Google Domestic Trends – Graphing Economic Search Trends

Google has just released Google Domestic Trends, a new tool that allows you to track search volume by industry and sectors of the economy.  Read their official blog post.

For example, you want to see graphically how luxury items are searched for throughout the year.  Because, as you can imagine, search volume is directly correlated to sales.  Meaning, people are not typically going to search for industry related products unless they are interested in making a purchase.

Another example where Domestic Trends provides great insight is in the Auto Buyers Index.  Below is a graph where you can see the impact the Cash For Clunkers program had on car sales:
