Facebook is getting in sync with the times by changing their “hide all” feature to “unfollow”. The button will work the same way so you can hide annoying or unwanted updates in your feed by clicking the arrow in the upper right hand corner of the post. This makes it so you don’t have to un-friend someone to have them out of your feed, you can just unfollow their Facebook posts.

“The goal of this change is to help people curate their News Feed and see more of the content that they care about,” a Facebook spokesperson wrote in a statement given to Mashable.

I’m surprised I didn’t catch this earlier, and if someone from Mashable is reading this they are probably laughing at me. But I just noticed that Mashable.com now has a PR8 (PageRank of 8).

What’s PageRank you ask? According to the meta data of the PageRank button on the Google toolbar, PageRank is “Google’s view of the importance of this page.”

For as long as I can remember, Mashable.com carried a PR7. And then when I looked this morning, I noticed the PR8.

I haven’t really noticed the PR ranking of Mashable so much lately because I hardly ever use Firefox as a web browser. I’ve pretty much converted whole heartily over to Chrome. And why wouldn’t I – I can open and close Chrome about 5 times before Firefox will load once.

So congrats to Mashable.com for the PR8. Here’s a list of other PR8 sites that Mashable has now joined the ranks of:

HuffingtonPost.com

TechCrunch.com

Engadget.com

Technorati.com

Gawker.com

Gizmodo.com

TheDailyBeast.com

BoingBoing.net

CNN’s Political Ticker

NYTimes Krugman Blog

Google Blog

There’s probably a lot more (maybe, maybe not…) sites that have a PR8, but this is a list I grabbed by doing a great search through Technorati’s Top 100 blog list.

The growth rate of Facebook is nothing less than extraordinary (to say the least). Back in March 2010, it was reported that Facebook actually generated more page views than Google. Wow – never thought I’d hear something like that!

Here’s a chart:

And on July 21st, Facebook announced they reached the 500 million user mark – another phenomenal achievement.

Well to add another feather in the Facebook cap, today it has been announced that Facebook is now the second largest video site in the United States, according to ComScore. But don’t think that Facebook is going to trump Google (YouTube and Google Videos) anytime soon. While Facebook is second with 243,210 viewing sessions in the month of August, Google (which includes both YouTube and Google Videos) came in at 1,903,240.

Here’s the chart showing how video sites rank:

You might not want to mouseover any links on Twitter until a major bug / security flaw gets resolved. This bug is particularly bad because all you have to do is mouseover a link and potentially third party sites and pop ups can open. The bug is powered by a JavaScript function called onMouseOver and launches a link when the mouse passes over that link. A lot of text link ads work that way in many popular sites. But the fact that this has hit Twitter shows us, once again, that Twitter is definitely susceptible to security attacks.

There is no word yet from Twitter on the status of this bug.

News broke yesterday that the ‘Craigslist Killer’ had died.

The ‘Craigslist Killer’, or Philip Markoff, was reportedly found dead in his jail cell yesterday one day after what would have been his first wedding anniversary.

The reports are that he killed himself.

Philip Markoff was indicted on charges of murder and armed robbery in 2009. He claimed innocence of all the charges, but there’s a mountain of evidence that he was the “Craigslist killer” who met with and robbed at least three women via Craigslist and murdered one.

Markoff has been on suicide watch previously, and for some reason this time, he was left alone in a prison cell.

His fiancée at the time of his indictment stood strong in his defense saying that he would never do such things – “he was a beautiful man inside and out”.

However, after multiple visits to the prison his fiancée decided to break it off.

And here we are with Philip Markoff killing himself one day after what would have been their first year anniversary.

Coincidence – I think not…

How about this year (2010), Craigslist is on track to earn $36 million from their “Adult Services” section – formerly known as “Erotic Services”.

Simply put, this is prostitution.

$36 million is roughly 30% of the $99 million in profits that Craigslist will earn in 2010.

The “Erotic Services” section used to be a free classified listing service. But due to public pressure and outrage, Craigslist switched the name to “Adult Services” and now charges $10 per ad posting. This move by Craigslist, although designed to appease the “public”, has turned out to be extremely profitable for the classified website.

It is estimated that Craigslist will earn $88 to $99 million on profits in 2010, with a profit margin to revenue of over 80%. It is also estimated that per employee, Craigslist generates more than $4 million in revenue and profits of $2.9 million to $3.2 million.

The other $90 million or so is earned through recruitment advertising – basically job listings from corporations.

Craigslist stands to take home anywhere from $88 to $99 million in profit, which means the company could see nearly 80% of revenue as profits. Plus, AIM Group founder Peter M. Zollman purports that, “Per employee, it generates more than $4 million in revenue and profits of $2.9 million to $3.2 million.”

According to a Netflix job board posting, a future Nexflix Android app is in the making. According to the job posting, “Netflix is looking for a great engineer to help us build Instant Streaming client implementations on Android devices.” Netflix already has an iPhone app but it is less than desirable in the marketplace. The primary complaint right now is the Netflix app drains the battery too quickly.

According to Mashable, the Netflix job posting also mentions “experience with digital rights management (DRM) and “Experience with other mobile application platforms (e.g. iPhone/iPad).”

I think the iPad is primed for a highly efficient Netflix app that streams movies instantly. The iPhone, and any other Android type phone, may be challenged to pick up wide spread use because the screens are too small. But with the iPads 9.7 inch display, and potentially even HD, viewing will be much more pleasurable.

So what do you think about Netflix looking to build high end apps to stream movies over Android and iPhone / iPad devices?

Will you be watching Netflix movies on these devices?

1) Dell Streak will get Android 2.2 (Froyo) OS later this year (2010)

2) The Streak will be released initially with Android 1.6 with an over the air update to 2.2

3) The Dell Streak, according to Dell, is “the most successful pre-sale Dell hasever offered.”

4) The price tag for the Dell Streak is $500

5) The Dell Streak will run exclusively on AT&T’s 3G data network (sorry T-Mobile)

And let’s see…

Oh yeah, one other point to make.

AT&T already has an exclusive 3G data client. You may have heard of them… Apple’s iPad!

Seems that AT&T’s 3G network has a pretty good reputation and future ahead of itself.

This is huge, literally! The Motorola Droid X with it’s 4.3 inch touch screen display is fixin’ to hit Verizon stores tomorrow like a tidal wave.

Unlike the Droid Incredible release that has plagued Verizon with supply shortages, Verizon doesn’t plan on making the same mistake with the Motorola Droid X. In fact, it’s been said that is you order a Droid Incredible today, you won’t receive it until this time next month.

But that’s not the case with the Motorola Droid X that is set to be released by Verizon tomorrow. PC World is reporting that:

“Verizon isn’t about to let the same thing happen to its highly anticipated Droid X. Checks by several blogs indicated average stocks of between 50 and 100 units. While not a lot, it certainly means in most cases if you’re there early, you’ll be taking home the phone that day. Boy Genius Report added that the company also has backup stock in its warehouse, so stores would be able to replenish the ones they sell.”

The Droid X will be powered by the Android 2.1 OS with an update to Android 2.2 and Adobe Flash Player 10.1 coming via an over-the-air update later this summer, according to Mashable.

So who’s planning on showing up tomorrow at Verizon to pick up the huge Motorola Droid X?

Google I/O Event – Live Keynotes, Blogging From Google I/O

First of all, let me start out by saying that if you showed up for the Google I/O event in San Francisco, you got a free android device. Man, that makes really consider showing up at next year’s Google I/O event.

Next, let me say that ZDNet had awesome live blogging coverage of the Google I/O event. You can check out ZDNet’s live blogging of Google I/O here.

The Google I/O even is an annual event that Google holds in San Francisco and is tailored to the engineering and developer’s world of applications, design, and software development. Google has a chance, at Google I/O, to share with the rest of the world, and the media that is present, what are some of the things that Google has been working on and some new technologies that are coming up.

Google I/O, this year, was made up mostly of people from other countries – which I thought was rather strange since the Google I/O conference is held here in the United States.

Here are some Google I/O keynote highlights from Mashable:

Google I/O Keynote: Live Notes

– VP of Engineering Vic Gundotra is addressing the crowd with some housekeeping notes and an introduction to Google I/O

– HTML5 has gained momentum

– Now Vic is asking: “How can we make the web faster?”

– Now Sundar Pichai, VP of Product Management, has taken the stage. He is discussing he evolution of desktop applications.

– Web apps are becoming more powerful due to HTML5. Google’s goal is to move more apps from the desktop to the web.

– Now they are doing a demo of HTML5 and Gmail in Chrome to show off its power.

– New demos: MugTug, an image/photo editing software, and Clicker.com. The focus is on the power of Chrome and HTML5

– Clicker is now showing off Clicker.tv, a new version of Clicker built for the TV. It’s a lot like YouTube XL.

And here’s a Google I/O video:

Q: My site’s PageRank has gone up / gone down / not changed in months

A: Don’t worry. In fact, don’t bother thinking about it. We only update the PageRank displayed in Google Toolbar a few times a year; this is our respectful hint for you to worry less about PageRank, which is just one of over 200 signals that can affect how your site is crawled, indexed and ranked. PageRank is an easy metric to focus on, but just because it’s easy doesn’t mean it’s useful for you as a site owner. If you’re looking for metrics, we’d encourage you to check out Analytics, think about conversion rates, ROI (return on investment), relevancy, or other metrics that actually correlate to meaningful gains for your website or business.

I definitely understand why people feel that PageRank is not important, however of the “over 200” signals Google uses to determine authority, PageRank is one that is equally made up of hundreds of variables that are all represent authority – and it happens to represent a variable that is visible to us all.

There is, without question, a direct correlation between a site’s authority and ranking and their PageRank. For example, HuffingtonPost.com is a PR8 and #1 in Technorati’s 100. Mashable is a PR7 and typically #3 in Technorati 100 and dominates top rankings in Google search results for a myriad of high traffic keywords.

I believe Google says “don’t worry about PageRank” as a position and strategy to fight spammy, artificial back linking. No sooner does Google say “Hey guys, PageRank means everything to a site” and instantly the spam cess pool grows.

The web is a wonderful thing indeed! But don’t you hate it when you are surfing the internet from your iPhone or iPad, read that great email or Facebook message, and then you wish you could print it right then and there?

Printing with Google Cloud Print

The world is changing, and the web is changing along with it. Printing use to require drivers and complex installs on your PC’s. Most of the time, these drivers need to be compatible with your particular operating system (XP, Windows 2000, Vista, etc…)

Your struggles with printing while on the move (being mobile) might just be solved with Google Cloud Print!

Google is working on a Google Cloud Print with the objective of allowing you to enable “any application (web, desktop, or mobile) on any device to print to any printer.”

According to Mashable, “Google Cloud Print” is still in early days of development, but Google made the code and documentation public as part of the Chromium and Chromium OS projects. The documentation reveals how Google plans to solve some of the issues it’ll inevitably face, such as making Cloud Print work with legacy printers.

Here’s more from the Google Code Lab that broke the news yesterday:

“The ideal experience is for your printer to have native support for connecting to cloud print services. Under this model, the printer has no need for a PC connection of any kind or for a print driver. The printer is simply registered with one or more cloud print services and awaits print jobs. Cloud-aware printers don’t exist yet, but one of our main goals in publishing this information at an early stage is to begin engaging industry leaders and the community in developing cloud-aware printers and the necessary open protocols for these printers to communicate with cloud print services.”

“We want users to be able to print to legacy printers via Google Cloud Print. This is accomplished through the use of a proxy, a small piece of software that sits on a PC where the printer is installed. The proxy takes care of registering the printer with Google Cloud Print and awaiting print jobs from the service. When a job arrives, it submits the print job to the printer using the PC operating system’s native print stack and sends job status back to the printer.”

The ubiquitous world in which we live.

The world is becoming more ubiquitous, meaning we are becoming more mobile, less confined to location, and on the move while remaining constantly connected.

It only makes sense then that there would be a printing solution that is also ubiquitous – and Google Cloud Print sounds like it is definitely a step in the right direction.

When Google Buzz first launched, wide-spread panic ensued!

Upon signing into Gmail for the first time, and launching Google Buzz, users were instantly following and being followed by contacts. This happened all without the direct consent of the users.

The result of this Google Buzz disaster was a week of frantic privacy policy updates from Google in reaction to customer complaints – if you will.

Today, Google is set to roll out Google Buzz privacy reset.

Upon opening up Google Buzz, Google will ask users to confirm (or change) their Buzz settings. This rollout will be gradual, so don’t be surprised if you don’t see it yet. Eventually, ever Google Buzz user will prompted to change (or confirm) their Buzz settings. Again, this will occur when you are have logged into Gmail and then clicked the Buzz tab.

According to Mashable, the Google Buzz privacy reset page will look something like this:

Has anyone received the Google Buzz privacy reset yet?

If so, what did you have to do, confirm, etc…?

Mashable is reporting that the iPads are sold out. The demand for the iPad was, obviously, much higher than expected and Apple was not prepared for the demand. So as a result, there is now a shortage of iPads.

This might be a good time, if you were planning on competing with the iPad with your very own touch pad product, to get your product launched and into the market place. Short demand means people are going to be looking to buy, perhaps even if it’s not an iPad.

Here’s more from Mashable:

If you’re looking to pre-order an iPad today, you’ll notice that shipping dates have been pushed back to April 12th. What’s more, Apple has removed the option to pick up your iPad in-store. It appears Apple simply can’t supply the demand for the first week of iPads, writes 9to5Mac, suggesting high demand for the device.

On April 3rd, next Saturday, you’ll be able to go into an Apple store and buy an iPad. But you’ll have to remember that the devices will be sold on a first come first serve basis.

Mashable has a new iPhone that is awesome, but some people are stuck wondering how turn off (or on) the push notifications.

When it comes to blogs, Mashable is ranked in the #1 spot on my list. I love the frequent content updating and contributors are all in the top league of their niche area of expertise. That why I was excited when Mashable released their new Mashable iPhone app (opens iTunes).

However, the Mashable iPhone app comes with a cool push notification system that will send… well… notifications to your iPhone each time Mashable updates with a new article – which is all the time!

Some people don’t want the push notification and I’ve seen the question asked a few times on their Facebook Fan Page.

So I’m going to show you how to turn off / on the Mashable iPhone App push notification:

Click the “Settings” on your iPhone’s home screen.

When the next screen opens, you should see “Notifications” in the 3rd from the top position.

Go ahead and click the “Notifications” link.

You should now see the Mashable iPhone App listed

Go ahead and click the Mashable app

Now select what options you do, or don’t want turned on

It’s the “Alerts” function that sends the push notifications to the home screen of your iPhone. So just tab the option to Off to turn off the push notifications.

And that’s it…

Mashable’s Network of Facebook Fan Pages

My favorite blog in the world, Mashable, has taken their Facebook Fan Page presence to a whole new level. They’ve created a Facebook Fan Page for each of their popular categories on their blog. And the Fan Page network seems to be growing quite nicely with already a hundred of so fans per page.

An idea I have for Mashable’s Fan Page navigation

The way Mashable has set up navigation to and from each of the Pages is by “favoriting” each of the other pages.

However, the problem is that only 6 of the 8 Fan Pages show in their “Favorite” section.

One idea to make it easy to promote each of the other 7 pages, and to make it easy for people to navigate to the other pages, is to create a custom navigation bar utilizing the Facebook FBML app.

An Example of a Facebook Fan Page Navigation Bar

Heres’ an example of what I’m talking about – check out the navigation bar I created for our church that has 10 Facebook Fan Pages.

See the navigation bar in action by visiting the main Facebook Fan Page here,

You will also notice when you are on a specific page within the network, the banner in the navigation bar is dark blue. This helps people know what page they are on at all times within the network.

Making A Website out of Facebook Fan Pages

I love what Mashable has done by creating multiple Facebook Fan Pages!

Creating a custom navigation bar for multiple Facebook Fan Pages is, in my opinion, leveraging the FBML app to create a sort of “website” environment directly within Facebook!

It’s like having a website, with website type navigation, but all of the pages consist of Facebook Fan Pages. And since it is actually within Facebook, you get all of the benefits of the viral exposure, sharing, and commenting that Facebook provides!

The Opera Mini 5 mobile browser has been available for all mobile data phones for about the last 6 months, with the exception of Android powered phones. Today that all changes with the Opera Mini 5 for Android.

To get Opera Mini 5 Beta, point your mobile browser to m.opera.com/next, you can also search for “Opera Mini” in the Android Market.

According to Mashable, the Opera Mini 5 for Android is nearly identical to the Opera Mini 5 Beta for other handsets; biggest improvements are speed dial, tabbed browsing, password management and better optimization for touchscreen phones. Compared to the old Opera Mini 4.2, it’s a world of difference, so if you’re an Opera Mini user, you should definitely try out, even though it’s a beta.

Here’s a demo video of The Opera Mini 5 from last year (haven’t found an Android video… yet!)

So I think it all started with worldofwonder.net, when they were bragging about being “well-friended on Facebook”. Apparently World of Wonder is a personal friend of Drew Barrymore on Facebook. However, when Drew updated her Facebook status with “is engaged”, then the close, personal Facebook friendship with World of Wonder went straight out the World of Wonder window!

So when the World of Wonder wrote about the Drew Barrymore engagement announcement on Facebook, it picked up “viral” speed and then Mashable was next in line to post something about the update.

And then that led me to go ahead and something about it as well.

My point here is, instead of spreading the news about Drew Barrymore’s engagement announcement on Facebook, to show you how something goes viral!

I wonder what happened, and why Mashable decided to drop Meebo? When I first started using Meebo you had to actually submit your site for approval to be part of the revenue sharing program. But about a month or so ago, Meebo opened up their platform to anyone who wants to add the Meebo toolbar.

Perhaps that is why Mashable decided to leave Meebo – they went mainstream, and started becoming too “average” with their products.

If I had to guess, I would say that Mashable dropped Meebo because of the new focus that Google is putting on site speed. And one of the best ways to speed up the loading time of your site is to decrease HTML instances – and Meebo has a lot of HTML instances upon pages loading. So by getting rid of Meebo, you are in essence increasing the speed of your site – makes sense to me!

I have the email address to one of the developers at Meebo. I will contact him today to see if I can’t get anymore insight into Mashable dropping Meebo.

So you might be asking, well how does a young child get onto Facebook to play Farmville? C’mon now, you know the answer to that don’t you? They use their parent’s Facebook login to play Farmville!

In 2009, Farmville was the most shared content on Facebook. In fact, Mashable wrote a story showing how there are more Farmville users on Facebook than there are Twitter users – and that is, all Twitter users globally!

Check out this Facebook application user data chart:

And although a lot of this traffic and user data is coming from adults on Facebook, I know that a substantial amount of user data is generated by the children of those adults.

Do you play Farmville on Facebook? Do you know of kids who are playing Farmville as well?

The Army iPhone App (opens iTunes), has received 492 ratings with 255 being 4 stars (the highest) and only 66 being 1 star (the lowest)

According to the Army, since being released late last month, the application has been downloaded more than 20,000 times, placing it among the top 25 free news applications in the AppStore.

Mashable wrote about the Army iPhone App this morning, and again giving it great reviews.

You’d think that the Army iPhone App would geared toward recruiting. But the app is really a leader in delivering up the minute news and information. Plus, it’s full of detailed resources on weapons, aircraft, and various Army vehicles, making it an information packed iPhone App.

Plus, the app can be downloaded for offline use as well, which would be great for doing research right from your desktop.

This is an impressive iPhone App, and along with The White House iPhone App being released yesterday, I think we can see the government starting to lead the way in iPhone App development.

Although the “sharing” function on Facebook – or the equivalent of a retweet – seems to only be live on updates that have links, the functionality and viral marketing exposure that resharing (or retweeting) brings to Facebook is huge.

This is, in my opinion, another example of how the big players on the web are all in “catch up mode”, trying to catch Twitter. I mean, you don’t see Google, Yahoo, and Bing all knocking on the doors of Facebook to get their streams integrated into their search results.

The rumors about a Google Phone seems to be an extension of this “dogfooding” concept. Just today The Google Mobile Blog released some information about how “dogfooding” is going mobile.

And apparently there are hand-held devices created at Google specifically for this “mobile dogfooding” – or testing of mobile products by Google employees.

Mashable has stated today that the article by Google is in response to the “tweets” and rumors about a Google Phone. However, I don’t agree with this view. The article simply seems to be an announcement to the public that Google is taking their “dogfooding” practice mobile and they simply wanted to tell people about it.

What I do see happening however is these devices that are being used by Google could easily make it to the market-place – so perhaps this is the root of the GooglePhone buzz.

I just read this awesome article on Mashable about how “Lufthansa has set up a new service named MySkyStatus that automatically posts the current position of your flight to Twitter or Facebook so your friends can follow your travels.”‘

I’ve also read other articles where “things” are programmed to update their status to Twitter. This got me thinking – how about we figure out a way to have Twitter updates sent to us when any given status that we establish changes that specific status.

Some ideas I have:

* An automated tweet when a stock changes certain percentages up or down, or even when a certain financial calculation hits a pre-established mark. Bam… the status is triggered and we instantly get a tweet about it.

* Much like when you’re flying, but what about also when you’re driving. Can we get a car to automatically tweet it’s location at any given time or intervals?

* Sports updates, scores, etc… when the status of a sporting event changes (Patriots just scored another touchdown, etc.) a Twitter update is launched.

* And for us parent – maybe a way to make our kids cell phones send out Twitter updates about location, etc… when we know they are out late.

Finally, and this is just another random thought, how about we figure out a way to schedule tweets – maybe even to ourselves – and allow tweets from certain individuals give us an alert. The iPhone has a lot of alert functionality!

Anyway, just some random thoughts I had after reading about airplanes that are now sending out automated tweets about their location.

Check it out and let us know what you think in the comments. Better yet – why not add links in the comments to some web albums that show off your iPhone Photoshop work!
