San Antonio, TX, United States – According to AHN sports reporter Nathan Smtih, the Valero Texas Open held at TPC San Antonio will give the long running competition a facelift.
Norman prepped the course with bunkers that may require a player to shoot the ball sideways or backwards.
The course also calls for accurate long drives. All of the holes are more than 200 yards with the 13th hole being able to be set at 245 yards. One of the most difficult holes is located at the 17th, which has a bunker located in the middle of the green.
Not only did the course change, but the Texas Open was moved to May instead of the long-standing October date.
After the first round the competitors got their first taste of the course, filled with 52 bunkers.
Matt Jones finished with a 6-under 66 after eagling on a par-5 14th. This gave him a stroke on Paul Stankowski.
J.B. Holmes, Charley Hoffman, Matt Weibring and Steve Lowery all sit two back.
Rookie Jeev Milka Singh posted a 4-over par 76 in the opening round. He has been suffering from what has been reported as tendonitis.
Only 37 players broke par on the first day. That is two strokes higher on average for the norm on the tour this year.
The beginning of the second round was postponed Friday until 7:10 a.m. Saturday morning due to rain. Second and third rounds will possibly be held Sunday but could be pushed to Monday is weather continues to not cooperate.
