If you popped into Google today you’ll notice they had a new animation showing their logo change.

They changed the logo to a Sans Serif font, one without much variation in thickness.

Here’s a brief explanation from Google explaining the change:

So why are we doing this now? Once upon a time, Google was one destination that you reached from one device: a desktop PC. These days, people interact with Google products across many different platforms, apps and devices—sometimes all in a single day. You expect Google to help you whenever and wherever you need it, whether it’s on your mobile phone, TV, watch, the dashboard in your car, and yes, even a desktop!

Today we’re introducing a new logo and identity family that reflects this reality and shows you when the Google magic is working for you, even on the tiniest screens. As you’ll see, we’ve taken the Google logo and branding, which were originally built for a single desktop browser page, and updated them for a world of seamless computing across an endless number of devices and different kinds of inputs (such as tap, type and talk).

It doesn’t simply tell you that you’re using Google, but also shows you how Google is working for you. For example, new elements like a colorful Google mic help you identify and interact with Google whether you’re talking, tapping or typing. Meanwhile, we’re bidding adieu to the little blue “g” icon and replacing it with a four-color “G” that matches the logo.

They seem to be using the dots as a pre-loader image for apps and devices, which will show a playful side to the boring waiting GIF’s we are all used to.

Also, they added a new icon that will be used across apps and as a favicon in your browser:

In my opinion the logo change is a good one. I feel that it was only time before they changed the font to a Sans Serif, especially after already flattening the original font that was beveled. Of course you will see all kinds of hate comments when a company makes even a subtle change to their logo, but that’s part of it I guess!

Here are some comments on the change:

Happy 410th birthday Pierre de Fermat, creator of the famous Last Theorem equation that went unsolved for 358 years and earned a spot in the Guinness Book of World Records as the most difficult math problem ever.

What’s the probability (no pun intended…) that someone can create a mathematical problem in the year 1637, and the problem not be solved until the year 1995?

Pretty good actually!

And that’s exactly what mathematician Pierre de Fermat did with his nearly unsolvable equation. And it’s because of Pierre de Fermat’s famous Last Theorem that Google has decided to celebrate his 410th birthday today with a Google Doodle.

You see, it was when Pierre de Fermat was 36 years old, in the year 1637, that he stated in the equation an + bn = cn, if a, b, and c are not equal, then no three positive integers greater than two can satisfy the equation.

And for 358 years, mathematicians throughout the world could not solve this problem. In fact, it’s because of this complexity that Peirre de Fermat’s equation earned a spot in the Guinness Book of World Records for being the most difficult math problem in the world.

It wasn’t until 1995 when a British mathematician named Andrew Wiles was able to solve Pierre de Fermat’s unsolvable equation, working of the foundation of many mathematicians before him.

Happy 410th birthday Pierre de Fermat, and thank you for your contribution the world.

A little more than a year ago, Google celebrated the 30th anniversary of Pacman with a Google Pacman logo. This wasn’t just any ordinary Google Doodle log however, this baby was interactive to the degree you could actually play Pacman right inside the Google logo.

Little did I know, however, was that Google Pacman lives to this day. All you need to know is the right URL – and here it is:

And that’s it – Google Pacman lives and you can play to your heart’s content.

It was rumored last year that when the Google Pacman logo emerged, more than 1 million man hours were consumed during working hours by people playing the game.

Oh well… here’s to accessing the internet at work!

And I’m getting to where I’m anxious to see what new Google logo has been launches, because more often than not, Google is celebrating someone, or something, from the past.

Today’s special occasion is Harry Houdini’s 137th birthday, and Google has a special Google doodle logo just for him.

Google has clearly started a series of Thanksgiving Day Google Logos celebrating Thanksgiving 2010. This series of Thanksgiving logos is a bit different, however, from the normal trend of Google logos that we’ve seen.

Google is actually highlighting an individual who is not celebrating a birthday or an anniversary of some sort. Ina Garten is the chef, and her Thanksgiving Day recipes are the point of focus. And apparently Google is going to be highlighting one new recipe each day up to Thanksgiving which is now two days away. So we can probably expect a new logo tomorrow and Thursday morning, and then be back to normal Google logos on Friday. But then again, you never know with Google.

So we are now on Day 2 of Google’s Thanksgiving Day recipe logos. Yesterday, Google started off the series of logos with this:

And when you clicked the logo, you were taken to the first in the series of recipes called Perfect roast turkey with herb & apple stuffing.

Here it is (click image to go to full page):

So we are now on Day 2 of the Google Thanksgiving Day logos featuring Ina Garten and Google’s logo today is:

Today’s Google logo is obviously featuring the old time classic Thanksgiving favorite pumpkin pie.

But as you can imagine, with Ina Garten, this is no ordinary pumpkin pie. The recipe is for Pumpkin banana mousse tart.

And here it is (click image for full recipe)

There are six recipes in all that are featured on the Ina Garten’s Google website, and you can check out all of her Thanksgiving Day recipes here.

Just click any of the small thumbnail image in the top left of the page.

Google celebrates the 115th Anniversary of X-Ray technology

On November 8th, 1895, Wilhelm Röntgen discovered, by accident, how to view the skeletal structure of a human. Through the use of tubes and radiation, the technology that came to be known as X-radiation occurred through electromagnetic radiation.

Also to note in Google’s x-ray Google doodle is the pigeon in the little “g”.

Google’s Marissa Mayer noted that the small ‘g’ in today’s special doodle is a homage to PigeonRank, a past April Fool’s joke at the company.

Google’s doodles are random ways that Google celebrates historical events. The most notable recent Google doodle was the Pac-Mac Google doodle where you were able to actually play the Pac-Man game directly in the Google logo.

Google is celebrating the 71st anniversary of The Wizard of Oz with a ‘Wizard of Oz’ Google Doodle logo.

Wow, I can’t believe The Wizard of Oz is now 71 years old. The movie was first produced back in 1939 and starred Judy Garland as Dorothy.

The Google logo is representing a scene from the film where Dorothy, Scarecrow, Tin Man, and the Cowardly Lion first see the Emerald City, the capital of the Land of Oz.

You can see the word google in the distance, written across the rolling hillside.

The Wizard of Oz is a film based on the children’s novel by L. Frank Baum, and has become an all time favorite movie for both children and adults of all ages.

Finally, the film has been nominated for several Academy Awards including Best Original Song for the feature song Over the Rainbow.

Google is celebrating the 150th birthday of Alphonse Mucha today with a custom Google Logo (or Google Doodle). The Alphonse Mucha Google logo is a depiction of what of his more famous works of art – however, I have not been able to figure out exactly what piece that is that’s depicted in the Google logo.

The style of Alphonse Mucha is evident, even in the Google logo. Mucha desired to depict women, their styles and images, with decorative art. Many of his paintings were used or reproduced for the purpose of paintings, illustrations, advertisements, and designs.

According to Wikipedia, Alphonse Mucha’s paintings have moments of revivals, but also moments where there is hardly any expanding interest.

So far, the Google logo I see is the same one that’s been there since around midnight. Sometimes, Google will set up a series of images that flip through as each new pageload occurs.

Here’s an image of a Alphonse Mucha logo:

You might be wondering what in the world the word “fodelsedag” means, right? Well come to find out, it means “birthday” in the Swedish language – who would’ve thought! The reason I’m using the word “fodelsedag” in the my article is because yesterday when I wrote about the Josef Franks 125th birthday Google Logo, within a few hours my site was getting flooded with traffic for the keyword phrase Josef Franks 125 födelsedag.

So in Sweden, the Josef Franks birthday must have been a pretty big deal or something, which is cool.

One look at Google though and you’ll see that the Josef Franks 125th birthday Google Logo is still up. So perhaps Google has decided to celebrate the designer’s birthday for a second day in row.

Anyway, for all of the people from Sweden who are hitting this article, and visiting my site for the first time, let me say “welcome” – it’s a pleasure and honor to have you here!

And happy 125th birthday (födelsedag) to Josef Franks.

Sometimes the Google Doodle logo is for something that is very prominent and well known globally. But then there are times like today where Google is celebrating something, or someones birthday, that I have absolutely no idea who they are.

Today is the birthday of designer Josef Franks who would be 125 years old if he were still alive.

Josef Franks is most famous for his textile designs that decorate homes throughout the world.

The Google Doodle logo today celebrates Josef Franks with one of his more popular design patterns The Vegetable Tree, which obviously has been transformed into the shape of the word Google.

Keeping in the spirit of Father’s Day, Google made sure that they give proper recognition to the dad’s of this world (or perhaps Father’s Day is just a US holiday… not sure), with their very own Google Doodle for Father’s Day.

Let’s welcome the Google Father’s Day logo for Father’s Day 2010:

Google has what is becoming a traditional pattern of creating Google Doodle logos for special events, holidays, and other special days. So what should Father’s Day be any different when it comes to a logo for the world’s most popular search engine?

Father’s Day is that special time of year where everyone get’s to thank dad for who he is, what he’s done, and the contribution he makes to the lives of his family and children.

Some of the more popular searches that are being conducted on this Father’s Day 2010 are:

father daughter quotes

fathers day poems

fathers day quotes

printable fathers day cards

I appreciate Google for recognizing Father’s Day 2010 with their own Google Doodle. It helps to reinforce the important role that father’s play in the lives of their children.

At around midnight this morning, Google changed up their logo to celebrate the 100th birthday of Jacques Cousteau with a Google Doodle Jacques Cousteau style. I wrote a quick article about the Jacques Cousteau Google logo and someone almost immediately asked if he was still alive. The answer is “no” – Jacques Cousteau is no longer alive – he died June 25th, 1997 of hearth failure in Paris, France.

Anyway, I digress…

2010 World Cup Google Logo

Google has just recently – in fact, perhaps within the past 30 minutes or so – changed their Google logo from the Jacques Cousteau celebration to a 2010 World Cup Google Logo.

This would now be the 2nd Google logo of today.

The last time I saw Google change up their logo twice in one day was on day 2 of the 2010 Winter Olympics.

Google is now celebrating the 2010 World Cup that started today. The first game of the World Cup was between South Africa and Mexico which just ended in a tie 1-1.

Here’s the 2010 World Cup Google Logo:

Google’s custom logo designs, otherwise known as Google Doodles, seem to be showing up much more frequently than the past. Even entire series of Google logos are showing up such as those that were generated during the 2010 Winter Olympics. For each day during the 2010 Winter Olympics, Google celebrated with a new Google doodle logo.

Today’s Google logo is customized to celebrate the 100th birthday of Jacques Cousteau who, according to Wikipedia was a French naval officer, explorer, ecologist, filmmaker, innovator, scientist, photographer, author and researcher who studied the sea and all forms of life in water. He co-developed the aqua-lung, pioneered marine conservation and was a member of the Académie française. He was commonly known as “le Commandant Cousteau” or “Captain Cousteau“.

Cousteau was born on 11 June 1910, in Saint-André-de-Cubzac, Gironde, to Daniel and Élisabeth Cousteau. He had one brother, Pierre-Antoine. Cousteau completed his preparatory studies at the prestigious Collège Stanislas in Paris. In 1930 he entered the École Navale and graduated as a gunnery officer. After an automobile accident cut short his career in naval aviation, Cousteau indulged his interest in the sea.

More than likely you’ll be able to find a lot of content and information about Jacques Cousteau, his birthday, and the Google logo that is now celebrating his 100th birthday.

Google Background, How To Remove Google Background

Google recently made a change to their homepage by placing a background image that automatically appeared whenever you visited Google.com. The background image would actually change and rotate through different images, all of which would happen automatically.

This new experiment from Google did not go over so well however. Instantly, Google users started to light up the blogosphere with complaints and ridicule for forcing something on Google users that they did not ask for.

So now, one of the biggest searched terms today has been remove Google background. Obviously, since the Google background image happened automatically, people were immediately looking for ways to get rid of it.

How to remove Google’s background image:

Removing the background image is quite simple. And actually, the link to remove the image is very difficult to see because it’s hidden down in the lower left hand corner of the Google homepage.

Simply find the link called “remove homepage image” in the lower left hand corner of the Google homeage > click it > and that’s it, the homepage will go back to it’s original basic design.

UPDATE:

Google has now disabled the homepage image so you no lnoger have to worry about disabling an automatically placed image.

Apparently, Google wanted to be like Bing for second there.

I would highly recommend that Google stay with the simplistic approach to their search engine. It’s been working out “ok” for them so far :-)

One of the coolest times of the year for young Googler’s is May where Google announces their “Doogle 4 Google” winners. The Doodle 4 Google competition is where kids from all over the world submit their Google Doodle – a modified Google logo – and the Doodle’s are judged on various levels.

Typically the winners of the Doodle 4 Google competition create a Google logo that is not only aesthetically pleasing, but also has a great “societal” meaning behind it such as world peace, saving the environment, advancing technology and exploration, etc…

Makenzie Melton’s ‘Rainforest Habitat’

This year’s Doodle 4 Google winner is Makenzie Melton, a third grader at El Dorado Springs R-2 Schools in El Dorado Springs, Missouri. Her winning design, entitled “Rainforest Habitat,” expressed her concern that “the rainforest is in danger and it is not fair to the plants and animals.” Makenzie’s design triumphed over more than 33,000 student submissions from all over the country. Makenzie’s colored-pencil creation beautifully embodied this year’s theme.

Makenzie received a $15,000 college scholarship, a netbook computer and a $25,000 technology grant for a new computer lab at her school. Her doodle will also be featured on the Google.com homepage tomorrow, May 27, for millions of people to enjoy all across the country.

If you’re anything like me, you had fun this past weekend playing the Google Pacman logo game. The Google Pacman logo was how Google recognized the 30th anniversary of the popular video game Pacman.

So Google built a Google Pacman logo where you could actually play the game Pacman right inside the logo itself.

It was pretty cool.

And even cooler was the fact that the Google Pacman game had a 2 players feature.

The Cost of the Google Pacman

The Google Pacman logo came out on Friday, and Google had about 505 million users on Google.com when the Pacman logo went live.

The game took up 4,819,352 hours of employee time and cost the economy a whopping $120,483,800, said Tony Wright, founder of Rescue Time, which is a tool that helps businesses to measure how time and attention was being spent. [source: hindustantimes.com]

“For that same cost, you could hire all 19,385 Google employees. That includes Larry (Page) and Sergey (Brin), right down to the janitors. You could hire them for six weeks – imagine what you could build with that army of manpower,” The Telegraph quoted from Wright’s blog post.

How much time did you spend playing Google Pacman?

I probably didn’t spend as much time on Friday playing Google Pacman as I did on Saturday. The weekend is when I logged maybe an hour total playing the game.

But what about you? Did you get a chance to play Google Pacman? If so, how much time did you spend on it?

As I wrote yesterday on Day 2 of Google Pacman Logo, I predicted that since Pacman logo is not changing, this might just be a weekend long logo change for Google. And when I woke up this morning and fired up Google, I wasn’t too terribly surprised to see the Google Pacman Logo extending into day 3.

Day 3 – Google Pacman Logo

Google must figure that with it being the weekend, people can play the classic Pacman game throughout the weekend and enjoy the free time they might have on the computer.

I’m going to wager, however, that come tomorrow morning (Monday) – and more than likely right at midnight Eastern Standard Time – we are going to see the Google Pacman logo disappear.

Google PAC-MAN 30th Anniversary

One thing the web has been fascinated with over the Google Pacman Logo is not so much the logo itself, but moreso the fact that it’s Pacman’s 30th anniversary. Looking at the traffic stats over the past couple of days, the keyword phrase PAC-MAN 30th Anniversary – and typed exactly like that – has sent waves of traffic to my Google Pacman articles. Moreso than any keywords related to Google Pacman Logo.

How to play Google Pacman Logo game

I’ve written a couple of articles on playing the Google Pacman logo game. But perhaps the best article on playing Google’s Pacman logo is the one I wrote yesterday after I learned how to play 2 players on Google’s Pacman logo.

You can learn how to play Google Pacman logo game here.

Ok – I admit it – I’ve been a Pacman playing fool since yesterday when Google launched their 30th Anniversary Google Pacman Logo.

It almost seems like I’ve either been writing about the Google Pacman Logo or playing Pacman in the Google logo.

Once questions I see that keeps recurring is this:

How do you play 2 players in the Google Pacman logo?

Honestly, I just learned late last night how to even get Mrs. Pacman to come and create the 2 player environment:

Hit the “Insert Coin” to start Pacman > hit the “Insert Coin” a second time to bring up Mrs. Pacman.

But the obvious question is – once Mrs. Pacman is up and running, how do you play 2 players on the same keyboard?

Here’s how to play 2 players on the Google Pacman game:

Google Pacman Player 1:

This is standard game that starts once you hit “Insert Coin”:

Just use the arrow keys to move Pacman around

Google Pacman Player 2 – Mrs. Pacman:

Like I said, to bring up a 2 player Google Pacman game, you have to hit “Insert Coin” twice.

Once Mrs. Pacman is showing, here is how you (the 2nd player) controls Mrs. Pacman:

“w” key-up

“a” key-left

“s” key-down

“d” key-right

And that’s it – now you and whomever can play Pacman in the Google logo as 2 players both on the same keyboard.

Let me know how it goes!

Here’s something that Steve Jobs should be proud of. The new Google Pacman Logo game is not built in flash which means you can play it on your iPhone, iPad, and / or your iPod Touch.

I just pulled up Google on my iPhone and of course I had to first switch to the “classic” Google view on my iPhone Safari browser.

But once I switch over to the Google classic view on my iPhone, the Google Pacman logo game fired right up.

I did not get any sound however – so maybe I did something wrong, but I couldn’t get sound to come through on my iPhone while playing the Google Logo Pacman game.

And this “no sound” issue might also be isolated only to the iPhone. Since I don’t have an iPad or an iPod Touch, I can see what happens with the sound when playing the Google Pacman game.

Google Pacman Logo is Javascript, HTML, and CSS (No Flash)

In a move that even Steve Jobs would be proud of, Google built the Pacman Logo out of Javascript, HTML, and CSS – no flash anywhere to be found.

Steve Jobs doesn’t like flash, as was obvious with the Steve Jobs ‘Thoughts on Flash’ letter.

So do you think that even Steve Jobs might have been proud of the Google Pacman Logo?

Google Pacman 30th Anniversary Logo, Day 2 – Play Pacman on Google

And so it continues! Google’s Pacman Logo is up for a 2nd day as Google celebrates Pacman’s 30th birthday by not only creating a Google Pacman Google Doodle logo, but by turning the Google Pacman Logo into a live game of Pacman that you can actually play.

Play 2 Players on Google Pacman

Here’s something that you may not have noticed. Where the “I’m Feeling Lucky” button used to be is not a button called “Insert Coin”. If you push the “Insert Coin” button once, the game will launch. If you push the “Insert Coin” button a second time, then Ms. Pacman will appear and you can now play simultaneously with two players!

Google Pacman Logo Not Using Flash

The other cool part of the Google Pacman Logo is that it is not using flash – only Javascript, HTML and CSS. So the Google Pacman Logo is something that even Steve Jobs would be proud of.

And since the Google Pacman Logo is not using Flash – this must mean that you can play the Google Pacman Game on your iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad.

Has anyone played the Google Pacman Logo game on their iPad?

How long will Google Celebrate the Pacman 30th anniversary?

There have been several instances in the past where Google carried on for days with a Google Logo celebration.

For example, Google celebrated Sesame Stree’s 40th Anniversary with 7 days of Google logos (see all 7 Sesame Street Google Logos).

Also, for this year’s 2010 Winter Olympics, Google celebrated the Olympic games with a new Google Logo for each day. During the 2010 Winter Olympics, Google decided to highlight one specific winter Olympic game with their Google Logo. And the day 2 Winter Olympic Google Logo actually saw 2 different logos because of the Georgian luger Nodar Kumaritashvili incident where he died during a luge practice run.

I covered all 18 days (I think it was 18 days) of Google’s 2010 Winter Olympic Logos.

So how long exactly Google will continue on with the Pacman 30th Anniversary Logo is unknown at the moment, but since the Pacman Google Logo is the same today as it was yesterday, then I would guess that it will not be up for much longer. Perhaps through the weekend…

What do you think?

So have you played the Google Logo Pacman game yet?

Have you found any little secret golden nuggets or tricks that Google has placed in the Google Pacman game that aren’t obvious initially?

Play Pacman For Free On Google Logo, Pacman’s 30th Anniversary

When I wrote about the Google Pacman Logo earlier today, my intention was to provide a place that allowed you to play Pacman for free online. So I embeded the Pacman game, and all was well. What I didn’t realize until that point was that when I went to Google.com to grab the image of the Google Pacman logo, I started to hear the Pacman game start playing.

At first I was confused as to where the Pacman game was playing. Perhaps I had started Pacman on a different tab somewhere. But I went through all of the tabs and nope – Pacman wasn’t running. But I failed to realize was that Pacman was actually running in the Google Logo.

Play Pacman on the Google Logo

Here’s how you play Pacman on the Google logo:

1) Simply go to Google.com

2) Wait about 5 seconds and suddenly the Pacman game will start up

3) You are now playing Pacman on the Google logo with the Pacman maze actually weaving around the Google logo.

And that’s it – once the game starts, you are now literally playing Pacman inside the Google logo. It’s really quite amazing, and this is clearly the first Google logo that is interactive.

Google celebrates Pacman’s 30th birthday (anniversary)

The reason for the Google Pacman logo is that Google is celebrating Pacman’s 30th anniversary. It’s really hard to believe that Pacman came out when I was…. (sorry, I’ll refrain from revealing my age here).

But I guess I don’t remember the first versions of Pacman. My memory of Pacman picks up around the Atari version.

What about you?

When do you first remember playing Pacman?

Have you played Pacman on Google’s logo yet?

Google is celebrating the 30th birthday of the all time classic arcade game Pac Man. I remember rushing to the local arcade with the change in my hands anxious to get the tokens needed to fire up some Pac Man. And I used to love the old style joy stick of the big, old arcade terminal.

Pacman has found a way to live, and in fact thrive and prosper, in the fast changing world of technology. As technology advanced, Pacman would be offered on almost every single gaming device released – from Nintendo to PS3. And even with the age of mobile devices like the iPhone, Pacman continues to live on and gain exposure.

The Pacman game on the iPhone has a very interesting little twist to the classical way you play Pacman. With Pacman for the iPhone, you can actually select to control the muncher by simply tilting your iPhone. This makes playing Pacman unlike anything you’ve ever done before.

And now I’m sure there is also Pacman for the iPad. I can say for sure since I don’t own an iPad (yet), but I’m that Pacman for the iPad is out there. It would be really cool if you select the “tilt” option with the iPad, then you’d be controlling the muncher much like you’d be steering a car with a steering wheel.

Google’s Pacman Logo (Pacman Google Doodle)

Google is celebrating the 30th anniversary (30th birthday) of Pacman with a custom Google Doodle for Pacman.

First interactive Google Doodle Logo – Pacman

Did you know that you can actually play pacman in the Google logo?

Just click the Google Pacman logo and start playing pacman – but you’ll be navigating around the letter’s in the Google logo.

Pretty cool stuff.

For some reason, CBS decided to do some coverage on the Google Doodles – the custom Google logo designs that Google creates to celebrate birthdays, special events, anniversaries, and other special occasions.

Here’s what CBS had to say about Google Doodles:

One of the most identifiable logos in the world, that of the Internet search engine Google, gets a makeover far more frequently than most corporate brands do. But it’s not to update a company’s image for a fickle audience; instead it’s to tickle the audience’s funnybone. Visitors to the site on certain days may have found illustrations celebrating the Large Hadron Collidor (Sept. 10, 2008), the laser (May 16, 2008), and Lego bricks (Jan. 28, 2008).

You can follow along with Google Doodles at their Google Doodle page.

Google is creating new logos (Doodles) quite frequently, but here in the US you only see a small sampling of the logos.

Google is updating their Google logos throughout the world on a continual basis. Since Google has many different homepages in just as many languages, these Google Doodles are all customized to their specific native language and country, and the events that are happening in their culture.

Here at Social Media SEO, I cover a lot of the custom Google Doodles that appear on the United States homepage for Google.

You can check them out below in the Related Posts.
