The rapid coronavirus spreads is affecting the whole world. It emerged in China but over a few months it spread to other countries. The coronavirus pandemic put most countries under lockdown. So, borders are closed, and people are advised to practice self-quarantine and social distancing.
However, this crisis is hard for young students to handle, especially with the upcoming Spring break. Therefore, when students go on a two-week holiday and usually spend it having fun.
Coronavirus spreads on plane
About 70 people in their 20s chartered a plane from Austin, Texas, to Mexico for a two-week spring break. Despite the government’s advice to avoid gatherings in groups to reduce the coronavirus spreads.
44 of those people are positive for coronavirus, all of them from the University of Texas in Austin.
An elected official stated on CNN that this is a big issue, and everyone has an effect on the situation. Students should act consciously and limit their movements.
Public health officials said that other passengers from that flight are being monitored.
Dr. Mark Escott stated that the virus often hides in the healthy. And, it can be given to those who are at risk of being hospitalized or dying. Although young people are at lesser risk for complications, they are not immune from severe illness and death from COVID-19.
Measures taken and advice
University spokesman, J.B. Bird said the university is working closely with Austin Public Health to assist in contact tracing. The incident is a reminder of the vital importance of taking seriously the warnings of the health authorities on the risks of the coronavirus spreads.
Health officials say the students who tested positive are in self-isolation.
Furthermore, university president Gregory L. Fenves urged students to practice good judgement and think about how their actions can affect others.
Fenves stated that it is our responsibility to follow local, state and national public health orders. Therefore, we need to use good judgement during this crisis. The conduct and decisions made have direct ramifications on our own health and the health of everyone else.
Everyone needs to put a lot effort into stopping the coronavirus from spreading. The consequences of reckless actions at this time are very clear.
In that light, Mayor Steve Adler issued a stay-at-home order for Austin on March 24th. And, the United States announced plans on Match 19th to suspend nonessential travel between the two countries. Only because of the pandemic.
