He has not given a date neither said that a tablet is in works. Chen said that Blackberry tablet is ‘on his mind’ and you could expect a tablet in the coming months. But many experts think that Blackberry is far from launching a new tablet, especially at this time when the tablet market is on the decline.

The tablet sales have plummeted across the globe. On the other hand, Blackberry has less than 1% market share. Its smartphone have failed to imbibe the customer base. Blackberry still has the small, targeted, productivity focused Enterprise customers, which make up a negligible amount of market.

Blackberry revealed its new touch phone, with slide-out keyboard and curved edges. The company hasn’t announced a launch date yet. Before this, Blackberry launched two new phones: Blackberry Classic and Blackberry Passport.

Blackberry Passport is a phablet, with an enormous size and some impressive features, but so far, the sales have not elevated.

Blackberry has tried its luck in the table business some year ago when it launched Blackberry PlayBook. It was a failure and quickly went to the bin.

For the year 2015, Blackberry is set to focus on new smartphones. It is going to release the slider BlackBerry phone which has not a name yet; there will be Blackberry Leap device and a Classic style phone with keyboard.

On Friday, Sprint released a statement saying they will no longer be releasing a WiMax version of the Blackberry Playbook – RIM’s attempt to enter the explosive tablet marketplace.

“We apologize for any inconvenience but the BlackBerry 4G PlayBook Tablet that was announced in January for summer availability will no longer be coming to the Sprint network,” Sprint said in a statement.

Sprint currently offers a WiFi only version of the Blackberry Playbook which, if connection to Sprint’s Mifi, could actually access Sprint’s WiMax network, but that is certainly a round-about way to go about it.

RIM, the maker of the Blackberry Playbook, said that instead, they will focus their development efforts on LTE, the 4G technology that is more widely adopted throughout the United States.

“RIM has decided to prioritize and focus its 4G development resources on LTE,” it said in a statement.

The operator currently offers a Wi-Fi-only version of the tablet. A customer could connect that device to a Wi-Fi hotspot that uses WiMax on the back end, such as the Mifi, and connect to Sprint’s WiMax network that way.

Sprint said it was a mutual decision between the operator and Sprint not to offer the WiMax PlayBook.

RIM said it will focus on LTE, the 4G technology more widely adopted, instead of WiMax. “RIM has decided to prioritize and focus its 4G development resources on LTE,” it said in a statement.

“Testing of BlackBerry 4G PlayBook models is already underway and we plan to enter labs for network certifications in the U.S. and other international markets this fall,” it said.

Major uphill battle ahead for the Blackberry Playbook

RIM is using the Blackberry Playbook as a way to enter the tablet market space. However, there are some serious shortcomings with the Blackberry Playbook that is going to make it difficult to compete.

First, the Blackberry Playbook does not have native apps to run on device. This means, users of the Playbook have to find other ways to access.

Second, something as simple as checking your email on the Blackberry Playbook requires that you hook up your Blackberry mobile phone to the tablet, and then proceed to check your email – something that sounds painfully cumbersome.

That’s right folks. Not just one billion total, or billion over a certain number of years. One billion smartphones (Android smartphones, iPhones, Blackberry smartphones, etc…) will be sold each and every year by 2016, according to IMS Research.

Here’s what their research had to say about smartphone sales and growth: Sales of smartphones will exceed 420 million devices in 2011, accounting for nearly 28 percent of the entire global handset market, according to IMS Research, the leading independent provider of market research and consultancy to the global electronics industry. With the introduction of more affordable “entry-level” smartphones, IMS Research predicts that annual sales will surpass one billion devices by the end of 2016, accounting for one of every two mobile handsets sold.

The number and magnitude of the smartphone marketplace is substantial, and something that is even hard to comprehend in our minds. Couple this with the growing level of mobile internet access, app purchases, and free apps available via platforms like iTunes and Android Market, and I believe we are aat the very beginning of a smartphone revolution globally.

What do you think about the fact that one billion smartphones could be sold each year by 2016? And what about the fact that smartphone sales will exceed 420 million devices by the end of this year (2011)?

Blackberry maker RIM continues to struggle to keep up in the fast moving smartphone space. The traditional “Blackberry” phone model is quickly being replaced by app heavy, touch display smartphones such as the iPhone and Android smartphones. And despite the changes in the mobile phone marketplace since 2007, RIM seems to have failed to make the necessary changes to the product design to keep up with customer demand.

Another area where RIM is seriously lacking is in the developer space – meaning Blackberry doesn’t have a substantial apps marketplace for their devices. The Blackberry Playbook is their attempt to enter the tablet market to compete with the iPad, but instead of focusing on their own apps marketplace, they’ve attempted to incorporate the Android marketplace. Something that is not working out well for them.

So with all of this, RIM is now having to cut 2,000 jobs, or 10% of their workforce, as they struggle to maintain profitability. Customers are simply moving away from Blackberry devices and purchasing Apple’s iPhone and Android smartphones instead.

With Blackberry still holding the number one slot for mobile phone market share in the United States, it’s almost hard to imagine that RIM, the maker of Blackberry, is actually starting to see declining growth at major U.S. carriers.

I have a friend at a major law firm in Houston who for ever, all of the attorney’s were wired into their IT network via Blackberry’s.

It would have been unheard of even a couple of years ago for them to switch over to another competing smartphone.

I remember when I first got an iPhone back in 2007, and I told my friend about it and how I thought his law firm should switch over to the iPhone (there was not Android phones yet…).

His response to me about his firm using the Blackberry was, and I quote, “our firm needs a phone for business, not to play video games…”

Wow! That’s was actually funny to me at the time.

And now here we are nearly three years later, and his law firm has, just last week, ditched their Blackberry devices and replaced them with Android smartphones.

My friend picked the Verizon Droid 2.

Blackberry shows declining growth at the end of 2010

This is a reflection of what’s happening overall in not only the smartphone marketspace, but also to Blackberry.

A recent chart shows that RIM’s Blackberry device started to decline toward the end of 2010 at Verizon.

Here’s the chart – check out Blackberry at Verizon (brown line):

Verizon is the biggest carrier of Android devices

It’s also interesting to note here that Verizon currently has the largest number of Android smartphone subscribers in the world.

And with Verizon’s aggressive marketing of the Android smartphone, and not the Blackberry, that Verizon sees a much brighter future in something other than the Blackberry.

I can’t really say that the Android device is Verizon’s sweet spot because now the Verizon iPhone is on it’s way.

And not to mention the Verizon iPad, and the fact that Verizon is now connecting the iPad to own data network, no longer requiring iPad owners the need to purchase the Verizon MiFi device so they can get the web outside of WiFi areas.

What’s the future of the Blackberry

So now we are left to look at Blackberry and one can only wonder – what is the future like for RIM and their Blackberry devices?

It’s clear that the Blackberry cannot compete with the high end smartphone marketplace – looking at the chart above proves that.

But is there a way that the Blackberry can find that could bring it back into growing marketshare?

One would think that with the Verizon iPhone coming next month (February), that there would be even more downward pressure on the Blackberry – at Verizon at least.

So that’s not really going to help RIM whatsoever.

Blackberry losing enterprise prominence

And with law firms like my friend’s making a sweeping change from Blackberry devices to Android smartphones, this means the Blackberry is losing the fight for enterprise domination.

The IT guys (or girls) at my friend’s law firm had absolutely not problem programming the Android phones to work with their servers and intranet.

So if the corporate world starts catching on to this, then I’m afraid that RIM is going to see continued trouble ahead for their precious Blackberry.

Really, it’s all about going social when it comes to new gadgets hitting the market. And RIM (Research in Motion, maker of Blackberry) is no exception to this rule.

With the arrival of the new Blackberry Bold 9780 come a new operating system called the Blackberry 6 OS. What’s interesting about Blackberry 6 is that it’s built using Webkit. And hey… guess what other mobile OS is built upon Webkit? You guessed it – Safari – Apple’s OS for the iPhone.

So Blackberry hasn’t created anything new out of thin air, but it (Blackberry) is starting to see the trend toward “social” via mobile devices and are upgrading their OS accordingly.

Read more about the Blackberry 6 operating system and Blackberry’s new 9780 smartphone here.

These reports are originating with analysts firm Jeffries & Co. who issued a note stating that the Blackberry Storm 3 is scheduled to be hit the market place at the end of November, according to their resources at RIM. The new Blackberry Storm 3, as you can see in the image above, is starting to take on an “iPhone shape”, representing RIM’s acknowledgement of how they fell behind the smartphone movement.

Also Wi-Fi calling won’t be available on all android handsets. And that it could come as an over-the-air update to enable the feature.

While you may be able to make calls over Wi-Fi with the T-Mobile G2, you won’t be able to use the handset as a Wi-Fi hotspot or tether with the G2. According to the site T-Mobile is aware that the feature is something that customers want. And the company is working on supporting Wi-Fi hotspot and tethering in the future. So if you want to use the phone’s data network to connect to the Internet you going to have to hack your T-Mobile G2.

If RIM (Blackberry maker) loses it’s grip on the corporate world, it would almost certainly be the “beginning of the end” for the Blackberry. Unless, of course, RIM can come up with something that can compete with the iPhone and other Android handsets.

Blackberry has reached a new milestone in the quest for keeping up with the likes of Apple and Android users. The Blackberry App World store has reached 10,000 apps. Now I know that’s only a tenth of the number of apps in the Android market, and a fraction of the apps available from Apple. But it’s worth noting and giving credit where credit is due.

So can Blackberry actually turn their brand around to where they are able to keep pace with the more data favored iPads, iPhones, and Android based mobile devices?

Time will tell, but 10,000 apps in the Blackberry World App store tells me that Blackberry is not about to lay down and give up.

Here’s a quick run down on the specs:

QWERTY flip device with a CDMA radio, Wi-Fi, GPS, 5 megapixel camera, 240×320 external display, 360×400 internal display, and optical trackpad for navigation.

The red-headed step child of the BlackBerry device family is launching relatively soon on Sprint (and probably Verizon), and we have got our hands on a nice overview of the product in case you had any unanswered questions. Quick recap? It’s a clamshell QWERTY flip device with a CDMA radio, Wi-Fi, GPS, 5 megapixel camera, 240×320 external display, 360×400 internal display, and optical trackpad for navigation. If you loved the Pearl Flip but hated the SureType keyboard, this might be a nice compromise, though it’s going to have to sit pretty low on the price scale for it to fly.

On August 1st it was reported that Dubai was making moves to shut down the Blackberry messaging service due to security concerns. India seems to be following suit with threats of shutting down the Blackberry service as well. The main concern here is that Blackberry text and email messaging services are highly encrypted, making it very difficult for government agencies to monitor transactions and communication.

According to the NYTimes, the decision could have significant implications for BlackBerry use in the Persian Gulf region, where Saudi Arabia has been closely studying the issue and may follow suit. Other countries, including Kuwait and Bahrain, have also raised concerns.

So is this the end of Blackberry messaging services as we know it?

Even though the Blackberry currently holds the largest market share in the mobile phone market, with entire countries banning the Blackberry device and messaging services, it won’t take long for Blackberry to find themselves in a very hard spot.

Thoughts?

People are reporting that the AT&T wireless website went down last night – did you notice? When people visited the AT&T wireless site, they were greeted with the following message:

For those of you who want a faster, easier way to spend a lot of money on fast food, all without having to leave the comfort of your home, then Seemless Web is about to be your best friend.

Seemless Web just launched a new mobile app for the iPhone and Blackberry devices.

Seemless Web for Android devices is coming soon.

Here’s a recap from iTunes:

Place orders for delivery or takeout from the full menus of restaurants in your area using your iPhone or iPod Touch. With SeamlessWeb’s free app [Beta] you can order food from restaurants in New York City (Manhattan, Queens, Brooklyn), New York Metro (Hoboken, Jersey City, Stamford, Greenwich), Washington DC, DC Metro (Arlington, Bethesda, Chevy Chase), and select areas within San Francisco, Chicago, Boston, Philadelphia, and Los Angeles. No fees, no cash, no hassle—just the simple, easy ordering you’ve always enjoyed online at SeamlessWeb.com.

How Seemless Web works:

Use your GPS location or your address to browse restaurants in your area. Select a restaurant, customize and add menu items to your order, and check out using your personal credit card—no cash required! Your order is instantly transmitted to the restaurant, which then prepares your meal for delivery or pickup.

Seemless Web for the iPad

Although the Seemless Web website doesn’t mention the iPad, I’m assuming that app from iTunes will work just as well on the iPad as it will on the iPhone.

Does anyone have more info about Seemless Web working on the iPad?

If the app isn’t yet compatible for the iPad, I’m sure it’s only a matter of time before we see Seemless Web come to the ipad.

So what do you think about Seemless Web launching their own apps for iPhone, Blackberry, and Android (coming soon).

Read more about Seemless Web here.

The official Blackberry blog has a new article written by the senior product manager responsible for browser development on BlackBerry 6.

The new Blackberry 6 web browser is built up the open source WebKit platform. This is the same platform that Apple uses to build the Safari browser. So the new web browser experience should be dramatically enhanced on the new Blackberry 6 enabled devices.

Blackberry 6 web browser is designed to streamline processes that otherwise require multiple steps on a standard desktop browser.

According to the Blackberry 6 web development team, “unlike the desktop experience in which browsing sessions are usually less frequent but fairly long in duration, mobile browsing sessions are frequent, short, and focused. In most instances, users open their browser with a specific site in mind; therefore, enabling quick access to that site is critical. In BlackBerry 6, we have streamlined the BlackBerry Browser start page and implemented a single URL and search entry box to make sure users can get to websites quickly.”

Can the Blackpad compete against the iPad?

Blackberry is ready to jump in on the explosive tablet market. However, RIM (maker of Blackberry) is already under intense pressure from investors because they have yet to show signs of competing in the touchscreen space. Of course, Apple’s iPad has exploded onto the scene forcing nearly all major mobile phone manufacturers to start producing their own tablet device.

So Blackberry is gearing up with what is said to be called the Blackpad.

Blackberry has already acquired the domain Blackpad.com, which is a good indication of what’s to come.

Sources say that Blackberry is expecting the Blackpad to be out by November 2010, and that “the device will have roughly the same dimensions as the iPad, which has a 9.7-inch diagonal screen, said the two people who wouldn’t be identified because the plans haven’t been made public. The device will include Wi-Fi and Bluetooth wireless technology that will allow people to connect to the Internet through their BlackBerry smartphones, the two people said.”

One feature that may give the Blackpad an advantage over the iPad – at least initially – is a rumored camera on both sides of the device. This indicates that video conferencing will be possible on the Blackpad – something the iPad has yet to deliver.

So can RIM answer the iPad with their own Blackpad device and actually compete?

Or is RIM, along with their coveted Blackberry, on their way out the door?

The Blackberry Curve 9300 supposedly supports tri-band CDMA including AWS, which would mean support for some carriers such as MetroPCS. Some folks have pointed out that it could possibly be an AWS CDMA version of the 8500 series.

Blackberry has been struggling to keep up with the growing market share of other data phones such as the iPhone and Google Android powered devices.

Blackberry has a strong hold on enterprise clients since they were early adopters of email push mobile phones.

NPD numbers from March show that Blackberry is more likely to lose market share from Android then other companies. Since Google’s next version of their mobile operating system Android 2.2 aka froyo. Has a lot of features that business & enterprise customers are looking for, such as remote wipe, auto-discovery & Microsoft Exchange support and many other enterprise features that were shown off during Google I/O. More and more small & large business are using Google Applications such as Google Talk for their messaging needs.

It seems using Google’s Android operating system would be a logical choice for companies. Once business move away from Microsoft Exchange & Lotus Notes to Google’s could-based services, companies switching from Blackberry to Android based handsets would be much easier. With the Samsung Galaxy Q a QWERTY keyboard based Android phone that will be directly marketed toward Blackberry users.

According to a report by the Korea Times the Samsung Galaxy Q is directly targeted at the BlackBerry manufacture Canada’s Research In Motion. The Korea Times source stated “ It is Expected the Galaxy Q will pave the way for Samsung to eat up more shares in QWERTY smartphones in North America, where the Canadian company is leading the way”

According to Chiquita research Android is most popular on the Motorola Droid sold by Verizon Wireless. Which features a slide out QWERTY keyboard unlike the Blackberry, which has a fixed QWERTY keyboard. According to an email of a press event the Droid 2 is expected to be available June 23rd.

You can argue that Google’s Android OS is only an operating system and not a mobile phone, so it’s not a threat to data phones like the iPhone and Blackberry, all you want – the reality is that Android is having a tremendous impact on the mobile phone industry.

And you can argue that it’s not fair to compare Android, that spans multiple mobile devices to devices like the iPhone – but the reality is that the iPhone is losing market share because of Google’s Android OS.

iPhone Scoop is reporting that according to the same report that shows quarterly sales reports; the Apple iPhone’s have been left way behind with these devices that use the Google Android OS and that Android has stirred the mobile phone market and has superseded Apple in the number two position among the Smartphone Operating Systems.

Standing at second place the Google Android is now with a share of 28 percent and this is only behind the Blackberry that is at 36%. Apple only stands a little behind at 21 %.

This data shows that regardless of how you spin the argument, Google’s Android OS is having a tremendous impact on the mobile phone industry by stealing market share from prominent data phone leaders.

What are you going to say when Android devices take the number one spot away from Blackberry? Blackberry runs their OS across multiple devices just like Android. In fact, it’s because of this that Blackberry is able to say they have the #1 market share for mobile devices.

So really Android is just taking a play right from the Blackberry playbook – creating an operating system that multiple mobile devices can run on. Except that Google’s Android OS (and Google) had a much wider vision for their operating system.

The web is buzzing right now over the news about the Blackberry possibly jumping into the tablet device market and competing directly against Apple’s iPad. These rumors have been substantiated with multiple sources include BGR who broke the news on May 13th.

The RIM team working on the Blackberry tablet are supposed trying to get the device out and into the marketplace by December, just in time for Christmas. However, the team would like to have it out a lot sooner than that if possible.

Here’s what BGR reported:

We have confirmed with multiple sources that the 8.9″ BlackBerry tablet will be strictly a “companion” device. If you are wondering what it is all about, take a good hard look at the Palm Foleo. Yes, the BlackBerry tablet will not have any cellular networking built in, and will rely on either a Bluetooth connection to your BlackBerry or the built-in Wi-Fi radio. Additionally, we are hearing that the launch of the tablet is slated for December, but the team working on the project is trying to get it out to the marketplace sooner than that. Lastly, the focus of the device is said to be multimedia — think e-books, emailing, web browsing, photo viewing.

So what do you think?

Do you think that Blackberry even needs a “companion” device to the Blackberry? I don’t…

Why doesn’t Blackberry start producing mobile phones that are touch screen based, powered by lots of applications, and are capable of 3G web speed. I mean, isn’t that really what the market wants these days?

In fact, by the time Blackberry get’s around to catching up to the mobile data phone market, 4G is going to be here.

Well, with the leaked image of Android 2.2 having Wi-Fi Hotspot & USB tethering features. These features could be what T-Mobile could use, according to BGR T-Mobile will be testing Android handsets to use UMA calling in Q3 of this year. For those of you that don’t know what UMA is it’s Unlicensed Mobile Access. This technology will allow for phones that are UMA capable to seamlessly switch back & forth between cell networks and open wi-fi access points. Which will allow you to make calls over wi-fi & switch to wi-fi calling if you come across and open wi-fi network. Considering T-Mobile was the first cellular company to have UMA with their Blackberry line. I have often wondered why they didn’t already included it in their Android line.

BoyGeniusReport has received an insider view of the new Blackberry Bold 9800 Slider. The inside view came with a 14 second video that gives us all a glimpse at the upcoming Blackberry Bold 9800.

Here’s what BoyGeniusReport had to say about it:

One of our BlackBerry connects sent us in a nice treat a little while ago… it is the first ever live video of the mythical BlackBerry Bold sliding device coming out of Waterloo. The quality of the video is also decently clear, so check it out, okay? We’re still trying to confirm the model number of the handset, but it’s definitely in the Bold lineup as has been rumored, and now confirmed via the branding on the back of the phone. Oh, the device is also running OS 6.0. Video is after the break!

So here ya’ go – check out the new Blackberry Bold 9800 Slider video:

So what do you think?

Do you think that Blackberry is making a good move by releasing a slider version of the Blackberry data phone?

Even though Blackberry currently dominates the mobile phone market place, I believe that data phones such as the iPhone, Droid phones, HTC’s, and the like are starting to build up momentum and redefining the mobile phone market.

There have been rumors of future iPhone releases being tailored more toward the enterprise client. And if the devices like the iPhone are designed with enterprise clients in mind, then I think the Blackberry will be faced with substantial long term problems.
