here’s the Facebook Trend List of 2010 released by Facebook:
