Since launching the Google Nexus One, Google has shown signs that it is ready to enter the smartphone space.

And oh yeah, there’s this mobile phone operating system called Android that Google has developed as well and it already becoming a major competitor to the iPhone.

So does all of this mean that Google is getting ready to enter the cell phone service space?

Granted, their first experience with the Nexus One was a disaster, but that doesn’t mean anything really – it’s all part of the iterations of growth.

Ari Zoldan, an analysts with Quantum Networks, believe that Google is definitely moving in the direction of becoming a mobile phone service provider.

Zoldan stated that the search engine giant would likely make the move if they “could find an easy way to transition into the cell space.”

Thoughts?

Someone made a recent comment on my “Why Google Is Smart To Close The Nexus Online Store” article asking “why Google stopped producing the Nexus 1.”

I think this is a great question because after all, aren’t there still a whole bunch of Nexus One customers out there who are still happy with their smarthphones?

Of course there are.

And the percentage of people that were complaining, or having issues with their Nexus One purchase, were a very small percentage compared to the overall customer base.

I believe the reason why Google ejected from the Nexus One is because of the simple economic principle of “comparative advantage”.

According to Wikipedia, comparative advantage is defined as:

In economics, the law of comparative advantage refers to the ability of a party (an individual, a firm, or a country) to produce a particular good or service at a lower opportunity cost than another party. It is the ability to produce a product with the highest relative efficiency given all the other products that could be produced

So even though, yes, Google can make the Nexus One and to a certain degree have
satisfied customers, it’s not there strong point.

Google’s strength is in creating platforms (i.e. Google search, Android OS,
etc…) that scale.

I think Google’s decision to eject from the Nexus One is a great lesson for
all us – they’ve taught us to focus on what we know, what we have a
comparative advantage in, and not spend our resources on things that we are
not “scaling”.

Seven months ago Google decided to launch their own mobile phone, the Nexus One. But instead of working through carriers like AT&T or Verizon, Google decided instead to take on the challenge by themselves. But this ultimately ended up on a customer service, and PR nightmare for Google.

So after seven months of the Nexus One being available at the Google store website, Google made their official announcement moments ago by changing out their website to the following:

After Google failed to live up to customer’s expectations in regards to customer service, phone support, and other direct carrier obligations, the search giant decided to focus on what it does best for mobile phones, and that is distribute and optimize their Google Android OS (mobile operating system).

This is a great move in my opinion since Google has:

1) Never been known for great customer service

2) Has a bunch of computer scientists and engineers, and so what they do best is create amazing software applications.

Google will do far better in the mobile market by focusing on the development of Android, and the distribution of Android to a growing mobile phone market.

And I think ultimately what we are seeing here is that Google is not afraid to try something and fail. In fact, I believe Google would define success – in some aspects of the term – as failing!

Last week Google announced they will be shutting down the Nexus One online store – the location where Google took orders for their new Nexus One mobile phone.

When exactly the online store will come down I’m not sure, (maybe someone out there has this info), but as of right now, you can visit the online store and you’ll see the Nexus One available for purchase >> Google.com/NexusOne

How Google Lost Their Way

I wrote an article not too long ago discussing how I felt that Google lost their way when they decided to become a mobile phone carrier like Verizon or AT&T.

Notice I said a mobile phone carrier! I don’t believe for a second that Google’s mistake was in launching the Nexus One mobile phone. The problem was when they (Google) tried to become the carrier, distributor, manufacturer, and customer service representative for the Nexus One.

Google is made up of computer scientists – not customer service reps, and not even sales folks. Quite frankly, a bunch of geeks work at Google who sit around all day (and night) developing new innovative technologies and applications. Not to mention the bread and butter of Google which is search.

When Google developed Android, the operating system that is now being utilized on multiple mobile phones and other devices (including cars), they were right in their element. Google is a master at developing systems and platforms upon which the rest of the world can run their applications.

The Nexus One, powered by Android, was a perfect example of a mobile phone running on the Android platform. And Google was keeping within their element when they opened Android up to a wide range of companies and developers.

But then Google made the mistake of trying to sell, ship, and service the Nexus One to customers via other phone carriers.

Someone at Google must have felt in their gut that launching the Nexus One store was a mistake. It was so far out of their element that someone, somewhere within Google had to sense it.

So as to be expected, whenever you try to do something where you don’t have the comparative advantage, Google failed miserably.

However, Google’s CEO Eric Schmidt will be quick to tell you that failure actually defines success.

If you’re failing, then you are in a sense experiencing success.

Almost immediately after Google launch the Nexus One, customers started complaining not only about the device, but the fact that Google’s customer service was basically absent.

Google isn’t designed to be a retailer – they are designed to be developers of amazing platforms and innovative applications.

So when Google announced they were closing their Nexus One online store, and in turn looking to distribute and sell the Nexus One through multiple carriers, I must say that I was proud of Google for making that decision. And I know, me being proud of Google doesn’t really matter a hill of beans to Google… but still.

I’m impressed because Google isn’t afraid to try something new – and they definitely aren’t afraid to fail.

This has really been a point of inspiration to me.

But what else is inspiring, and very important to learn from, is that Google knows when it’s time to quit.

And because Google knows when to quit, it makes sense then that Google CEO Eric Schmidt defines failure as being an element of success.

Once Google has increased Nexus One’s presence in retail stores they will no longer sell the handset through the online store. Instead the company plans on using the Google phone website as a window to show case the variety of Android based handsets that are available worldwide.

Google Nexus One – How Google Lost Their Way

I’m sure you’ve heard by now about the customer service nightmare that unfolded within hours of Google launching their Nexus One mobile phone. The Nexus One was suppose to be the iPhone killer, coming onto the data device scene with a storm (no pun intended Blackberry), and becoming the overnight sensation and success that Google was looking for.

There were a lot of things that happened over night when Google’s Nexus One launched, but “sensationalism” and “success” were not one of them – unfortunately.

Google found itself in the middle of a customer service nightmare in fact. Forums started ripping Google on issues such as 3G not holding its connection and other hardware and software failures. And it was obvious that Google was not ready for this onslaught of customer service requests – in fact, it seemed as if Google wasn’t ready for anything actually. The only customer service line of communication that customers had was to submit a ticket via email to Google and then within 48 hours, supposedly the customer would hear back from the customer support.

The only problem here is that the problems were mounting very fast, and Google did not have the support in place to handle all the tickets. In fact, Google tried to off load the customer service inquiries to other companies, who in turn tried to offload the customer service demands back to Google. Needless to say, it was a gaggle in the largest magnitude of the word.

I see the Google Nexus One phone as an example of how Google lost their way. And what I mean by this is Google is, and always has been, a provider of platforms. Obvious examples of being a platform provider is Google. Google search creates massive search volume on the web, and then Google has a platform (Google Adwords) upon which businesses can get exposure to all of those keyword searches. Another example of a platform that Google has built and thrives upon is Google Android. The Android OS has been designed, initially for mobile phones, but is quickly expanding into other devices such as TV’s and even cars.

You see, the point here is the Google is best at building, providing, and facilitating a platform upon which other companies build products and innovation. With Google Nexus One, Google truly lost their way and completely forgot who they were and what they were best at. Obviously Google has learned this lesson the hard way by launching a product and then dealing with the aftermath. I actually commend Google for trying, but when you look at who “Google” is, and what they are best at, then individual product launches is not their strong suit – platform provider and innovation is where Google excels.

Google launched their Nexus One data phone on January 5th, 2010. Since the moment Google put the Nexus One on the market for sale, there has been nothing but problems with the device for customers.

Most of the Nexus One issues, initially anyway, were associated with not keeping a 3G connection, and other software and hardware issues.

Today, Google presented a new issue they are having because of the Nexus One, and this time it’s with the actual purchase transaction with the customer.

It’s being reported that Google is starting to issue refunds to Nexus One owners who have overpaid the taxes associated with their purchase.

According i4u.com:

I received an email this morning, informing me that I had been overcharged on the tax on my Nexus One. As such, Google is giving me a refund. It isn’t just me either. It seems that everyone who purchased a Nexus One at or around launch is being notified.

Once Google sends you the email, you’ll have to verify the card you want to receive the refund on by signing into your Google Checkout account and choosing to view the order. If the card you originally used is no longer valid, you’ll be able to pick another. Google is also willing to mail you a check for the amount of the refund.

This is just another problem that Google is finding themselves plagued with over their Nexus One phone.

Google would have been better off just leaving themselves out of the physical mobile phone market and sticking to what they know best – building a platform (Google Android OS) upon which all other mobile devices can run and be developed.

Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) shares trading at 529.29, +0.23 (0.04%)

The move by Verizon to not sell Google’s Nexus One phone is not something that I believe took Google by surprise. In fact, if I had to wager on the decision, Google more than likely had as much influence on the decision as Verizon did. I know the headlines read “Verizon Ejects Google Nexus One Phone” – but those are just media headlines. I believe there is a lot more at work here.

Google’s Trouble With Nexus One

Google figured that with the Nexus One, they could somehow add more saturation of their Android OS into the mobile phone market space. After all, more Android powered devices, the more market share Google commands, right?

In the short term, yes – but in the long term, it will actually start to hurt Google’s business model and in fact work adversely against Google, thus decreasing the Android OS market share.

Here’s why…

Google learned a valuable lesson when it launched their Nexus One phone. They learned that they just cannot handle, and did not foresee perhaps, the customer support demand that was going to be required of them upon the Nexus One getting into the hands of customers.

No sooner did people turn on their Nexus One devices and suddenly all sorts of problems started to arise – 3G was not stable, software was not booting up properly, apps were not working properly, and so on… And the fall out came when masses of customers needed customer support for help with their issues.

But there wasn’t any real Nexus One customer support available. People had to submit an email, and then within 48 hours (2 days) they would hear back from someone. Typically the response was very short, very non-specific, and very non-personable. Ultimately, customers weren’t getting support and so they turned to forums to start hammering Google on the Nexus One phone.

Google Needs To Focus on Android

I think that Google realizes that in the long run, the best way to increase Android OS market share is to focus on what they do best and that is developing, improvising, and optimizing Android.

This happens in a lot of different ways – encouraging app development, working with both hardware and phone developers to mobile phone carriers, and supporting open source.

What Google doesn’t need to do is try to be a mobile phone carrier or mobile phone manufacturer. And by trying to be something they are not in turn will create an ocean of angry, dissatisfied customers that will ultimately start working against Google’s reputation, and in having an adverse affect on the Android OS market share.

Google Probably Encouraged Verizon’s Decision

I believe that Google more than likely encouraged Verizon’s decision because they new that once Verizon started selling the Nexus One, then the whole customer service train wreck would be starting all over again.

So instead, even before Verizon announced that they will not be selling the Nexus One phone, Google was already encouraging people to buy the HTC Droid Incredible which is now available for pre-order.

So ultimately, Google is positioning themselves build upon their strengths and ejecting from the their weak points in the market place.

Verizon deciding to not sell the Nexus One was, in my opinion, more of a by product of Google’s decision making and less of Verizon’s influence overall.

Sure, you can visit the Google Nexus One website and see that the Nexus One is coming to Verizon. But what you don’t see is a release date for the Verizon Nexus One. You can even sign up via email to get alerts about the Verizon Nexus One release. But my point here is that what you don’t get is a solid release date!

And there’s a pretty darn good reason Verizon has yet to give a release date for the Nexus One and that is because of the deficiencies associated with the Nexus One phone.

You may remembered when Google first launched the Nexus One phone. It wasn’t but a couple of days later when reports were filling the web with Nexus One customer complaints about everything from hardware issue, 3G connectivity complaints, and even complaints about Google’s customer service – which has always traditionally been lacking.

So Verizon has absolutely no interest in bringing on the Nexus One phone, and then instantly jamming up their customer service lines with Nexus One complaints and service calls.

I believe that Verizon is going to hold Google to a very high standard regarding the quality of both the hardware and software of the Google Nexus One phone.

Verizon is not as ambitious as Google was when they first launched the Nexus One.

And the delay in the Verizon Nexus One is directly related to Verizon holding Google to a higher standard of quality.

If Google wants the Nexus One to come to Verizon, then they better get the hardware and software issues squared away. Because I don’t believe for a minute that Verizon wants to inherit the drama that Google experienced in that first week of the Nexus One launch.

One of the biggest selling points for Google’s Nexus One phone is the fact that it has the ability to run Flash Player 10.1.

Contrary to the iPhone (and Apple, and Steve Jobs, etc…) and the fact that they are adamant about not running Flash because, as Steve Jobs puts it, “it’s too buggy!”

Nonetheless, the Nexus One is proud to be able to run Flash and again, it’s one of the strongest selling points for the mobile device.

Below is a video I recently found that shows off the Flash Player 10.1 capabilities on Google’s Nexus One phone.

Check it out below:

What do you think?

So what do you think about Nexus One and it’s ability to run Flash Player 10.1 – and run flash on the mobile device?

Better yet, do you think Apple is making a big mistake by not running flash on the iPhone, and now the iPad?

Very soon, you may be able to purchase accessories such as cases and covers for your Nexus One phone at T-Mobile.

According to TmoToday, T-Mobile has been receiving new shipments of Nexus One phone accessories. However, T-Mobile isn’t the only place where you can get Nexus One accessories; Google and Seidio both carry Nexus One accessories.

Items such as Nexus One cases and covers are said to be the primary accessories that are showing up at the T-Mobile stores. Does this mean the Nexus One is coming to T-Mobile?

According to TmoToday, if you take a look at the above image, you’ll see that the device’s name isn’t the “Google” Nexus One; for the first time, the phone is being branded as an HTC device. Also, there’s T-Mobile branding on the boxing around the accessories. Could this mean that the Nexus One is finally being brought into T-Mobile stores to be sold? Maybe.

Google’s move in expanding the Nexus One to T-Mobile makes perfect sense to me. Google desires to make the web accessible in every way possible, so it makes sense to expand the Nexus One to as many carriers as possible. Heck, you can even get the Nexus One for AT&T now if you’d like.

Although this video is 2 months old and has over 1.1 million views, I figured there might be a few of you left who haven’t seen it. It’s a great video that shows a side by side comparison of the Nexus One Google Phone vs the iPhone.

I would say that in the end, the Nexus One comes away the winner. The iPhone, however, got a solid jump on the Nexus One in the marketplace and is empowered by a stronger brand.

I believe we are in the midst of a mobile revolution. Mobile phones (iPhone, Nexus One, Blackberry, etc…) and now mobile devices (i.e. iPad, HP Slate, etc…) are starting to dominate the mobile landscape. When I drive around town, which is a very big college town mind you, I see people walking around the streets with either a mobile phone up to their ear or their face staring down at a mobile device. What are they doing while staring down? They are either reading something on the web, reading a text message, or creating a text reply or email.

It’s sometimes funny actually to see so many people walking around town engaging in their mobile device. In a lot of cases it’s scary because the same is true with people in their cars. I’m seeing more and more people driving down interacting with their mobile phones. And I don’t mean just talking on the phone. People are texting, reading web pages, emails, etc… everything you’d normally do while sitting at a desk in front of a computer.

So when it comes to these mobile phones, what particular device stands out from the rest?

In my opinion, Google’s Nexus One is head and shoulders above all other devices. Simply from the point of diversity, Google’s Nexus One is powered by an open source platform – that being Android (and now Android 2.1). That means that any application can be installed and run on the device and it is not confined to a particular protocol like the iPhone OS.

Plus, Google’s Nexus One is spread out across multiple carriers. This again diversifies the Nexus One’s reach and influence in the marketplace by giving more people more choices in who the carrier is, what pricing package to chose, etc…

Because of the open source Android platform, multiple carrier exposure, and prominent features that come standard on the Nexus One phone, I believe we will see Google’s Nexus One far ahead of all other devices as the mobile revolution continues to unfold.

What do you think?

Do you agree that we are in the midst of a mobile revolution?

Do you agree that Google’s Nexus One is leading the mobile industry?

Verizon is determined to the be carrier that is facilitating the mobile revolution. Earlier today I wrote about how Verizon may have hinted via Twitter that the HTC Incredible was about to be released.

Now, on top of the HTC Incredible rumors we also have Google’s phone Nexus One coming to Verizon.

One of the moves that allude to Verizon making room for the HTC Incredible and the Google phone Nexus One is their announcement that they will will slash the prices of the Palm Pre Plus and Pixi Plus to $49.99 and $29.99 only. Both palm phones will come with a 2 year contract and will sold on a “buy one get on free” basis.

Additionally, Verizon is throwing in its Mobile HotSpot plan for free (normally $40/month). With this service your Palm phone will turn into a 3G modem, allowing any other Wi-Fi capable device such as a netbook or iPad to connect to the Web, according to OZCarGuide.com.

In today’s world, people are so quick to lose sight of sound business principles such as patience, iteration, and studying analytics. Although the Google Nexus One phone is new to the marketplace with disappointing sales so far, it has 3 things going for it that will allow it to thrive in the long term.

3 Reasons Google’s Nexus One phone will thrive:

1) Open Source

Google has always embraced the open source community with their products, and the Google Nexus One phone is no different. Because the Nexus One is driven by an open source community, more apps will be developed and launched for the Nexus One compared to the iPhone. Apple’s iPhone App selection process is anything but open source, and this makes the app marketplace a bit limited in its scope.

Open source allows for mass production. But, this mass production is very democratic, meaning only the good (or great) apps will ever rise to high levels of popularity.

2) Android Operating System

Yes, Android runs on a lot of different phones, but it’s also the operating system for the Nexus One phone. The difference between the Nexus One and all the other phones is that Google owns it and puts its own stamp of approval on it.

The open source Android operating system on the Nexus One phone means that Google will be employing their own engineers to make the Nexus One more efficient. This “in house” approach of Google will more than likely launch the Nexus One far ahead of their competitors that are equally powered by Android.

3) Advertising Revenue Potential

There is already a rumor floating around that advertisers are experiencing better returns on their marketing dollars from the Nexus One phone compared to the iPhone.

The two reasons I described above are contributing to the Nexus One phone running faster, and more efficiently.

A faster, more efficient mobile device allows for faster web access and more efficient web browsing. These elements contribute to more exposure, and higher quality presentations of ads to the web browsers.

The Nexus One was designed by Google for a reason. Because they figured if they built their own phone, then all of the most important factors for delivering a faster, higher quality web browsing experience would easier.

Why would Google care about that?

Because 99% of Google’s revenue comes from search and content network advertisers via their Google Adwords advertising platform.

Just when you thought the Google Nexus One phone was having a hard time gaining traction in the market place, we are presented with a news release that tells breaks this trend.

Last month, February, the Google Nexus One phone actually outsold the iPhone globally.

According to 3G.uk, sales of the Google Nexus One are now on the rise and beat the iPhone by 16% in February this year.

This trend is expected to continue as we move forward throughout the year and into 2011.

One of the benefits the Google Nexus One phone has over the iPhone is that it comes “jail-broken”. Meaning, by design, the Nexus One can be used on different carriers as opposed to the iPhone which is exclusive to AT&T.

Some other advantages the Google Nexus One phone has over the iPhone is the “open source” platform of Android. The Google Android OS (operating system) allows for open development of applications and customization of the phone. The iPhone is more securely maintained by Apple, and the applications for the iPhone have to go through a strict review process at Apple before they ever make it to the iPhone.

It will be interesting see how the iPhone can measure up to Google’s Nexus One phone in the coming year.

This Twitter profile could very easily be used as the central base for customer service issues. Plus, if Google used Twitter and created a hashtag like #googlenexusone, and that’s what everyone used to post their problems, then the Twitter community could come in and help people out. This would take the burden away from Google trying to keep up with customer support demand.

But Google decided to create it’s own branded phone – the Nexus One. And along with that “own branded phone” and “direct sales” approach comes all of the customer service issues as well.

And Google is finding itself completely unprepared for the challenge.

Right now, the only customer service that Google is offering is by email. And with that, Google promises a 2 – 3 day response to your email support question.

This is unacceptable to most people who are used to calling a support line, or finding helpful open forums to answer their questions.

Google’s Nexus One was a great news line for everyone, but now Google’s image might be getting dragged through the mud over the support being offered for their new phone.

Google has even launched a promotional webpage specifically for the Nexus One where you can buy the phone and watch a flash demo of all the cool features.

But for the marketing of the phone, Google has turned to a very unique platform. And this strategy is, I do believe, a first for Google!

Google is promoting the Nexus One right from the homepage of Google. Google.com is one of the most visited web properties globally, and I don’t believe Google has ever “official” promoted a product from their homepage before. So I do believe that the Nexus One makes it a first for Google.

But then again, when you own the product you are promoting, and you also happen to own the world’s most visiting website, then I suppose you can probably do whatever you want!

Here’s an image from the homepage of Google.com:

The Google Phone Nexus One comes equipped with Flash Player 10.1. And because the Nexus One has Flash support, this puts it at a huge advantage over the iPhone. With the support of Flash on the Nexus One, you’ll be able to experience web pages, interaction, and online gaming in ways that are not possible on the iPhone.

Watch the Flash Player 10.1 on Google’s Nexus One Phone video below:

Flash is the missing piece in mobile web browsing that really brings the web to life, and the Google phone Nexus One gains a substantial advantage over the iPhone because of Flash support.

Here’s a video

“So, the nitty gritty: 3.7-inch AMOLED display, 1GHz Snapdragon processor, compass, GPS, accelerometer, light and proximity sensor, and a multicolored LED under the trackball. There are also two mics onboard for the purpose of noise cancellation, similar to Motorola’s CrystalTalk, and the phone is naturally running the brand new Android 2.1. The phone is actually HTC branded, unlike the pre-release versions we’ve seen.”

I thought this was a very strange idea indeed, and wasn’t sure how the concept would be received.

Well… I’m happy to say that I’m not the only one thinking that the Google Phone “Nexus One” could be free! Today I found an article from Android Guys that was making the case for a free Google Phone!

Again, the argument here is that Google gives all of their amazing products away for free. And most of them are in an attempt to either help you become a long term advertiser on Google Adwords, or to help you more quickly access web pages (where Google ads are showing).

The same is true for mobile phones. The easier Google can make for you to get on the web via mobile phones, and the faster Google can help you browse faster on those phones, then the more ad exposure Google advertisers will receive – and of course, the more ad revenue Google will collect.

I’m telling you – just remember where you heard it first when the Google Phone “Nexus One” is given away for free!

One of the main features that immediately caught my attention was that a) the phone was jail-broken for use on AT&T, and b) the phone’s Internet speed is only Edge (indicated by the “E” on the phone) and not 3G.

This is going to be huge point of discouragement if in fact, once the Google Phone Nexus One is released, there is only Edge speed and not 3G.

But on the other hand, if AT&T does carry the Nexus One, then Google has successfully gotten their Android OS into the 2 main phone carriers in the US – Verizon and AT&T. T-Mobile is said to already be a partner for the Google Phone Nexus One.
