GitHub, the largest online code repository used by millions around the world has reported that it is still facing distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks and the website is on ‘high alert’. Last week, GitHub went down after massive hacking attacks were launched on the largest coding repo. GitHub accepted that the recent attack is the largest and most sophisticated attack in Github’s history. The Twitter and Facebook pages of GitHub says that the current status and availability of GitHub website is 100%, but the admin of the repo is taking all necessary measures to avoid any outage, as the attacks are ongoing.

It is also reported by a number of news sources that the latest attacks on GitHub were launched by Chinese hackers. The hackers are continuing to evolve and improve their techniques, according to GitHub’s official statement. They are using redirection techniques from two of the most visited pages in China from the China’s search engine Baidu. The first page from where the traffic is being redirected is the New York Time’s Chinese news language pages, whereas the other one is Greatfire.org, an information website which tells about the government censorship in China.

The Wall Street Journal quotes some sources which are now claiming that the attacks are directly coming from the high-level official internet infrastructure within China, which points towards the speculation that the hacking attack is done by government-backed Chinese hackers. Baidu, the Chinese search engine has released a statement, denying the notion that its systems are being used in the GitHub DDos attack.

I’ve been asked a few times lately about how to change (or edit) the title of a Facebook Fan Page.

Fair question, because it wasn’t too terribly long ago (I’d say about 6 months ago) where, once you built your Facebook Fan Page > gave it a title > then published it, there was no changing it.

If you gave your page a title that you didn’t like, and then published that bad boy, your only option was to delete the page and start over.

Which would be fine for a page that is new and doesn’t have any fans yet.

But what about when your page isn’t new and it’s a couple months down the road and you think you need to edit (or change) the title of your Facebook Fan Page?

Limit on the number of fans to change / edit your Facebook Fan Page

First of all, you can’t do anything with the name or title of your Facebook Fan Page if you have 100 fans or more. Once you get to where you have 100 fans or more, you don’t have any other options for changing the title except to delete your page and start over.

But if I have at least 100 fans already, I don’t think deleting and starting over is a wise option, unless the the title is just so far out of whack that a change is necessary.

Then again, I would think you’d have noticed that before you reached 100 fans.

Anyway… I digress.

So assuming you have less than 100 fans on your Facebook Fan Page, I can now proceed to telling you how to change (or edit) your page title (or the name of your Facebook Fan Page.

What’s the name (or title) of my Facebook Fan Page anyway?

Great question – glad you asked.

The name (or title) of your Facebook Fan Page is the name you see directly to the right and to the top of your Facebook Fan Page logo. Here’s a screenshot of my Facebook Fan Page:

Why is your Facebook Fan Page name (or title) important?

Another great question!

The title (or name) of your Facebook Fan Page is important because it’s the equivalent of the <h1> tag on any other web page. And the <h1> tag is, from Google’s perspective, the most important and most relevant starting point for ranking pages in Google’s index.

And Facebook Fan Pages are indeed crawled, indexed, and ranked in Google search for specific keyword phrases.

Here’s my Facebook Fan Page in Google for keyword phrase “social media seo“:

Ok, so in case you didn’t know this yet. The blue part of the search results are pulled from what I was just referring to – the <h1> tags of the web pages.

And as you can see in the Google search results, the title (or name) of my Facebook Fan Page is in fact the <h1> tag of my Facebook Fan Page.

So that’s why this stuff is important ya’ll… it affects your presence and exposure in Google search results.

How to change the name / title of your Facebook Fan Page

Again, assuming you have 100 fans or less, here’s how to can change / edit your Facebook Fan Page name (or title):

1) From your Facebook Fan Page, click the “edit info” link at the very top of your Facebook Fan Page

2) Click “Basic Information” – it’s the link along the left hand side.

3) The fourth section down is called “Name:” – if you have less than 100 fans, you’ll be able to edit your page name (or title) here.

Hope that helps…

One of the greatest advancements in Facebook Fan Page customization was when Facebook deprecated the FBML app and allowed apps to be added to pages that utilized full HTML. This one single move opened up a whole new world of Facebook page customization and utilization.

However, one of the biggest complaints from developers – at least initially – was when the Facebook page app wasn’t quite right in either height or width and you’d get a scroll bar.

Well it seems that Facebook has resolved this issue for developers with ‘Fluid’.

Fluid is a new feature in the Facebook app’s height and width settings. Instead of checking a fixed width or “show scroll bar”, you can now select ‘Fluid’ and your app will adjust automatically to remove the scroll bars.

Let me know if you are using ‘Fluid’ and still have problems with your scroll bars.

A form of online marketing that is fast growing in popularity is Social Media, and in particular Facebook. The opportunities for leveraging Facebook, and integrating Facebook as a marketing tool are numerous.

It is certainly worthwhile taking the time, and putting in the work, to understand the potential that Facebook holds and capitalize on the opportunity.

Most new marketers on Facebook make a huge mistake by assuming that by posting just a few regurgitated wall updates is going to open up the flood gates of new fans and new opportunities for business.

My friends, that’s just not the case.

But there are some things you can do, some strategies to implement on a consistent basis, that will help you to grow your Facebook fan page. And when I say “grow” your Facebook page, I’m implying in more ways than just shear fans. A healthy Facebook page has a growing fan base, ongoing conversations, direct interaction from admins, and back tagging from other people and other Facebook pages.

Here are 5 proven steps that you can take, on a consistent basis, that will help you to “grow” your Facebook fan page:

1) Link to your Facebook from your site

This is easy to do, and an excellent way to promote the fact you have a Facebook page. Facebook is easier to update, and something new will keep potential customers always coming back to your Facebook page to see if anything has changed.

2) Add it to your marketing

A mention of your Facebook page on your marketing material is an easy way to entice people to visit your page. By including it in all forms of marketing, both online and offline (printed) material, your business is reaching a wider range of potential customers. It is also worthwhile adding it is a link to your signature for all email communication.

3) Keep your Facebook content fresh

Neglect is the worst thing that could be done to a Facebook page. Potential customers will quickly stop visiting if they see that nothing has changed the last few times they visited. New content will also see your Facebook page appear on others news feeds frequently, and help to get people’s attention and interest.

4) Keep in touch with your followers

If someone takes the time to comment or ask a question on your Facebook page, then take the time to reply or answer their question. This will start the possibility of further communication, but is also a nice way of showing that you are interested in what visitors to your Facebook page have to say.

5) Consider what you put on your Facebook page

Anything you put on the page should be interesting and help to draw potential customers in. Make sure they are interesting, and ultimately, make sure they don’t happen too often. At best, an update once or twice a week is viewed favourably, and doesn’t spam the news feeds of your potential customers and visitors.

6) Take advantage of Facebook tagging

By using the @ symbol in a status update, you can make mention of another page by typing their name. If the name doesn’t turn blue, then the page is not able to be tagged.

Tagging other pages helps promote their content. And by helping promote other people’s content, you will build brand recognition for your own Facebook page. I’m always aware, and always appreciative (which means I notice, recognize, and remember) those who have tagged my Facebook page in their own updates.

What about you?

What other proven methods are you using to promote your Facebook Fan Page?

Are there strategies that you’ve implemented that are proven to grow, promote, and increase the effectiveness of your Facebook Page?

With the new addition of the Facebook Fan Page iFrame tabs, a whole new world of customization and “brand ownership” has opened up to businesses.

Not only are brands able to build highly customizable Facebook tabs out of pure HTML, javascript, and CSS, but you can now brand your tab with a cool little web icon.

With the old FBML apps for your Facebook page, you were restricted to that dull, boring web icon for your custom tab. This is the small, gray icon that showed up underneath your Facebook page logo in the tab navigation section.

But with iFrame tabs, you can fully customize your tab’s web icon so your Facebook Fan Page starts to take on more of a “website” navigational feel, and gives you – the brand – the ability to fully own and customize your Facebook pages.

The way you add a customize web icon to your Facebook iFrame tab is as follows:

1) Login to Facebook

2) go to your iFrame app (located in your Facebook developers section)

3) click “edit settings”

4) in the middle of the next section you’ll see the “icon” and the “logo” – the “icon is the image that controls what shows up in navigation section on your Facebook Fan Page.

Here’s an example of a Facebook page where I customized each iFrame tab currently running:

The only criteria for your Facebook iFrame tab icon is that it needs to be 16×16 pixels in size.

As you can see above in the image, I set a custom web icon that relates to the content located on each of those custom iframe tabs.

This will help you personalize your Facebook Fan Page and build your own unique brand on Facebook.

Don’t underestimate the power of having a web icon for each of your Facebook page iFrame apps.

I just added a new app to my Facebook Page and to be honest with you, I’m not sure what the app is called technically, but it’s the app that allows you to invite your friends to a Facebook Fan Page by simply clicking on their images or typing in their names.

In fact, this “Facebook Invite” app will allow you to invite up to 40 people to my Facebook page – or your Facebook page if you had it running.

I’ve seen it running on previous Facebook pages, like on the the hugely popular Manchester United Football (soccer) page.

There’s one huge difference though between their page and mine – when I added the app via the Facebook iFrame app integration, it’s allowing me to invite up to 40 people at once – the Manchester invite app says that you can only invite up to 16 people at once.

So my Facebook invite app is nearly four times more productive than their’s – which would be great if it would allow my Facebook page to grow to even a fourth of what their’s is (currently they have 11.2 million fans!).

Here’s how I added the Facebook Invite app to my Facebook page:

I first followed the basic steps of creating a Facebook iFrame tab for your Facebook Fan Page.

Under the “Facebook Integration” > Page Tabs – I clicked “FBML” instead of “iFrame”.

And then in the html file, I added the follow FBML snippet:

<fb:request-form

method=”post”

action=”https://fb.me/Social.Media.SEO.Blog”

type=”SMSEO”

invite=”true”

content=”Connect with smseo”

<fb:req-choice url=http://www.facebook.com/socialseo label=’Go’ /> “>

<fb:multi-friend-selector actiontext=”Invite your friends to connect with SMSEO” rows=”3″ cols=”3″ showborder=”true” />

</fb:request-form>

This creates a very nice looking, and very effective, Facebook invite app where people can now come and invite all of their friends to join your Facebook page.

When building the apps, I named it “Join SMSEO!” so that throughout the sharing process, the message is consistently “so and so invited you to Join SMSEO!”.

Basically, whatever you put in the title of the app is what will show up all over the process, and including in the invite message your friends receive.

Let me know how the integration goes for you!

The new Facebook Fan Page iFrame tabs have been getting some pretty good reviews from developers so far. The only exception being those who aren’t able to code their own tabs.

The process for setting up a new iFrame tab for your Facebook did just get a bit easier with the new “Facebook Tab URL” field in the “Page Tabs” section of your application.

The “tab url” field used to be a place where you have to enter only the page portion of the URL being used for your iFrame tab.

Here’s what it used to look like:

Some people struggled with this because they weren’t completely sure what goes in that field. And by putting in the wrong information, you’d end up with an error.

Now the iFrame tab URL is a whole lot easier – it now simply has you enter the entire URL of your iFrame tab.

Here’s what it looks like now:

The new “Tab URL” should make it a whole lot easier for you to setup your Facebook iFrame tab because now you can simply enter the URL of the page where your tab code resides.

It seems like a small change, but it’s one that in my opinion makes it easier to create tabs for your Facebook page.

I’ve written previously on how to build iFrame tabs for Facebook Fan Pages.

And in that article I described how to remove the scroll bar issue that a lot of apps are plagued with.

I also wrote an article called 2 Ways To Remove Scroll Bar from Facebook Page iFrame Tab Apps.

Well, I’ve since learned that code works only part of the time.

And for developers who are trying to get things done, when you have something like a scroll bar issue, and it’s been 5 hours later and you still haven’t fixed it, it’s important to get help wherever you can.

So I found some new code that has, quite honestly, worked 100% of the time for in resolving the scroll bar issue with Facebook Fan Page iFrame tabs.

I’m going to give you just the framework (header and closer) tags of the code – you just need to include your content in between.

If nothing is wrong with your content code, then this should work everytime at removing your scroll bar issues on your iFrame tabs.

Here ya go, and leave comments to let me know how it works for you:

<html xmlns=”http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml” xmlns:fb=”http://www.facebook.com/2008/fbml”><head>

In that announcement, Facebook spelled out the timeline for closing the door on the FBML apps and stated on March 11th, 2011, you’ll no longer be able to create new FBML apps for your Facebook pages.

This is what Facebook had to say in regards to the FBML apps:

On March 11, 2011, you will no longer be able to create new FBML apps and Pages will no longer be able to add the Static FBML app. While all existing apps on Pages using FBML or the Static FBML appwill continue to work, we strongly recommend that these apps transition to iframes as soon as possible. Lastly, we want to be clear that our deprecation of FBML does not impact XFBML, such as the tags that support social plugins.

So even though tomorrow, you’ll no longer be able to create new FBML apps, your existing FBML apps are not in jeopardy of shutting down. As Facebook stated, Pages using FBML or the Static FBML app will continue to work.

Also via Facebook’s official Twitter profile today, Facebook let the world know that the new Facebook Fan Page upgrades are starting to roll out, and that over the next several weeks, all pages will be upgraded to the new platform.

I wrote an article highlighting what I see as the 5 best features of the Facebook Fan Page upgrade.

I’ve been asked several times from people about the possibility of running Google Analytics for the new iFrame tabs.

And so I’ve been searching for a way since last week to make this happen – to make Google Analytics run within a custom iFrame tab on a Facebook Fan Page.

The benefits would be great because you’d be able to see what kind of traffic your new app was getting.

However, my searching came to end yesterday when it occurred to me why Google Analytics, or GetClicky, or any other analytics tracking code for that, cannot run on an iFrame tab.

The reason is because iFrame tabs are iFrame’s.

Duh… really?

I realized yesterday that because these pages are an iFrame running within Facebook, the application that you build it not generating it’s own unique page views, only the page views from within Facebook.

So in the traditional form of pasting your Google Analytics code into an iFrame app, it’s not going work.

This doesn’t mean, however, that traffic analysis is not possible – because it is.

But the analytics integration has to come from within the code and frame of Facebook, not Google Analytics.

The bottom line – is it possible to analyze traffic to your iFrame apps?

Yes.

Will it happen by pasting Google Analytics, or any other analytics code, into your iFrame tab?

No.

Stay tuned as I continue down this road of generating analytics for iFrame tabs.

This is something that has been a bit of a delimma to me.

Adding Google Analytics to the iFrame tabs for Facebook Fan Pages should be something that can be done quite easily. I mean, javascript can be added to the iTabs and perfectly fine – look at how easy it is to embed YouTube videos in an iFrame.

But I’ve been experimenting the past couple of weeks with both Google Analytics and GetClicky (a real time analytics platform), and I have yet to get any analytics data from my tabs.

The iFrame tabs I’m building are standard web pages, as far as code is concerned.

I’m placing the analytics code above the closing body tag:

</body>

Yet I still get nothing as far as data regarding the traffic.

How about you?

Have you been able to install analytics into your iFrame tab and actually get data?

If so… please do share!

Otherwise, I’m going to continue working on this issue until I at least get a “yes” or “no” on whether it’s possible.

I’ll keep you posted.

If you haven’t upgraded your Facebook Fan Page yet, then you are running out of time!

On March 10th, whether you want your Facebook page updated or not, Facebook will start updating all pages to the new upgraded platform.

In my humble opinion, I couldn’t really imagine why you wouldn’t want to upgrade your Facebook page – lot’s of new, exciting, and very productive upgrades have been implemented.

Here are four main upgrades to be looking for with your new Facebook Fan Page

1) iFrame tabs for Facebook Fan Pages – this will be the element that replaces the current FBML app. In fact, on March 11th, FBML apps will be deprecated – meaning, you won’t be able to create any more. But with the new iFrame tabs, you can now customize your page tabs with full HTML elements, no longer under the grip of FBML.

2) Email notifications – this is another sweet upgrade and one that page admin’s have been clamoring about for quite some time. You can now receive email notifications whenever someone posts a comment to your wall updates, or adds their own update on your wll.

3) Showcase photos – this is following the upgrade given to Facebook profiles and allows page admins to now showcase specific photos directly at the top of their Facebook fan page.

4) News feed for your Facebook page – emphasizing updates that have the highest EdgeRank, or stories from your page that are getting the most interactions (i.e. shares, comments, likes, etc…)

5) “Like” posts as your page – this updates is interesting because you will now be able to post a comment, or “Like” an update as the page admin (or as the page itself). You’ll actually be able to toggle back and forth between the page and your profile as you like.

The upgraded Facebook page is something that you can take advantage of right now.

Or, wait until March 10th when Facebook starts updating all pages.

Not only in creating custom iFrame tabs, but also in creating Facebook applications as well.

WordPress URLs are very friendly for iFrame tabs because they always end in a forward slash. This makes the pages, according to Facebook’s definition, a directory upon which the application’s content can be extracted.

One great way to use WordPress to create your iFrame tabs for Facebook Fan Pages is to use a “custom template” within your WordPress blog.

Set the custom template to a width a 520px for Facebook page iFrame tabs, and 720px width for Facebook applications.

Learn more about creating custom templates here.

Have you found that using WordPress is an easy way to create your Facebook page iFrame tabs?

Can you provide some links to your apps you’ve created with WordPress?

Some updates, like iFrame tabs for pages, are monumental. Other updates, although substantial, have flown under the radar… up to now that is!

How to change your Facebook Fan Page type (or category)

Changing the type of your Facebook Fan Page (or your category) is now a very easy process for admins.

Of course, you must first be an admin of the Facebook Fan Page you want to change.

But assuming you’re an admin, here’s the step – by – step:

1) Click “edit info” (under new fan page layout – also implies you’ve upgraded to the new fan page version)

2) Click “Basic Information” – this is found in the tab links along the left hand side of the admin dashboard

3) After clicking “Basic Information”, you will now see at the top of the page the “Category” drop down menus. Simply select the appropriate categories for your Facebook Fan Page

4) Click “Save Changes” at the bottom of the page

That’s it – you’ve just changed the type (or category) of your Facebook Fan Page.

One problem in particular has been the issue of some admins (Facebook Page admins) getting a blank page after they switched back to their personal profiles from posting as their page.

The new Facebook Fan Page allows admins to switch from posting as their personal Facebook profile to posting as their Page.

This allows admins more flexibility to responding to users directly as the page itself.

But some admins report, after switching back to their profile, receiving nothing but a blank page.

As of this moment, Facebook hasn’t issued an update saying the problem has been resolved.

Have you noticed this problem while switching back to your personal profile after posting as a Facebook page?

Over the past week or so, it’s been exciting to help so many people with their iFrame for Tabs Facebook Fan Page issues.

After dozens of direct and indirect support projects with others, and working on my own iFrame tab projects, I’m seeing a pattern of code start to emerge.

A more adept programmer would have known this from day one, guess it just takes me a little bit longer to figure out since I’m not “quote – unquote” a programmer.

But now, I can literally build a new iFrame tab for a Facebook Fan Page in just a matter or minutes. Primarily because there are certain sections of the code, at least the code I use, that is always the same.

For example, the “header” and “footer” on each new app that I build using Notebook is exactly the same with the one exception of the height attribute.

And now I’d like to share with you the code that I’ve been using consistently for all of my apps – and like I said, the header and footer are the same throughout:

The header code for iFrame tab apps:

<html xmlns=”http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml” xmlns:fb=”http://www.facebook.com/2008/fbml”>

<head>

<script type=”text/javascript”>

window.fbAsyncInit = function() {

FB.Canvas.setSize({ width: 520, height: 1500 }); // Live in the past

}

// Do things that will sometimes call sizeChangeCallback()

function sizeChangeCallback() {

FB.Canvas.setSize({ width: 520, height: 1500 }); // Live in the past

}

</script>

</head>

I’ve highlighted in red the only part of the header code you should have to change for your own iFrame tab app.

You can simply copy and paste the code above into Notepad to start your own app. Just make sure, if you’re getting a scroll bar, you increase the “height” attribute.

The Content of the iFrame Tab app

The next section is the code that I’m using for the content section of this particular iFrame tab.

You’ll have to figure out the code for your own iFrame app – or you can email me your project concept at admin@socialmediaseo.net.

Here’s the code that makes up the content of the app:

<div> <!– float container –>

<div style=”clear:both;”></div>

</div>

<script src=”http://connect.facebook.net/en_US/all.js#xfbml=1″></script><fb:like href=”http://www.facebook.com/CornerstoneAthens” show_faces=”false” width=”500″ action=”recommend”></fb:like>

<br/><br/>

<b>Previously recorded services at Cornerstone Church of God</b>

<div style=”float: left; padding:5px 0px 0px 0px;”>

<embed src=”http://blip.tv/play/g_c0ApmgOQ%2Em4v” type=”application/x-shockwave-flash” width=”350″ height=”350″ allowscriptaccess=”always” allowfullscreen=”true”></embed>

<div style=”clear:both;”></div>

<div style=”float: left; padding:20px 0px 0px 0px;”>

<div id=”fb-root”></div><script src=”http://connect.facebook.net/en_US/all.js#appId=191773364177093&amp;xfbml=1″></script><fb:comments numposts=”10″ width=”520″ publish_feed=”true”></fb:comments>

</div>

Again, you can copy and paste the code above into your Notepad in order to have somewhat of a template to follow.

Just make sure you change out the specific code for the elements I’m using, otherwise you’ll my content on your Facebook page.

The footer code to close it out:

Definitely copy and paste this code to use at the very bottom of your page:

Since Facebook has launched the new iFrame tabs for Facebook Fan Pages, a whole new world of opportunities has opened up for customizing Facebook page tabs.

The benefits of being able to integrate pure html, javascript, flash, and iframe embed code makes the customization of a Facebook Fan Page nearly unlimited.

This past Sunday was the second week now that we’ve streamed our church services live directly from our Facebook Fan Page.

Here’s a link to our ‘Live services page’.

And here’s a screen shot:

I created this page of course using the new iFrame tabs capabilities.

Before the new update, a Facebook page integration like this nearly impossible.

I only wish I had taken a screen shot while we were streaming this Sunday – it would’ve added a much nicer presentation in the image above.

Starting with the tab name on the left – you can see that with the new iFrame tab apps for Facebook Fan Pages, it’s possible to add your own web icon to your custom tab.

I went with a small video camera icon, but you could add any image you’d like so long as it is at least 16×16 pixels.

Along the top of the live streaming page I placed a simple Facebook Fan Page box, but changed the button to “recommend”.

I’ve actually used this on all of the custom tabs we are building because we are want to take advantage of growing our Facebook Fan Page every chance we get.

Of course, directly in the middle is the live stream viewer. We are currently using Sermon Studio and Wirecast for our production.

To the right, using <div style=”float: right;”> tags, I added our live service times and a fully functional PayPal button that allows people to give online while watching the live broadcast.

Then along the bottom, you have the Facebook comments widget which I feel is critically important because people want to be able to engage in conversation while watching the live stream.

Live Streaming other events via Facebook Fan Pages

While this particular tab is built to stream our live church services, it is certainly possible to stream any live event directly on any Facebook Fan Page. Simply following the same format and structure, and live event can be broadcast from any Facebook Fan Page.

If you get a chance, come check out our services streaming on Sunday morning and let us know what you think in the comments below.

*** UPDATE TO THIS ARTICLE ***

I found new code that has resolved the scroll bar issue with Facebook page iFrame tabs 100% of the time for me:

Read my article here where I’ve shared the code

*** End of update ***

Another major problem people are telling me about with their iFrame tab application for Facebook Fan Pages is the scroll bar.

The scroll bar within the iFrame tab Facebook application occurs when one of two parameters are met:

1) If the elements of the Facebook application exceed the maximum width of 520px. And from what I’ve seen, if the width is too far out of line, the app will simply load in a new screen altogether.

2) If the elements of the Facebook application exceed the default height set by the iFrame, which I believe is somewhere around 500px tall.

How to fix the scroll bar in the Facebook iFrame tab apps:

There is only one way, or one piece of code, that I know of that resolve (or resizes) your Facebook application:

FB.Canvas.setSize

The fb.canvas.setsize element goes in the header of your application and tells the canvas what size to adjust to.

Here’s the two ways I’ve been able to successfully remove the scroll bar from applications:

1) Use auto height adjustment – this is where you set the code to adjust automatically to your canvas URL height, and the code you use is this:

<script type="text/javascript">

window.fbAsyncInit = function() {
 FB.Canvas.setSize();
}

// Do things that will sometimes call sizeChangeCallback()

function sizeChangeCallback() {
 FB.Canvas.setSize();
}

</script>

I’m using the auto resize above successfully on my “Videos” tab on my SMSEO Facebook page.

The beginning and ending <script> elements are key here and must be present for the elements to work.

If you visit the Facebook help page where they give you code, they don’t mention that these elements must reside within the <script> beginning and end elements – something I guess Facebook just assumes everyone knows, which is clearly not the case.

So the code above is the auto-adjust element that you’ll use, and should make your canvas adjust to whatever height required – which means the scroll bar should not be showing.

But what about when the scroll bar is still there?

I’ve seen times where the canvas size code above did not auto adjust the height and there was still a scroll bar.

So the fix I found when the auto resize didn’t work is by putting in height and width specifications.

Here’s the code to use to manually adjust the height and width of your iFrame tab Facebook application:

<script type=”text/javascript”>

window.fbAsyncInit = function() {

FB.Canvas.setSize({ width: 520, height: 2000 }); // Live in the past

}

// Do things that will sometimes call sizeChangeCallback()

function sizeChangeCallback() {

FB.Canvas.setSize({ width: 520, height: 2000 }); // Live in the past

}

</script>

<script type=”text/javascript”>
window.fbAsyncInit = function() { FB.Canvas.setSize({ width: 520, height: 2000 }); // Live in the past}
// Do things that will sometimes call sizeChangeCallback()
function sizeChangeCallback() { FB.Canvas.setSize({ width: 520, height: 2000 }); // Live in the past}
</script>

You can see that I’ve manually added the size of “width: 520, height: 2000”

This code is being used on the live stream app I built for our church’s Facebook Fan Page here.

With this app, for some reason the auto adjust canvas code did not work and I had to use the manual size code.

Points to remember:

1) From my experience, the canvas size code must always reside in the head element of your page, which means the code looks like this:

<head>

canvas resize code

</head>

2) The FB code must always reside within the <script> elements (and within the head element as stated above) – so the final outcome needs to look as such:

<head>

<script type=”text/javascript”>

canvas resize code

</script>

</head>

Other than that, if the auto resize code doesn’t work then try the manual resize code.

If you find there is still a scroll bar after using the manual resize code then you either have elements within your app that are wider than 520px, or you need to increase your height.

Keep tweaking until you get it resolved.

Let me know how it goes – or if you need any help – in the comments below!

Here it is – one of the first tutorials on the web that gives you a step by step on creating a custom tab on your Facebook Fan Page using the new iFrame’s for Tabs feature.

Facebook announced the new iFrame’s for Tabs feature late last week, along with the announcement that current FBML apps for Facebook Pages will be deprecated by March 11th, 2010. This means, after March 11th, FBML apps for Facebook Pages will no longer be accepted.

This also means that if you want to have a custom tab on your Facebook page, you’ll need to build it using the new iFrame’s for Tabs platform.

I’ve said before that I think this is a great new update because with iFrame’s for Tabs you can now fully integrate HTML, javascript, and iFrame’s into custom tabs. With FBML apps, you were limited to only the set of acceptable tags for FBML.

How to build a custom Facebook Fan Page using iFrame for Tabs:

1) You must be a verified Facebook apps developer

This isn’t as scary as it might sound, you just need to verify your profile in the developer’s community.

Click here to see how to become a verified Facebook apps developer – once you have completed these steps, come back here to continue on to #2.

2) Go to Facebook.com/Developers

Now that you are a verified Facebook apps developer, it’s time to dive into creating your first iFrame of Tabs Facebook apps.

After you click the Facebook developer’s link above, you’ll need to click the “Set Up New App” button:

3) Give your iFrame for Tabs app a name

The next screen you see is the first step in developing your app, and you simply need to give it a name > click “I Agree” (agreeing to Facebook’s terms of service) > and then click “Create App”

4) Security check

After you hit “Create App” you will see the security box – type in the word verification to proceed:

5) The “About” Tab

The first screen you come to after entering passing your security check is the “About” tab.

This is general information about iFrame for Tabs app like the “Name” of the app and “Description” of the app.

You can see I’ve named my app “Cornerstone Live” and gave it a description.

This is also where you can give your app a large and a small image:

Small image: the small image is what will appear in the navigation of your Facebook Fan Page – it’s good to add the small image because it will help make your Facebook Fan Page look a lot better.

The small image must be at least (16×16) pixels in size.

Large image: the large image is what is used when / if you ever submit your app to the Facebook app directory. I won’t get into that in this post.

Don’t put anything for “Privacy Policy URL” or “Terms of Service URL” – and I’m using my email address as the “Contact email”

6) Click “Facebook Integration”

After you’ve filled out the “Application Name”, “Description”, added images (optional), and added your “Contact Email” – now click on the “Facebook Integration” tab on the left.

So don’t click “Save Changes” – just click the “Facebook Integration” tab next.

If you do click “Save Changes”, you’ll be taken back to the app dashboard > just click “Edit Settings” (top right) to get back.

Again, you now need to click “Facebook Integration”

Step by Step in the “Facebook Integration” section:

A) Core Settings

Your core settings will be filled out automatically for you – nothing to do here

B) Canvas Page

The “Canvas Page” name is what is used for the base URL of your app on Facebook.

In my app, you can see I’ve used “ccoglive” as the Canvas Page – this means, if you visit “http://apps.facebook.com/ccoglive/” you will visit the Canvas Page of my app.

The name you put in that box will be what the app URL ends in.

Don’t get wrapped up in what you see when you visit the URL above… it’s not particularly relevant when you are building an app to add an iFrame tab to your Facebook Page.

which leads us to the next section, the “Canvas URL”.

When you visit the link above, the “Canvas URL” will load.

Again, for the purposes of generating an iFrame’s for Tabs for your Facebook Fan Page, what you see at the Canvas Page / Canvas URL is not relevant – at least in my example.

I’ve used “cornerstoneathens.cc” as the Canvas URL because it is the base URL of my actual URL that my iFrame’s for Tab app resides.

“Canvas Type” – make sure you click “iFrame”

“iFrame Size” – make sure you click Auto-resize

C) Page Tabs

Tab Name: The name you put here will be the name that shows as the link in your Facebook Fan Page.

You can see I’ve named my tab “Live” – and here’s what it looks like on my Facebook Fan Page:

Page Tab Type: you need to click “iFrame”

Tab URL: to create my iFrame tab, I simply used Notebook (text editor) to build the HTML code for my page (see the code for my page below).

After I finished with the coding of my page, I named my page “ccoglive.htm”

And then via FTP I uploaded that page to the base URL (which is also the “Canvas URL”).

Now hit “Save Changes”

Adding app to your Facebook Page:

Now you’ve built your app and you’ve saved it, we need to get it added to your Facebook Fan Page.

From the dashboard page of your new app (which you should see after you hit “Save Changes) > click on the link that says “Application Profile Page”.

After you click that link, you’ll be taken to a page that looks a lot like a Facebook Fan Page – except it’s your iFrame tabs app page.

Find the link on the left that says “Add to my page” and click that:

Once you click “Add to My Page” a new window will pop up that shows a list of all of your Facebook Fan Pages that you “admin”.

Find the page you want to add your app to as a custom tab, and then click “Add to Page”.

Now visit your Facebook Fan Page and you should see your new iFrame’s for Tabs custom tab!

Final Result:

Click here to see my iFrame tab page live

I’ve written previously about How To Get Email Notifications for your Facebook Fan Pages, but this was sort of a hacked work around that worked, but was bit cumbersome to stay up with.

Ironically, that post has been ranking between 1 and 3 in Google since mid-year 2010 for “facebook fan page email notifications“, and I’ve gotten a lot of feedback, insights, insults, etc… from people all over the world talking to me about the method I describe.

Luckily for you and I, there is a new “OFFICIAL” way to receive email notifications when someone comments on your Facebook Fan Page.

This does need to be setup in your Facebook account work properly, but I can testify to the effectiveness of the notifications because I’ve been getting emails of new comments pretty consistently since two days ago when I set it up.

Here’s how to setup your official email notifications for your Facebook Fan Pages

Let me make one quick note before the step – by – step… you’ll notice that you can also set up to receive email notifications for all of the pages you “admin” – which is a really great feature!

1) First you need to click “Account” in the upper right in corner of Facebook (you must be logged in)

2) Now you’ll see a drop down menu > go ahead and click “Account Settings”

3) Find the tab called “Notifications” and click that

4) The fourth section down is called “Pages” > you need to check the box called “Replies to your discussion board post” – this will allow you to receive email notifications for responses from people reacting to your comments

5) Next find the link at the bottom of the “Pages” section that says “Change email settings for individual Pages”

6) Finally, go through the list of Facebook Pages and check the box next to the Page you want to receive email notifications for. You can check them all, or hand pick the ones you want to actually show up in your inbox > now just click “Save” and you’re done.

Let me know if you have any questions in the comments below, or call 706-363-0335 (Robert).

Since yesterday, I’ve been writing about the new updates to the Facebook Fan Page platform.

Some of the biggest changes, in my opinion anyway, are the FBML deprecation and the iFrame tabs for Pages.

You can read more about the pending deprecation of the FBML app here.

I want to focus for moment on the iFrame tabs for Facebook Fan Pages for a moment, and tell you three things that you need to know about, and be strongly aware of, regarding this new feature.

3 things you must know about iFrame tabs for Facebook Fan Pages:

1) You must create a Facebook app

This may be one of the biggest shockers for Page admins – the fact that you no longer simply add an FMBL app to your page and then throw in your html (FBML approved HTML that is…) and hit save.

Oh no… that is not at all the case anymore.

To add a new tab to your Facebook Fan Page, you’ll have to actually create a Facebook app, and then add that app to your Facebook page – something I plan on writing a “how to” on shortly – so stay tuned.

For a brief overview here though, you’ll have to actually create a new Facebook app, create your HTML customization in a separate file, then upload that file to your server and point your Facebook app to file.

2) Tabs now accept full HTML customization

On a REALLY strong note however, it’s worth working your way through the process of adding new iFrame tabs to your Facebook Fan Page because your pages are now fully HTML, javascript, and iFrame capable.

This means you can now be as creative with your custom Facebook tabs as you’d like, limited only to the imagination and code skill of the developer.

3) Earn money by adding Google Adsense to your Facebook tab

Finally, as a way to potentially start earning money from your Facebook Fan Page there’s the fact that you can now add Google Adsense, or any other ad revenue source, to your new Facebook tab.

Check out my example here

Notice how the new tab easily displays Google Adsense code.

This is because, as I’ve mentioned already, the new iFrame for Pages update allows you to add any HTML and javascript to your tab.

On a final note, I’ve had quite a few people asking me about the new iFrame for Pages update, how to add take advantage of it, and what the impact will be on your current Facebook Fan Pages.

I plan on adding as much helpful information here at Social Media SEO as possible.

And I’m currently working on a “How To” for adding a new “iFrame’s for Pages” tab – fully customized – to your Facebook Fan Page.

Stay tuned…

Ok, so let’s start with the numbers. Facebook has 500 million users worldwide, and 200 million of them access Facebook via their mobile device(s). Did you hear that??? 200 million users (and growing fast everyday) are accessing Facebook via their mobile device!

Facebook Fan Pages

Next, let’s move to Facebook Fan Pages. If you update your Facebook Fan Page with every new article you post to your blog, those page updates will syndicate into the news streams of all of your fans.

So let’s say you have 250 fans on your Facebook Fan Page. Each time you post a link to your new blog post, you are in essence exposing that article to 250 fans.

Now let’s say that 5% of those fans either click “Like” on your update or actually comment on your update (again, the update is from your Facebook Fan Page and it has a link to your new blog post). That would about 12 people who interacted with your update that announced your new article.

Average number of friends per Facebook user

Ok… short digression – the average user on Facebook has 130 friends – remember that number.

So if 12 people (5% of your 250 fans) interacted with your fan page update that announced your new blog article (which has a link to your article), and each of those 12 people had the average of 130 friends, then your page update on your new blog article has been exposed to 1560 people on Facebook.

Remember at the beginning that I said 500 million users are on Facebook and 200 million access Facebook via their mobile phone? Well that means 40% of Facebook users are accessing their profiles on mobile phones… right?

So let’s take the 1560 people that your fan page update has now been syndicated to on Facebook because of your fans interacting with your Facebook Fan Page update (are you still with me here…?) – and 40% of 1560 is 624.

Article exposure via Facebook mobile

In this example, I’m proposing that your latest blog article has been exposed to 624 people who are accessing Facebook via their mobile device.

And that’s just the people who are mobile!

The number more than doubles if you are talking about people on Facebook via a normal computer. But this article is focusing on mobile phones… so I’ll keep the numbers “mobile”.

Thoughts?

If you have a Facebook Fan Page, more than likely you’ve been interested in finding ways to increase the number of fans you have. The more fans you have on your Facebook page, the more likely you’ll get more people interacting, “like’ing”, and sharing your content.

But how can you get more fans on your Facebook Fan Page if you’re just starting out, or you haven’t yet found a solution to increasing fans?

I’m going to share one simple strategy that has not only worked miraculous wonders for my Facebook Fan Page, but for countless other clients that I’ve the privilege of working with and watching their fan base grow.

Create A “Welcome” Landing Tab

Even though you can find hundreds of tips online about how to increase your fans on your Facebook Fan Page, the most effective way I’ve seen so far is to have a custom “Welcome” tab that all “non-fans” land on when visiting your Facebook page for the very first time.

I’m going to give you a link below on technical, step by step to making this happen. But for this article, my goal is to give you theory if you will.

Having a default “Welcome” tab on your Facebook Fan Page, one that only non-fans land on when first visiting your site, gives you the best opportunity to convert new visitors into fans.

After all, with a “Welcome” tab set for only “non-fans”, you know that only people who are not yet a fan of your page are going to see this custom tab first.

I’ve had the privelidge of managing a campaign where over 7000 fans flooded a Facebook Fan Page in less than 3 days. And I attribute this success not only with utilizing a large email list to invite a lot of people to become fans, but also with the default landing tab that encourage everyone to become a fan.

So here’s some links to help you better understand, and implement, a “Welcome” tab that only non-fans land on. Again, this is the single more effective way I’ve seen at converting new fans to a Facebook Fan Page:

I know that Facebook has been warning us for quite some time about this, but today I – and several of my clients – have finally seen our custom HTML boxes removed.

So you may, or maybe not yet, noticed that any custom HTML boxes on your Facebook Fan Page are gone.

This is a policy implemented by Facebook to get you, the user, to leverage more of the designed interface that Facebook provides (i.e., Favorites, etc…)

If you were like me, I used the HTML boxes to provide navigation to all Fan Pages that were related to that specific page.

So instead of using the HTML boxes now, a great alternative would be to use the Facebook Page Favorites app.

Simply look underneath your Fan Page logo and click the link called “Add To My Page’s Favorites” > then simply select what Fan Page you want to add that favorite page to.

So what do you think about Facebook’s new policy of removing custom HTML boxes from Fan Pages?

Facebook Fan Pages are a great way for businesses to generate leads. Regardless of your business type, or how you define a “lead” – whether it’s call ins, referrals, sales, etc… – Facebook Fan Pages have the ability to build a large pool of high quality leads.

Custom Landing Tabs for Facebook Fan Pages

One way Facebook Fan Pages can facilitate a business in building leads is through the use of the Custom Landing Tab feature.

This allows you to specify what tab NEW visitors to your fan page land on.

Notice my emphasis on NEW.

That’s because, unfortunately, you are only able to control the landing tab for visitors who are not yet fans (or who have not yet liked) your Facebook Fan Page.

For now anyway, anyone who is a current fan of your Facebook Page will by default land on your wall.

But don’t be discouraged!

In a way I like this feature because it forces me to be creative in finding new ways to drive NEW visitors to my Facebook Fan Page.

Again, don’t forget that your Facebook Fan Page is most valuable in its ability to generate new leads and connections.

So in that way, the current custom landing tab behavior should be enough to keep you motivated in driving new visitors (and in turn, new leads) to your Facebook Fan Page.

Thoughts?

Facebook has been on a rampage with the updating of their Facebook Fan Page functionality. Since yesterday, Facebook has launched a new “like” element, took the new “like” element down, and then brought it back to life earlier today.

The new “Like” functionality is designed, according to Facebook, to:

To improve your experience and promote consistency across the site, we’ve changed the language for Pages from “Fan” to “Like.” We believe this change offers you a more light-weight and standard way to connect with people, things and topics in which you are interested.

So Facebook believes you need a more light-weight and standard way to connect with people, things, and topics in which you are interested.

Facebook basically wants to make the Fan Page updates more integrated with the rest of the normal update streams of Facebook, making them less distinguished as they were when your Facebook Fan Page had “fans”.

The response to this new “Like” update to Facebook Fan Pages has been less then stellar – to say the very least. Here’s some samples of responses I’ve been getting from readers of my previous articles on the new Facebook Fan Page here and here:

====

Not being able to see the complete list of fans stinks. Also, I can’t seem to figure out how it’s making the distinction between “friends who like” and “people who like” because I have friends split between the two categories.

====

annoyed they made the switch it really is stupid. I thought it was innovative the way they made the fan pages in order increase revenue and I feel its been a success now it seems there trying new marketing tools inorder to confuse people into liking something they dont want to become a fan for as a filmmaker I want my films to have fans n not likes but w/e

====

Changing Become a fan to like okay what ever makes them happy , but disabling the see all function? thats not cool , Im running an advert campain and the old see all would list the fans in chronological order I could revert back to the sight and see who the new people are , this was handy and informative , know what I get to see 6 people FB decides to ramdomly show , what for ? this is silly its like half a job and very social networking like , effect this has on me I already dropped my advert bids to 0.01 .
Simply put if it ain’t broke don’t fix it……….

====

This is a horrible plan for adverisers who should be able to se the entire list of fans. why would someone advertise their page for more fans when they can’t access the list of thowr fans?

We are dropping our ads!

I wrote yesterday about the new changes Facebook made to their Facebook Fan Page layout by replacing the ‘Become A Fan’ button with a new ‘Like’ button.

The changes went far beyond just changing a button however. With the new ‘Like’ functionality, Facebook Pages were going to be become more integrated within the news stream of fans’ personal Facebook profiles.

This would have meant more exposure, more branding, and more marketing power for a Facebook Fan Page.

Facebook changed it back to ‘Become A Fan’

I think it was within an hour or so of posting my article on the new changes that I, along with a bunch of other people, noticed that the Facebook Fan Pages were back to normal with the ‘Become A Fan’ button – the ‘Like’ button was gone.

So now when you go to look at your Facebook Fan Page, everything is back to normal and there is literally no trace of the ‘Like’ functionality.

2 Theories on what happened:

1) Facebook is experimenting with a new Fan Page layout and design and the only way to truly know what they are working with was to physically launch it. This would allow them to see what it looked like, how it functioned, and how the new layout would appear live on the web.

2) Facebook wanted to launch the new concept and get feedback from users. My guess is, based on the feedback sent through my own Facebook Fan Page, the response was not a warm welcome by any means – basically, people didn’t like the new functionality of the ‘Like’ replacing the ‘Become A Fan’.

The main critique I read was that you could no longer see all of your fans, and that you could no longer tell what fans were new to your Facebook Fan Page.

However, I’m not so sure you were ever able to tell what fans were new because I never noticed the list of fans being chronological – did you?

What do you think?

So did you notice yesterday the new Facebook Fan Page layout?

If not, you can check it our here (I got some screen shots).

And what do / did you think of the new layout and functionality? Is it something you would prefer to the current ‘Become A Fan’ design?

I received a call yesterday from a reader who had some questions about his Facebook Fan Page. The question involved looking at some prominent brands and their Facebook Fan Pages, and reviewing some different styles, layouts, designs and strategies these brands were implementing with their Facebook Fan Pages.

As I visited each Facebook Fan Page – remember, these were all major brand names – I noticed the same thing over, and over again. When I, being someone new and who was not yet a “fan” of the Page, visited their Facebook Fan Page, I was typically taken to a tab other then the wall tab.

But what I noticed, and what was perplexing to me, was that none of these pages asked me, or encouraged me to become a fan!

Go ahead and check some of these out for yourself – as you visit each of these Fan Pages, you tell me whether or not you are encouraged, or even asked, to become a fan of their Facebook:

The Economist

Victoria Secret

Pepsi Max

Starbucks

Banana Republic

And the list could go on and on… but the point is the same. None of these major brands, when you first land on their Facebook Fan Page, ask you or encourage you to become a fan.

Now granted, these are major global brands and have their reputations to build their audience.

But what about the rest of you – the small business owner – who doesn’t have a global brand name?

Can you afford to not maximize every possible opportunity to increase your fans on your Facebook Fan Page?

The Most Important Part of your Facebook Fan Page

I say all of that to finally get to my point:

The single most important part of your Facebook Fan Page is encouraging new visitors to become a Fan!!!

This apparently isn’t obvious from the looks of the Facebook Pages I keep reviewing.

But doesn’t it make sense?

Why have new people visit your Facebook Fan Page and not be asked, or encouraged to become a fan?

I consider each new visitor to my Facebook Fan Page a welcomed guest, and someone who deserves at least an invitation to become a fan.

As a business, once somebody becomes a fan of your Facebook Page you now have a new lead and prospect with whom to communicate.

Now, each time you send out an update from your Facebook Fan Page, that new person is going to see you (your brand, message, business, etc…) and remember you!

Did you know that statistics show that a person needs to see a new brand or business at least 7 times online before they decide to do business with them?

This is huge! And it means you, as a business with an online presence, need to capitalize on every opportunity out there to increase your exposure to new customers.

A Facebook Fan Page is the best, most efficient way for you and your business to achieve this – yet, Page after Page that I visit never once asks me or invites me to become a Fan.

A perplexing, and costly mistake in my humble opinion…

I just received something the other that I’ve never seen before. And it was a Weekly Facebook Fan Page Update email from Facebook giving me a breakdown of the my weekly stats for my Facebook Fan Page. The email gave me stats such as “Fans this week”, “Wall Posts, Comments, and Likes this week”, and “Visits to your page this week”. All of the stats also included a comparison to the previous week.

My first question is – has anyone else been receiving these Weekly Facebook Fan Page Updates?

And my second question is – I’m admin for more than a dozen Fan Pages, but I only received the updates on a couple of the Pages. So why the discrepency?

Why wouldn’t I receive the updates on all of the Fan Pages that I admin and / or created.

Anyway, I plan on digging deeper into this to find out what exactly the Weekly Facebook Fan Page Updates are and I’ll let you know!

If you have some feedback on these weekly updates, or if you’ve been receiving them for your own Facebook Fan Pages, then let us know in the comments!

Mashable’s Network of Facebook Fan Pages

My favorite blog in the world, Mashable, has taken their Facebook Fan Page presence to a whole new level. They’ve created a Facebook Fan Page for each of their popular categories on their blog. And the Fan Page network seems to be growing quite nicely with already a hundred of so fans per page.

An idea I have for Mashable’s Fan Page navigation

The way Mashable has set up navigation to and from each of the Pages is by “favoriting” each of the other pages.

However, the problem is that only 6 of the 8 Fan Pages show in their “Favorite” section.

One idea to make it easy to promote each of the other 7 pages, and to make it easy for people to navigate to the other pages, is to create a custom navigation bar utilizing the Facebook FBML app.

An Example of a Facebook Fan Page Navigation Bar

Heres’ an example of what I’m talking about – check out the navigation bar I created for our church that has 10 Facebook Fan Pages.

See the navigation bar in action by visiting the main Facebook Fan Page here,

You will also notice when you are on a specific page within the network, the banner in the navigation bar is dark blue. This helps people know what page they are on at all times within the network.

Making A Website out of Facebook Fan Pages

I love what Mashable has done by creating multiple Facebook Fan Pages!

Creating a custom navigation bar for multiple Facebook Fan Pages is, in my opinion, leveraging the FBML app to create a sort of “website” environment directly within Facebook!

It’s like having a website, with website type navigation, but all of the pages consist of Facebook Fan Pages. And since it is actually within Facebook, you get all of the benefits of the viral exposure, sharing, and commenting that Facebook provides!
