How to Upgrade Your iPhone to IOS 6

1. It’s simple, go to settings > Wi-Fi and make sure you are connected
2. Now that you’re connected go to settings > General > Software Update > then download
3. You may want to be plugged into a power source or turn down your brightness like I did.  Good Luck!

iPhone / iPad  Errors After IOS 6 Upgrade?

I haven’t heard of any issues yet and my update is still downloading.  If I find anything strange I will definitely list it here.  Alternatively if you have an error after your iPHone IOS6 update, please list it below in the comments and we’ll see if there are others with the same issue and if there is a fix.

iOS 5 Error 3200 or “internal error” update issues?

It seems many user’s are getting Error 3200 when upgrading their iPhone’s to the new iOS 5 today.  Apple’s server is getting overloaded with customer’s with issues and can’t possibly get to all of the issues yet.  The iOS 5 error 3200 problem is the most common error stating that there is an “internal error”.  Some have tried updating 5-10 times with still no luck.  This reminds me of the problems I had when I tried upgrading my Macbook Pro’s Snow Leopard to Lion.  In my case it was actually some kind of a hardware conflict.  I ended up reverting to Snow Leopard and I’m back to running smooth.  I’m not sure what the fix is to the iOS5 update issue, but we’ll keep you updated in case you are one of the users who experienced this nightmare.

Problem/Error Free Upgrade to iOS 5 On My iPhone 4

I plugged my phone in and as usual, iTunes popped up and started syncing my iPhone.  After it was synced I clicked on the update button, which prompted me to update my iTunes.  After the update started it backed everything up again, installed the updates, then restarted the phone.  After my phone was restarted it restored it’s original backup.  The whole process took me around 45 to an hour to complete, with no iOS5 errors whatsoever (whew)!  Below are screenshots of the next steps after my update was complete.

These steps are quite simple but I thought it would be cool to show you the steps to update iOS5.

Right after I started to use the phone the home screen seemed a lot more crisp.  On the home screen you’ll immediately notice the new newsstand where you can purchase books.  You’ll also notice a new icon in the bottom that used to be called “iPod” and is now labeled “music”.

Not a huge difference, but I notice every little details since I design websites.  The toggle button shave a new and improved glossy appearance.

What’s so different?  My favorite updates have to do with the camera.  It’s easier to access and operate since you can now take pictures by pressing the side volume button rather than tap the screen.  This was a simple solution I was looking for a while ago after tapping the screen and messing up a few good pictures.  I haven’t gone over all of the features yet but I’ll be posting updates here when I come across more features.

Messages with iMessage

Now you can text it up with fellow iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch users running iOS 5. Messages with iMessage are unlimited.¹ And secure, too. Talk to all your friends or family at once with group messaging. See who’s reading with delivery and read receipts. And if words aren’t enough, send photos, videos, locations, and contacts.

Reminders

You’ll never miss an important deadline, errand, or grocery item thanks to Reminders. Create lists of things to do that you can check off as you go. Even add due dates and locations — pick up mustard at the store after work, for example. Reminders knows exactly when and where to send you an alert.

Photos

Touch up photos right on your iPhone — without the help of photo editing software on a computer. Crop, rotate, enhance, and remove red-eye. Then organize your shots into albums, so you know exactly where your favorites are when the next photo-sharing opportunity presents itself.

Camera Enhancements

Here’s a photo op for your photo ops. Now you can access the Camera app right from the Lock screen. Use grid lines and pinch-to-zoom gestures to get your shot just right. Focus with a tap. Then press the volume-up button and take your photo.

With all of the hype about a new model, updated screen size, different glass, different buttons, the iPhone 5 didn’t happen as everyone expected.  In fact, Apple release the second model of the iPhone 4, the iPhone 4S.  Similar to the second unveiling of the iPhone 3g to 3gs but in a grand fashion with tremendous hype. I guess the answer to our article, “Will the iPhone 5 be a flop” was finally answered.

Should I upgrade from my iPhone 4 to iPhone 4S?

There’s a simple answer to this question in my opinion.  After looking at the new features of the phone, I can’t justify myself paying to upgrade from my iPhone 4.  There are updates to the screen resolution, camera, and video, but other than that it’s not very impressive.  Hopefully the next version of the iPhone is actually an iPhone 5 (completely new model)!

Real Wood Back for iPhone 5 Coming Soon

JackBack’s already mentions they’re working on the iPhone 5 wooden case:

Gizmodo reports that the iPhone 5 is just weeks away.  Here at JackBacks we believe that the new design will sport a large 4 in screen, elongated home button, super thin 7mm profile, and teardrop design.  We’re not 100% sure on these design changes but are fairly confident that iPhone 5 will not be Back Replacement friendly.  Not to worry though, We recently got our hands on a few Chinese knock off cases and have been working on full Bamboo Case designs as well as real wood stick on skins.   Looks like October 4th we’ll get the see the real deal.

Pictures of Wooden iPhone 4 Backs

It’s almost hard to believe, but here we are in the middle of August and we don’t even have the iPhone 5 available to purchase.  Yet despite the current scenario, it is like that before 2011 comes to an end we will see Apple selling nearly 26 million iPhone 5 devices.

According to MacRumors, the projections for iPhone 5 orders for the 3rd quarter (July, Aug, Sept) have been decreased from 7 million units to 5.5-6 million units while the 4th quarter (Oct, Nov, Dec) orders have been raised from 14 million units to more then 20 million units. Meanwhile, iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4 unit shipments will decline correspondingly from over 20 million in the 3rd quarter to 8 million in the 4th quarter.

The Apple iPhone 5 is ramping up to be the most successful iPhone launch in history.  And as it typically the case, we can expect to see long lines, fast sell outs of supply, and nothing short of frenzy unfolding as people make the mad dash to pick up the hot new iPhone 5.

Remember the iPhone 4?

Wait… even more ancient, the days before the iPhone 4 were launched?

In tech years, that’s like a lifetime ago.  But in those historic days (around March 2010, less than 1.5 years ago), do you remember when Gizmodo purchased an iPhone 4 prototype?  Well, finally, the California district attorney’s office has decided to not press charges against Gizmodo or Jason Chen, the former Gizmodo editor who purchased and then posted a video of the iPhone 4 prototype.

“We are pleased that the District Attorney of San Mateo County, Steven Wagstaffe, has decided, upon review of all of the evidence, that no crime was committed by the Gizmodo team in relation to its reporting on the iPhone 4 prototype last year. While we have always believed that we were acting fully within the law, it has inevitably been stressful for the editor concerned, Jason Chen, and we are glad that we can finally put this matter behind us.”

Leaked iPhone 5 image turns out to be fake.

Whew… the excitement and tension building up to the iPhone 5 is getting thick.  Today, someone posted an image on MacRumors who claimed the image was a leaked photo of Apple’s next generation iPhone, the iPhone 5.

The new iPhone, according to the user on MacRumor, was much thinner in design and much faster than the current iPhone 4.

Unfortunately, according to a tweet update here, the image was actually a fake.

More than likely, the fake image is coming straight out of China where there’s been other fake images, and even a fake video (see below), of the Apple iPhone 5.

However, with the iPhone 5 fakes all looking very similar, we have to wonder if someone out there doesn’t actually have a leaked version of the device and is already building the fake models for the iPhone black market in China.

A new report coming out of China today verifies that just one, but two iPhones are set to launch in country sometime October.

The report is claiming to have verified that China Telecom, the world’s largest cellular phone company, has reached a preliminary deal with Apple to begin selling two versions of the iPhone – the new iPhone 5, and a what’s being called a simplified iPhone 4.

What’s a simplified iPhone 4, you ask?

According to the report, a simplified iPhone 4 is a stripped down iPhone that cost less, and allows for more people in China to be able to afford the iPhone.

AllThingsD, who originally broke the story, puts it like this:

“According to Sohu.com, China Telecom will offer two types of iPhone that include the iPhone 5 and a ‘simplified iPhone 4,’” says White. “Essentially, this potential ‘simplified iPhone 4′ would be a more economical version of iPhone to target a broader customer base in developing countries such as China, allowing for an expanded market opportunity.”

Lowell explained in a conference call that because Apple has been slow in bringing the iPhone 5, to replace the iPhone 4, that is why AT&T is still leading in iPhone sales.

When Verizon started selling the iPhone in February, all the talk was about how disgruntled AT&T customers were going to jump ship and head over to Verizon.

Well that just hasn’t happened.

In the 2nd quarter, Verizon’s iPhone sales trailed AT&T’s and fell short of Wall Street expectations.

Verizon activated 2.3 million iPhone 4’s compared to AT&T’s 3.6 million iPhones.

The AT&T iPhone sale figure is likely to increase dramatically with the new pricing discounts on refurbished iPhone 3GS’s.

Looks like Verizon needs to step up the game a bit to compete with AT&T in the iPhone market.

Right on the heels of the news that AT&T is slashing the prices on iPhone 3’s to clear out inventory for the coming iPhone 5, there is now news out that Verizon is following suit.  Except this interesting twist from Verizon Wireless involves the dumping of iPhone 4 accessories and iPhone 4 accessory bundles.

Of course clearing out iPhone inventory – both iPhone 3 and 4 devices and accessories – seems logical in order to make room for the coming iPhone 5. But what’s interesting is when looked at a little deeper, you realize that if Verizon Wireless is dumping iPhone 4 accessories then we must know that the Apple iPhone 5 is going to have a different shape and design.

There’s been talk before about the iPhone 5 being thinner and lighter than the iPhone 4.  And with Verizon Wireless dumping their accessory bundles, this seems even more logical.

If all of the iPhone 5 rumors are true, and the release date is somewhere around September, then you can expect to see a lot more dumping of older iPhone devices and accessories – especially if the iPhone 5’s design is dramatically different than all previous models.

Wait a minute, did you just read that title right?  Did it really just say that AT&T is selling the iPhone 3 for only $9?

AT&T is slashing the prices of refurbished iPhone 3’s and selling them online for only $9.  It gets better than that actually, you can get slightly blemished refurb’d iPhone 3’s for as low as $.01.  You can definitely expect the iPhone 4 to soon follow suit.  The iPhone 4 is currently selling for only $199 – and a white iPhone 4 to boot.

So what’s all this dumping of iPhone inventory all about anyway?  Well folks, there’s only one logical reason and that’s to make way for the new Apple iPhone 5.

The iPhone 5 is expected to hit the shelves at AT&T and Verizon sometime in September, according to most rumors that are out there.  And Apple needs the iPhone 5 to sell, and sell in large scale.

So for now, AT&T is dumping their inventory of what’s now considered old iPhone’s to make way for the new.  Are you going to be picking up with of these dramatically discounted iPhone 3’s?

A chart was released today from BI that indicates developers are starting to eject from the Android platform, and sail into more profitable waters with iOS.

The new iPhone 4, and the rumored iPhone 5 and iPad 3 (or iPad HD), along with the current mega-popularity of the iPad, is causing developers to second guess the value of sticking with Android.

This is all happening despite Android smartphone users actually gaining a larger market share of users than iPhone users.

The iPad is probably one of the biggest difference makers in the whole equation. Although Android smartphones are competing with the iPhone, it’s pretty safe to say that nothing is currently competing with the iPad.

Well, that hasn’t stopped the Verizon iPhone 4 from exploding in popularity and also stealing – or I should say eating away – at AT&T’s iPhone 4 marketshare.

Take a look at the charts below.  What you’ll see is that after only 4 months, Verizon’s iPhone 4 marketshare has spiked to a whopping 32%, while AT&T’s iPhone 4 marketshare is in a steady decline.

People are obviously ready to pay a premium to get their hands on a piece of history, especially something as historic as a prototype iPhone 4.

That’s right, over the weekend there was a prototype iPhone 4 for sale on Ebay.

The device was used by Apple during the testing phase of the iPhone 4 prior to launch.

The iPhone 4 prototype was being sold “as is”, could not be activated via iTunes, and had manufacturing numbers in the lower right hand corner that read “DF1692”.

Also missing were the “+” and “-” markers on the volume controller.

The bid, according to Mashable, reached as high as $2,025 as of yesterday, July 4th.

But when I visited the iPhone 4 prototype listing this morning, I got the following message:

Not sure what happened exactly between yesterday and today, but the iPhone 4 prototype is no longer available and has been removed.

No reason given as to why it was removed, nor anything on who removed it.

About an hour or so ago, I wrote about the speculation that we could be seeing two iPhones coming from Apple this year – the iPhone 4s and the iPhone 5.  Now the speculation has actually advanced to where we are getting release dates for the two iPhones, and this coming from a credible source – Forbes.com.  Forbes writes that on Monday, Deutsche Bank’s Chris Whitmore is telling clients to expect both — an iPhone 5 and an iPhone 4S and that the expected release date is September.

There has been much debate about what Apple has in store for their next iPhone, with detailed information about the device being kept tightly under wraps.

As the usual June/July release date has been pushed back in time for the release of iOS 5 in September, this is one feature that can be taken for granted with most other things just being speculation.

There have been conflicting rumours of a larger screen and yet a smaller phone, and with the name of the device not yet confirmed to be the iPhone 5 or the iPhone 4S.

While some had suggested the name of the iPhone 4S in lieu of the fact that this next Apple phone might not mark a huge shift in design from the iPhone 4, there are now rumours floating about that there will in fact be two Apple phones released in September with the iPhone 5 being the main affair and a smaller iPhone 4S being the rumoured ‘iPhone Nano’.

The claim of two new Apple phones comes from an unlikely source, Chris Whitmore of Deutsche Bank, who claims that the smaller Apple phone will be released to try and capitalise on Nokia and BlackBerry’s falling market share in the lower end of the market.

These rumours have already been floating around for some time but considering the iPhone’s position as a premium priced status symbol it is unlikely that a scaled down iPhone will be as cheap as the more basic handsets.

In other news, Samsung has just dropped the price of its Galaxy SII with more rumours speculating that this is in preparation for a newer flagship handset.

Considering the popularity of the Galaxy SII (which has been the first phone in a year to knock the iPhone 4 from the number 1 spot of bestselling phones) this could indeed indicate that Samsung is preparing a new rival for the next iPhone.

Here in the US, the white iPhone 4 was met with a lack lusture response in both sales, frenzied lines, and fast sell outs.

But don’t use the U.S. demand for the white iPhone 4 as the gauge for global demand for the device.

Word is in China that the white iPhone 4 was met with the “A-Typical” long lines, sell out crowds, and fast sell outs that are common with Apple releases.

According to the Wall Street Journal, Apple analysts have been quoted as saying “internationally there seemed to be higher demand with lines forming in markets such as Hong Kong, Singapore and China,” said Ben Reitzes, Barclays Capital.

And another analyst, Brian White from Ticonderoga Securities says, “Our checks this morning indicate that the four Apple stores in China have already sold out of the “white” iPhone 4. Recall, we indicated in a note yesterday that Hong Kong sold out of the “white” iPhone 4 in just one hour based on an article from ElegentTech.com. Clearly, the “white” iPhone 4 is very popular in China, and we believe this is a phenomenon that Apple will experience across most of Asia, including Japan.”

When the white iPhone 4 was released world wide last week, there was one thing missing from a typical Apple release…

Crazed fans and long lines!

This lack of enthusiasm for the white iPhone 4 could be understood, I suppose.  But it leaves me wondering what to expect from Apple fans when the iPhone 5 is finally released?  And rumors have it that not only will there be an iPhone 5, but also an iPhone 5 pro version.

The lack of lines with the white iPhone 4 could easily be attributed to the fact that:

1) the iPhone 4 version has already been on the market for quite some time now

2) people may have just tired from the drama surrounding the white iPhone 4

3) maybe people were just upset initially simply because they didn’t have the option to buy a white iPhone 4, not necessarily because they wanted the white iPhone 4

Or the other problem could just be that the craze surrounding the iPhone is starting to fizzle!

I hate to say that – heck, I hate to even think that – but I cant’ help but wonder what people are thinking now, and how the masses will receive the new iPhone 5.

The other huge lag on the iPhone right now are all the Android smartphones.

Android smartphones actually now have a larger marketshare than the iPhone. Which is not good for Apple, especially with new iPhones coming out that really aren’t too dramatic of an upgrade from the previous version.

Verizon is taking steps to get ahead of the new drama and legal action surrounding location tracking with smartphones like the iPhone and Android smartphones. In a letter to congress, Verizon spelled out details on its tracking methods, why it tracks, how it uses the data, and the purposes behind the use. It all makes sense, actually – I mean, how in the world did you think your Google Maps app actually worked?  Regardless, Verizon will now be placing a huge, ridiculous looking sticker on iPhones that customers will have to remove.  Again, this is Verizon trying to hedge against any potential litigation that could be heading its way.

The elusive, and massively anticipated white iPhone 4 is finally coming – and sooner than you think!  In fact, the white iPhone 4 is scheduled to hit the shelves tomorrow, Thursday, April 28th. The white iPhone 4 is slated to arrive at Apple.com, Apple stores, authorized Apple resellers, AT&T and Verizon stores Thursday. So if you’ve been waiting for a white iPhone 4, now is your chance.  And in pure Apple fashion, we can expect ridiculously long lines, and the white iPhone 4’s to fly off the shelves and stores 100% cleared of inventory within hours.

So will you be standing in line at one of these stores tomorrow?

Breaking news from Bloomberg – somehow there’s been a breakthrough in the white iPhone 4 distribution chain and apparently Apple will be releasing the white iPhone 4 within the next few weeks.

The new white iPhone 4 will be available from AT&T and Verizon Wireless by the end of April, said one of the people close to the matter who requested to remain unidentified because these plans aren’t public.

Again, by the end of April, AT&T and Verizon Wireless will be selling the white iPhone 4!

Is this just another rumor gone mad, or has Bloomberg received solid information?

Apple’s senior VP of worldwide product marketing Phil Schiller (yes, we now have a name to pin to this leak) replied to a question via Twitter about the availability of the white iPhone.  His tweet was plain as day, with no room for interpretation:  “the white iPhone will be available this spring (and it is a beauty!)”.  Heck, Mr. Schiller even added his own little plug to the end of his tweet saying and it is a beauty!. The only outstanding question at this point is whether the next white iPhone will be the iPhone 4, or will Apple simply skip ahead to the iPhone 5 with the release? [via Gizmodo]

Verizon’s new iPhone 4 commercial, and their first, has been uploaded to the YouTube channel earlier today.

The interesting spin on this commercial is that it is not attacking AT&T, like you’d probably think it would.

Instead, Verizon’s theme of the commercial is “Two is better than one”.

The “two is better than one” concept shows that even though Apple is ready to move on from the exclusivity of AT&T, it still recognizes the critical role that AT&T plays in the sales and growth of the iPhone.

Is the Verizon iPhone 4 imminent?

If I had to picked one question I’ve been asked by readers of SMSEO more than any other over the past 3 months is, “when do you think Verizon will release an iPhone?”

It’s clear that people are ready to pick up a Verizon iPhone.

In fact, a recent survey shows that nearly half of all AT&T iPhone users would jump ship (bail on AT&T) and switch over to Verizon when / if Verizon did ever release an iPhone – here’s the graph from MacRumors showing the stats:

Quoting anonymous sources, Digitimes reports that there is a shipment goal of 5 million to 6 million CDMA iPhones to be shipped to North America and Asia Pacific in the first three months of next year. Unlike AT&T’s GSM cellular network, Verizon’s network is CDMA. (source: Mashable)

Exactly when we’ll see a Verizon iPhone is something that nobody knows, but the evidence is certainly building that Verizon will be launching their CDMA iPhone 4 very soon.

Apple spokeswoman Trudy Muller said on Tuesday that the white iPhone 4 release would be delayed until next spring. Apple recently stated that we could expect the white iPhone 4 by the end of this year. But with no explanation as to “why”, Apple has delayed the white iPhone 4 release again – this time all the way out the spring of 2011. “We’re sorry to disappoint customers waiting for the white iPhone again,” Apple spokeswoman Trudy Muller. She declined to explain the delay.

I’m not quite sure how old this webpage is, but this is no doubt Wal Mart’s White iPhone 4 sales page. There are comments at the bottom that date back to July and August, if that’s any indication. However, the fact that Wal Mart is still promoting the white iPhone 4 would be a good reason to believe that is it coming soon. Wal Mart is not the type of company that would be wasting bandwidth with a dead-end page.

Here’s the title that Wal Mart uses for their white iPhone 4 page:

COMING SOON, Apple iPhone 4 16GB, White (Phone price based on new line activation or eligible upgrade with 2-year contract)

So what do you think? Is Wal Mart preparing itself for the arrival of the white iPhone 4? Or is this just a page Wal Mart built in anticipation of the arrival of the white iPhone 4 back in the summer, but just left it up for when that time does come?

After all, the white iPhone 4 was expected back in August, 2010.

Now that we have the iPhone 4 antenna drama seemingly behind us, it’s time to start focusing on the next iteration of Apple’s iPhone – the iPhone 5. Tentative release dates for the iPhone 5 is July 2011, and this release could be coming directly from Verizon. What’s great about the next version of the iPhone is that it may no longer be restricted to the AT&T.  Verizon is already testing their CDMA network for both the iPhone. The next version of the iPhone will more than likely be called iPhone 5. Unless, of course, we get an iPhone 4G and an iPhone 4GS first. The most popular feature that people would be looking for on the iPhone 5 would be a 4G wireless connection. Although Sprint has been aggressively pursuing the 4G market, I don’t think it will take long for Verizon to trump Sprint in their expansion efforts, which would then allow a 4G enabled iPhone to dominate the mobile phone market.

Multi-tasking on the iPhone has been around since April 8th of this year (2010) when Apple released the iOS 4 update. The update is only available to iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4 owners – sorry iPhone 3G’ers.

So if you own an iPhone 3GS or iPhone 4, then here’s how you multi-task from your device.

Go ahead and open an application on your iPhone – i.e. email, Safari web browser, iPod, a video game – and while it’s open, double click the circular home button on the bottom of the iPhone.

Once you double click the circular home button, then you’ll see the bottom of your iPhone screen pop up with a row of most recently, or most actively, used apps from your iPhone.

Then, as you click one of the apps from the pop up screen, you’ll then be taken to that application.

Multi-tasking works great if you are in the middle of reading emails, or playing an iPhone game, and then you suddenly need to make a call.

About a week ago, I posted an article that claimed an email was sent by Steve Jobs to a high school kid  stating that the white iPhone 4 would be here by Christmas. Unfortunately, that email (and the story) turned out to be fake. What’s interesting, at least in the realm of keeping the white iPhone 4 discussion alive an active on the web, is that in someone posted a comment here that said the following:

Hey Sebastien,
The boy’s lie somewhat came true. I’m from Singapore and a close friend of mine works with a Telco company here as an iPhone 4 agent. She posted on her shoutout sometime last week on her FB. Regarding that she’s taking pre-orders for the White iPhone 4 due in December!
I was surprised indeed.

So is this true, or just another fabricated white iPhone 4 story that people are throwing around? I would have to believe that if someone in Singapore was in fact taking pre-orders on white iPhone 4’s, then we’d hear about from more established resources than a random comment in a blog.
