Sprint announced via email yesterday that Denver, Colorado now has 4G coverage.

With the arrival of Sprint 4G in Denver, Sprint’s count of cities with 4G coverage rises to 74 cities nationwide – a pretty impressive number.

Sprint’s 4G coverage is powered by Clear, and without a doubt, Clear has the best Sprint 4G coverage map where you can view each city on a Google map, and then also view a comprehensible list below the map.

Some recent city launches to note – Sprint is now available in major metro areas such as New York City, Chicago, Los Angeles, and Houston.

I’ve written before about Sprint’s 4G network coming to New York City. And we even covered the news when Sprint 4G was being tested in New York City back in August. Well today, the rumors and small snippets of news comes to an end. Sprint has made their official announcement that their 4G network has finally arrived in New York City.

New York City is a huge market for Sprint’s 4G network to cover due to the population, data devices, and wide spread reach that people in New York have regarding telling other people about Sprint’s 4G network.

The question now is, when will Verizon start flexing their 4G network muscles – and AT&T as well – and start taking a chunk out of Sprint’s aggressive expansion of their 4G network throughout the Unites States.

Sprint 4G Now In 61 markets throughout the United States

Here’s the announcement made by Sprint via their community platform back on November 1st:

Starting today, November 1, 2010 – Sprint 4G – the next generation in wireless service – is available to customers in New York City, Hartford, New Haven, New Brunswick, Trenton and Tampa. With Sprint 4G, wireless customers can experience mobile downloads, video chat capabilities and turbo-charged Web browsing.

Back in August we covered reports of Sprint’s 4G network being spotted in the New York City area which turned out to be Sprint was in the metro NYC testing out their 4G network. Today it’s official however, Sprint has announced the arrival of their 4G mobile data speed to New York City, Hartford, New Haven, New Brunswick, Trenton and Tampa, brining the total of Sprint 4G-enabled cities to 61.

Sprint / Clear 4G speeds will work on any 4G enabled handset, or their Overdrive 4G MiFi mobile hotspot.

Earlier this month, on October 6th, 2010, Verizon announced their 4G LTE (4G Long Term Evolution) expansion plans. The announcement was made by Lowell McAdam, president and chief operating officer of Verizon, and it detailed how Verizon Wireless will launch in 38 major metropolitan areas, covering more than 110 million Americans, by the end of the 2010.

That’s a pretty aggressive expansion plan for Verizon’s 4G network and literally overnight, Sprint’s 4G coverage is up against serious competition.

In addition, the company is launching its 4G LTE in more than 60 commercial airports coast to coast – both the airports within the launch areas plus airports in other key cities.

One of the hottest topics in the mobile internet and smartphone data arena is Sprint’s 4G coverage areas. Say what you will about Sprint, but they have up to this point been the leader in providing 4G coverage in cities throughout the United States.

I was just checking out the Sprint / Clear 4G coverage map and noticed that Texas currently has more 4G coverage metro areas than other state in the US. Texas has 12 cities that are currently covered under Sprint’s 4G cloud. The next closest is Washington state which has 9 cities with Sprint’s 4G coverage cloud.

Well thanks to Clear, the company behind the towers and technology of Sprint’s 4G coverage, there is a much more comprehensive map for us to follow.

What I like best about the map is that it shows future coverage areas. Cities like New York City, Tampa, and Miami are all slated to get 4G coverage soon, according to the map.

And we know that Sprint 4G in New York City is already being tested.

So all you need to do is purchase a Sprint 4G Overdrive Mobile Hotspot, and then your iPhone, iPad, or any other mobile device, can instantly turn into a 4G mobile device. So in reality, you’d then have an iPad 4G or an iPhone 4G.

The Spring 4G Overdrive Mobile Hotspot costs $99.99, and of course, 4G speeds would only be available where 4G speed is accessible – currently the Sprint 4G coverage map can show you where.

Sprint has just added 4G coverage to Nashville, Tennessee. This makes about a dozen or so new cities that have been brought online with Sprint’s 4G WiMax coverage in the past 2 months.

The big city that this still waiting for 4G is New York, Los Angeles, and San Francisco.

Although ClearWire – Sprint’s exclusive 4G carrier – has made recent statements that 4G is already in New York and coming online intermittently.

So congrats Nashville – let us know what kind of download speeds you’re getting!

Clearwire made some recent announcements that lay out the current 4G coverage cities along with the metro areas that are scheduled to come online.

Sprint’s 4G coverage map has, for some reason, been a non-friendly source for tracking the 4G coverage areas. And lists like this seem to be about the most comprehensive at providing the 4G coverage areas.

So here’s what we know so far:

I just wrote about how MetroPCS is bringing 4G to Dallas and Las Vegas next month (September).

Well guess who else just so happens to have 4G running in Dallas and Las Vegas?

You guessed it… Sprint’s 4G network is already running in those two metro areas.!

So if I’m not mistaken (which I admit, can happen from time to time), this means the 4G mobile internet wars have official began.

And the battle grounds begin in Dallas and Las Vegas.

This is going to be exciting to watch as two of the mid-size mobile phone carriers battle for 4G dominance.

But just wait until one of the giants shows up for battle – that being Verizon or AT&T – that will be like a nuclear bomb being dropped on both MetroPCS and Sprint.

That’s what I think anyway…

MetroPCS to bring their 4G LTE network to Dallas and Las Vegas next month (September) according to a Samsung executive.

In a move that will compete directly with Sprint, pre-paid mobile phone provider MetroPCS has announced the arrival of their 4G LTE network.

According to a Samsung vice president Jaebeom Choi with systems research and development, MetroPCS will bring their LTE (4G) network online in Las Vegas and Dallas sometime in September.

There is now an official 4G war Dallas and Las Vegas between Sprint and MetroPCS.

PC Mag took to the streets to test the download speeds of Sprint’s 4G network at various locations throughout the United States. Now granted, the article recapping their test results was published back in June, 2010 so a lot may have changed, but the news is still interesting.

Out of all the places tested in the United States, the location with the fastest 4G download speed was mid-town Atlanta, Georgia. Good ol’ Altanta… where the traffic is thick and the internet is fast!

The speed that was achieved in mid-town Atlanta on Sprint’s 4G network was 9.11 Mbits/sec.

Since this data is from a few months ago (a lifetime with this technology), can anyone update us on locations that are getting faster than 9.1 Mbits/sec via 4G?

Although the reports are sporadic, there are reports nonetheless that 4G is being picked up by various Sprint customers at various locations throughout New York City.

New York City is a major hub of cell phone activity in the United States – perhaps the biggest hub – and Sprint 4G showing up in this market could mean a big boost in Sprint’s customer acquisition and expansion of market place. This is especially true if Sprint can be the first to arrive in the New York market.

Know Your Cell reached out to a Sprint spokesperson for comment and was reassured that 4G service has not yet launched in New York:

We have not launched 4G in NYC yet. As they have been recently, customers may continue to stumble across 4G from time to time in NYC as we work to build, test and optimize the network.

So are we close to seeing 4G arrive in the NYC market, and will Sprint be the first one to arrive on the scene?

This is important (for Sprint anyway).

This could be attributed to the news that Sprint has actually made an gain in the number of subscribers it added in the second quarter of 2010.

Sprint Nextel (NYSE:S) is current up +0.11 (2.38%) at 4.94.

What are some of the factors that may have contributed to this feat?

Let’s run through a few that I think are relevant:

1) Sprint had the first 4G network

Say what you will about Sprint, no one can take away the fact that they blazed a trail into the world of 4G data.

The Sprint 4G coverage map is ever expanding. And Sprint is aggressively pushing more metro areas to it’s list of 4G enabled locations.

However, all of this effort into expanding their 4G network might be trumped by a possible 4G satellite that places a cloud over the entire United States.

2) 4G enabled mobile phones

Along with being the first 4G data provider, Sprint can also claim to provide the first 4G enabled mobile phone.

The HTC EVO 4G was Sprint’s first 4G experience, and the device has captured everyone’s attention simply because… well… it was a first to the market.

3) Possible acquisition of T Mobile to become 3rd largest US carrier

Finally, I see Sprint as being a great candidate to acquire the struggling the T Mobile carrier.

T Mobile would be great acquisition for Sprint and would, in essence, make Sprint the third largest US mobile phone carrier behind AT&T and Verizon.

So what do you think?

Is Sprint gearing up to be a true, long term competitor in the mobile phone and carrier market, or will they simply be plowed over by those with more resources and exposure?

Sprint is aggressively expanding their 4G coverage area, and rightly so. If you buy a 4G enabled phone, like the HTC EVO 4G, then you are going to pay $10 extra for the 4G data package – regardless of whether your city gets 4G or not!

So, if you live in one of the 9 cities below, then Sprint has just announced their 4G coverage of your city:

One side note, if you don’t live in a city that has 4G coverage, then I think you’ll find the Sprint data plans affordable compared to the likes of AT&T and Verizon, even if you only get 3G for now.

Now, after a couple of minutes of trying to figure out what in the world you are looking at, maybe… just maybe, you figured out where the Sprint Devices with 4G tab is, and then you may have even clicked on it.

But if you click on it, you’ll notice that the Sprint 4G coverage map is all green or orange, yet the 4G coverage legend will show the areas in blue.

Well obviously, 4G coverage is not prominent throughout the US yet, so you have to zoom the map in considerably to try to see where the 4G coverage is. But since you don’t really know where the 4G coverage is (which is why you came to the map in the first place, to try and see where the 4G coverage is) you have to now grab and scan the map to find an area where 4G is covered.

But did you notice that the map, as soon as you zoom or grab and move, stays in “loading” status forever?

Yeah – Sprint’s 4G coverage map sucks at the moment!

Someone at Sprint needs to step up to the plate and put together a comprehensive 4G coverage map before I do it myself and steal all of your traffic!

Sprint 4G Adds Kansas City To 4G Coverage Area

About 6 hours ago I got an email from Sprint announcing they added Kansas City, Missouri to their list of 4G coverage metro areas. I suppose this is a pretty big deal because I don’t recall receiving an email announcing an individual city within the past 4 weeks or so.

I’m wondering first of all if anyone from Kansas City would mind chiming in and letting us know your experience with Sprint’s 4G coverage, speed, etc…

Secondly, I’ve read that in the areas where 4G is live, people are reporting that coverage can be a bit choppy at times but when 4G is up and running, it is ripping fast!

So why Kansas City?

Finally, I’m left wondering why Sprint is rolling out 4G coverage is moderately sized metro areas throughout the US?

Cities like Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Miami are still waiting for 4G coverage to arrive – yet a city like Kansas City gets 4G?  Really?

What exactly is the logic behind this Sprint?

Why are you holding back 4G coverage from larger metro areas here in the United States?

According to a representative I spoke to at a Sprint retail store in metro Atlanta, Sprint will be releasing their new, fully updated 4G coverage map at the following web address:

As it is now, the coverage area for 4G is widely debated amongst bloggers, and even Sprint employees. However, tomorrow hopefully ends the debate and we’ll see a nice, new updated 4G coverage map at Sprint.com.

HTC EVO 4G

From initial reviews, the HTC EVO 4G is a superior phone to the iPhone 3G. Even on only 3G connections, the HTC EVO 4G is said to actually out perform the iPhone.

Mathew Honan of wired.com said that the device did do far better with 3G than the Apple iPhone. Honan used the smartphone at three different locations in San Francisco where AT&T’s network is not very strong. HTC Evo 4G worked well in the places, where the iPhone failed to make call.

The phone has a giant 4.3-inch display, which is much bigger than the iPhone and Nexus One. It has two cameras, an 8-megapixel camera (with flash) on the rear and a 1.3-megapixel camera with sensor in front. The dual-screen action will allow the users to take self-portrait and preview them as well. The camera can shoot 720p video.

Biggest HTC EVO 4G complaint

So far the biggest complain about the HTC EVO 4G has simply been the lack of 4G coverage. However, Sprint is looking to be the leader in the 4G coverage market as they look to expand their current 4G coverage areas.

After putting together a list of Sprint 4G coverage areas yesterday, and from the feedback in the comments of that article, I had the urge to give Sprint a call to learn more about their 4G coverage maps. Specifically, I wanted to know why their website didn’t have a comprehensive, easy to read, and easy to view map of their 4G coverage areas.

So I called up a local Sprint retailer here in the city I live in to ask them about the Sprint 4G coverage map, and here’s what he said.

When I asked the Sprint rep where in the world is their current 4G coverage map, he said that the map on Sprint.com is obviously outdated. He also said that Sprint realizes their need for a comprehensive 4G coverage map and that their new update 4G coverage map will be coming out June 1st.
